Taxonomy & naming
Betta bellica was described by the French ichthyologist Henri Émile Sauvage in 1884 from material collected in Perak, on the western side of Peninsular Malaysia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Betta bellica Sauvage, 1884. The species has at times appeared in older literature as a synonym of Betta fasciata, a closely related congener also native to the Sundaland peat-swamp zone, but a formal academic redescription clarified the distinctions between the two and re-established B. bellica as a valid, separate species.
B. bellica belongs to the bellica species group within Betta, a clade of large-bodied bubble-nesters distributed across Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. The group is distinguished from the fighting-fish group (which includes B. splendens) by a combination of size, lateral banding pattern, and narrow fin morphology. The bellica group shares with its relatives the defining labyrinth-fish attribute: a suprabranchial air-breathing organ that supplements gill respiration and allows the fish to exploit still, oxygen-depleted waters that most other fishes cannot tolerate.
Morphology
Betta bellica is the largest bubble-nesting betta, with adults regularly exceeding 3 in standard length and some individuals surpassing 3.5 in — well over three inches in total length. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, more slender and torpedo-shaped than the deep-bodied B. splendens, and this build is reflected in the common name "slender betta." Fins are pointed: the dorsal and anal fins taper to fine extensions in males, and the caudal fin carries a central point flanked by rounded lobes.
Coloration is highly variable with mood and condition. The base colour of the flanks is typically a warm olive to brownish green, overlaid by a series of iridescent lateral bands or rows of scales — teal, blue-green, or gold depending on light angle — that give a banded or scaled shimmering effect reminiscent of fish-scale mail. The gill covers carry similar iridescent scaling. Fins may show red, blue, or green tones along the margins. Females are noticeably smaller and less vividly coloured, with shorter, rounded fins and a pale ovipositor spot visible ventrally. A stressed or subdued fish can appear drab brown overall, while a displaying or contented male in optimal condition is strikingly iridescent.
Habitat
Betta bellica is native to slow-flowing streams, swamp forests, and peat-swamp margins across Peninsular Malaysia (type locality: Perak) and northeastern Sumatra in the Deli region. It is a Sundaland peat-swamp specialist, inhabiting some of the most chemically extreme freshwater environments on the planet. Peat-swamp water is soft to ultra-soft, heavily stained dark brown by humic and tannic acids leaching from decaying organic matter, and strongly acidic: the International Betta Congress records field measurements around pH 4.8 and conductivities as low as 33 µS/cm and 21.5 ppm TDS — conditions closer to dilute tea than to typical freshwater.
Temperature in lowland Sundaland swamps is warm year-round, generally 77–86 °F, and dissolved oxygen levels are low owing to microbial decomposition in the peat and the slow, sheltered water. Dense canopy, floating leaf litter, overhanging roots, and emergent vegetation characterise the microhabitat. B. bellica uses surface structures — fallen leaves, floating plants, the undersides of surface debris — as anchors and cover for bubble nests. As a labyrinth fish it can breathe atmospheric air, which is essential in these oxygen-depleted waters.
Feeding
Betta bellica is a carnivore-leaning opportunist in the wild. In its native peat-swamp habitats it preys on small invertebrates: aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, surface-fallen terrestrial insects, and zooplankton. The fish hunts at the surface and through the water column, using binocular forward vision to target moving prey at close range.
In captivity it readily accepts live and frozen foods — Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworm, and small aquatic invertebrates — and will take high-quality prepared foods designed for carnivorous anabantoids. A varied diet that includes live or frozen invertebrates maintains colour and breeding condition better than a prepared-food-only regimen. As a large betta it has a correspondingly substantial appetite; overfeeding and poor water quality from uneaten food are among the more common husbandry failures with the species.
Mating
Betta bellica is a bubble-nester. The male constructs a raft of mucus-bound air bubbles at the water surface, typically anchored beneath a broad floating leaf, a piece of cork bark, or other surface cover. Nest construction can take hours to days and may be repeatedly rebuilt or extended by the male without any direct female stimulus. The nest serves as both spawning site and oxygen-rich incubation chamber: the bubble canopy traps warm, humid air immediately above the eggs and maintains the microenvironment necessary for development.
Courtship is energetic. A receptive female approaches the nest and the pair engage in an extended embracing display — the male wrapping his body around the female in a nuptial clasp. Spawning proceeds in a series of these embraces, each releasing a small clutch of eggs that the male catches and carries to the nest. The female typically plays no further role after spawning; the male drives her away and assumes sole guardianship of the clutch. Given their size and the male's territorial aggression, the female should be removed promptly after spawning to prevent injury.
Breeding
Conditioning pairs on live and frozen foods accelerates breeding readiness. A dedicated breeding aquarium of at least 80 × 12 in base dimensions is appropriate for this large species, with a tight-fitting lid to maintain humid, warm air above the water surface — essential for the developing labyrinth organ of fry. Water should be very soft, acidic (pH 4.0–6.5), and warm (81–84 °F), with minimal current; an air-powered sponge filter is ideal.
After spawning, the male tends the bubble nest continuously, retrieving any eggs or newly hatched larvae that fall and pushing them back into the nest. Fry become free-swimming roughly 48–72 hours post-hatch at breeding temperature. At this point the male should be removed, as he may begin harassing or consuming the fry once they disperse. Initial foods for the free-swimming fry include infusoria, vinegar eels, or commercial liquid fry food; after five to seven days, newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii can be introduced. Growth is relatively slow, and juveniles remain sensitive to water-quality lapses for the first several weeks.
In the aquarium
Betta bellica is a rewarding but demanding species, suitable for experienced keepers willing to replicate its blackwater conditions. It requires soft, acidic water — pH 4.0–7.0 (ideally below 6.0), hardness in the range of 18–90 ppm — and temperatures of 77–86 °F. Peat filtration, dried Indian almond leaves, and reverse-osmosis water are the standard toolkit for achieving genuine blackwater chemistry. Tap water that is hard or alkaline is unsuitable without significant treatment.
A species-only tank or a carefully chosen blackwater community works best. Males are aggressive toward one another and toward other large bettas; a single male should be kept per aquarium unless the tank is large enough to establish separate territories. Females can be more tolerant of each other. Tankmates, if any, should be small, non-fin-nipping species that share the same extreme-water preferences — small rasboras of the Boraras or Trigonostigma lineages, small loricariids, or other swamp-specialist fishes from the same region. Surface access must never be blocked; the fish routinely breathes atmospheric air, and a sealed or poorly ventilated cover can be fatal.
Betta bellica is not a species for a standard community tank or beginner's aquarium. Its size, aggression, and exacting water chemistry requirements place it firmly in the specialist or advanced-hobbyist category. In the right setup it is a long-lived, behaviourally engaging fish whose iridescent flanks and bubble-nesting habits repay the attention.
Conservation
Betta bellica is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 17 January 2019. The species' broad distribution across Peninsular Malaysia and northeastern Sumatra, compared with more narrowly endemic Betta species, underpins this relatively benign status.
Nevertheless, B. bellica is a peat-swamp specialist, and the lowland peat swamps of Sundaland are among the most rapidly vanishing ecosystems in Southeast Asia. Drainage for oil palm and pulpwood plantations, peat fires, agricultural conversion, and urban expansion have destroyed a large fraction of the region's original swamp-forest cover over the past four decades, and the trend continues. While B. bellica is not currently considered at risk of extinction, its habitat association means that ongoing landscape-scale losses are likely to contract its range and reduce population density over time. Collection for the ornamental fish trade is a minor additional pressure but is not considered a primary threat at current levels.
