Betta balunga is a small, shy paternal mouthbrooder from the forest streams and blackwater swamps of Borneo, first collected from a tiny tributary of the Balung River near Tawau in what is now the Malaysian state of Sabah. Males reach around 2 in standard length and carry a subtle iridescent sheen on the head that distinguishes them from females; the species ranges south into the Sebuku and Mahakam watersheds of East Kalimantan, Indonesia, occupying habitats that range from shallow, clear forest brooks to sluggish, peat-stained blackwater channels. Like all members of the akarensis group, it belongs to the labyrinth fishes, breathing atmospheric air through a suprabranchial organ — an adaptation that suits the warm, oxygen-depleted waters it calls home.

Taxonomy & naming

Betta balunga was described by Albert William Herre in 1940, based on specimens from a small brook tributary to the Balung River approximately 45 miles from Tawau, in what was then British North Borneo and is now the Tawau Division of Sabah, Malaysia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) records the valid name as Betta balunga Herre, 1940. The species is placed in the akarensis group of the genus Betta, a clade of paternal mouthbrooding bettas native to Borneo and the adjacent Sunda islands.

The akarensis group shares the mouthbrooding reproductive mode and a general body plan of modest size, subdued patterning, and forest-stream ecology. Within this group, Betta balunga is distinguished by meristic and coloration characters, including the degree of iridescent scaling on the head and the fin shape of adult males. The genus Betta belongs to the family Osphronemidae and the suborder Anabantoidei — the labyrinth fishes — whose defining anatomical feature is the suprabranchial organ, a folded, vascularised chamber that allows direct extraction of oxygen from air gulped at the surface.

Morphology

Adult males reach approximately 2 in standard length; females are somewhat smaller. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed in the manner typical of the akarensis group — a slender, streamlined fish suited to shallow, current-exposed forest streams. The head is relatively broad in males compared to females, and the unpaired fins are more extended. Males display more pronounced iridescent scaling on the head, giving a faint metallic sheen that varies with angle of light.

Overall coloration is cryptic — earthy browns, tans, and olive tones that blend with the leaf litter and root-tangled substrates the species inhabits — with variable darker patterning along the flanks. This is not a showy fish by the standards of the ornamental trade: its appeal lies in behaviour and subtlety rather than vivid pigment. The labyrinth organ, shared with all bettas, is housed in a chamber above the gills and is visible as a slight head broadening in cross-section; it is fully functional and necessary for the fish's survival.

Habitat

Betta balunga occupies two distinct microhabitat types across its Bornean range. In the Sebuku watershed of East Kalimantan, it has been collected from clear, fast-moving forest streams in very shallow water — often only 2–4 in deep — among marginal plant roots and accumulations of leaf litter at the stream margins. These are well-oxygenated, shaded microhabitats under closed-canopy lowland forest.

In the Mahakam watershed, also in East Kalimantan, the species is associated with sluggish blackwater streams: dark, peat-stained channels among submerged marginal vegetation and leaf litter, where the water is warm, soft, and acidic. Both habitat types are united by an absence of open-water conditions and by shallow, sheltered microhabitats rich in organic structure. Recorded water parameters span pH 5.0–7.0, hardness below 90 ppm (soft), and temperatures of 70–81 °F. The labyrinth organ makes the species tolerant of the low dissolved oxygen that characterises stagnant blackwater habitats, where surface access is critical for survival.

Feeding

In nature, Betta balunga feeds on small invertebrates taken at or near the surface and among the leaf litter: aquatic and terrestrial insects, zooplankton, and other small invertebrate prey that drift into its shallow, sheltered microhabitat. As a surface-oriented ambush feeder it exploits the rain of terrestrial insects that falls into forest streams and the invertebrate community that lives among leaf-pack accumulations.

In captivity the species accepts small live and frozen foods readily — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm, and other items of appropriate size. Like most wild bettas it has a small gape and is best fed correspondingly small prey items; larger foods are taken but may be refused. A varied diet with a strong live or frozen component maintains condition and supports breeding.

Mating

Betta balunga is a paternal mouthbrooder, and the mating sequence follows the pattern shared across the akarensis group. Courtship is initiated by the female rather than the male — a reversal of the arrangement seen in the bubble-nesting fighting-fish group. The female approaches and displays to the male, and the pair engage in the typical osphronemid embrace: the male wraps his body around the female, and eggs are released and fertilised in small batches during the clasp.

Following each embrace, the eggs are gathered into the male's mouth — the female ejects the clutch and the male catches the falling eggs before they can reach the substrate. This sequence is repeated in batches until spawning is complete, at which point the male retires to a sheltered location to begin incubation. He eats nothing during this period. The female takes no role in guarding eggs or fry.

Breeding

Once the male has collected the fertilised eggs, he holds them in his buccal cavity for approximately 14–21 days, gently churning the clutch with jaw movements to keep the eggs aerated and prevent fungusing. The male is fasted throughout incubation; disturbance, poor water quality, or stress can cause him to swallow or spit the brood prematurely. Fry are released fully formed and free-swimming, capable of feeding on small live foods immediately upon release.

In captivity, a separate breeding tank for a conditioning pair reduces disturbance of the brooding male. Many hobbyists remove the female after spawning is confirmed to prevent harassment of the male during his fast. Some breeders report losing entire broods, particularly from inexperienced males; patience and minimal disturbance during the incubation window are critical. Fry are small at release and require appropriately sized first foods such as freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii or microworms, graduating to small Daphnia and finely chopped invertebrates as they grow.

In the aquarium

Betta balunga is an infrequently kept species that appeals primarily to hobbyists with a specific interest in wild bettas and mouthbrooding osphronemids. It is best housed in a species tank or alongside small, non-aggressive fishes that occupy different water-column niches and will not compete for the male's territory during brooding. A tank of 23.5–31.5 in in length with dense marginal planting, leaf litter on the substrate, and low ambient light mimics the leaf-pack habitats the species uses in nature.

Water chemistry should reflect the species' soft, acidic range: pH 5.0–7.0, low hardness, and temperatures of 72–81 °F. Gentle, low-flow filtration is appropriate — the species is not adapted to strong current, and a sponge filter avoids the surface turbulence that can interfere with air-breathing. Surface access is non-negotiable for all labyrinth fishes; a tight-fitting lid also traps warm, humid air above the water surface, preventing cold-air shock to the suprabranchial organ. This is a shy, retiring fish that will not display or breed in a busy community environment; a quiet, well-planted setup rewards the keeper with natural behaviour that is rarely visible in heavily stocked tanks.

Conservation

Betta balunga is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 24 December 2018. The DD listing reflects a genuine lack of population data rather than an assumption of stability: the species is known from a geographically restricted area of Bornean lowland forest, a habitat under severe pressure from logging, oil palm conversion, and drainage of peat-swamp forest across Sabah and East Kalimantan. Betta species endemic to Borneo's lowland forest and peat-swamp systems are broadly considered vulnerable to habitat loss even when formal assessments cannot yet quantify population trends.

The species is not prominently traded in the ornamental-fish industry and does not appear to be subject to significant collection pressure. Its conservation status remains uncertain by default of information rather than confirmed security, and given the ongoing and well-documented decline of Bornean lowland forest, the precautionary approach is to treat it as a species of concern until better survey data are available.
