Taxonomy & naming
Betta burdigala was formally described by Maurice Kottelat and Peter K. L. Ng in 1994, in a paper reviewing small bettas from the Malay Archipelago. The type locality is Bangka Island, in the Indonesian province of Bangka-Belitung. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Betta burdigala Kottelat & Ng, 1994; because the species was described directly in Betta, no parenthetical authority is used.
The species belongs to the coccina group, a set of closely related small bettas characterised by deep red or crimson body coloration, relatively small adult size, and an association with blackwater or peat-swamp habitats across Sundaland. The coccina group includes Betta coccina, B. rutilans, B. livida, and several other narrow endemics, all sharing broadly similar morphology and ecology and distinguishable primarily by coloration, fin detail, and geography. Betta burdigala is distinguishable from its closest relatives by the specific hue of its body red — the epithet burdigala is the Latin name for Bordeaux, France, referencing the wine-red body colour of the living fish.
Morphology
Betta burdigala is a very small fish, reaching approximately 1–1.5 in standard length at maturity. The body form is typical of the coccina group: slender and laterally compressed, with relatively large unpaired fins in males and the characteristic labyrinth organ housed in a suprabranchial chamber above the gills that permits the fish to gulp atmospheric oxygen at the surface.
The overall coloration is a deep, saturated red to burgundy-red over the flanks, which intensifies in displaying or dominant males. The fins — dorsal, caudal, and anal — are similarly reddish, often edged or overlaid with blue-green iridescence, particularly in the tail. Females are generally smaller, less intensely coloured, and have more rounded fins, though they share the red-brown base palette. The species lacks the vivid blue or green iridescent scaling prominent in larger coccina-group relatives but compensates with a depth and richness of red that is distinctive in good light.
Habitat
Betta burdigala is endemic to Bangka Island and is known from flooded peat swamp forests and blackwater streams within those forests. The peat-swamp habitat is defined by organic-rich, highly acidic water: pH values around 4 have been recorded, and the water is deeply stained with dissolved humic acids and tannins leached from decaying vegetation, giving it the dark tea-brown colour characteristic of true blackwater. Temperatures are warm, in the range of approximately 72–75 °F, with low dissolved oxygen in the stagnant swamp zones — a condition the fish navigates via its labyrinth organ.
The canopy of intact peat swamp is dense, keeping light levels low at the water surface and creating a humid, sheltered microclimate. Betta burdigala occupies the shallow, still, or barely flowing water among leaf litter, submerged root masses, and tangled vegetation at the forest floor — microhabitats offering cover for both resting and bubble-nesting. This habitat is highly specialised and the fish is physiologically and behaviourally calibrated to it; it does not occur in open, harder, or more alkaline water.
Feeding
Like other members of the genus Betta, B. burdigala is a carnivore in the wild, subsisting on small invertebrates encountered in or near the water surface and among leaf litter. The natural diet consists principally of small insects — including winged insects falling or resting on the surface — as well as tiny aquatic invertebrates such as small crustaceans and worms found within the peat substrate and decaying leaf pack.
In aquarium care it accepts live and frozen foods readily, with a preference for small live prey. Drosophila fruit flies, small bloodworms, Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and Moina are all suitable. The species tends to be a deliberate, unhurried feeder rather than a surface dasher, and benefits from feeding in a low-flow environment where food items drift slowly and are easy to intercept. Dry or prepared foods may be accepted by acclimatised specimens but should not form the bulk of the diet.
Mating
Betta burdigala is a bubble-nester. The male constructs a nest of mucus-bound bubbles — saliva blown into a raft — typically anchored at the water surface beneath a floating leaf, a broad plant frond, or an overhanging piece of wood or peat. The nest provides a stable, humid micro-environment for eggs and developing larvae. Courtship involves the male displaying to the female with extended fins and intensified coloration, circling her and guiding her toward the nest site.
The female signals receptivity by displaying back and following the male's lead. Spawning takes place directly beneath the bubble nest: the pair embrace in the characteristic Betta nuptial clasp, the male curling his body around the female and stimulating egg release, with fertilisation occurring simultaneously. Eggs are pale and buoyant and float up into the nest or are collected by the male and blown into it. The female should be separated from the male after spawning is complete, as he will take sole charge of the brood and may become aggressive toward her.
Breeding
Following spawning, the male Betta burdigala guards the bubble nest attentively, collecting any eggs or newly hatched larvae that fall and returning them to the nest, repairing bubble coverage as needed, and driving away intruders including the female. The eggs hatch within one to three days at typical swamp temperatures, and the larvae hang vertically in the nest, absorbing the yolk sac, for a further two to four days before becoming free-swimming.
Once the fry are free-swimming, the male's guarding role diminishes and the fry disperse into the leaf litter and fine vegetation. First foods for the fry should be infusoria or similarly tiny live organisms — paramecia, rotifers, or vinegar eelworms — for the first week or so, followed by Artemia nauplii and micro-worms as the fish grow. The soft, acidic water chemistry of the breeding tank is important for egg development and fry survival; hardness and pH matching the natural blackwater conditions reduces developmental problems. Brood sizes are modest, consistent with the species' small adult size.
In the aquarium
Betta burdigala is a specialist species demanding careful attention to water chemistry. Keeping it in anything other than very soft, strongly acidic water — pH around 4.0–5.0, with negligible hardness — is likely to produce a stressed, short-lived fish. Peat filtration, leaf litter (particularly Indian almond leaves, which leach tannins and humic acids), and reverse-osmosis water are the standard tools for achieving these conditions. Temperature should sit in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, on the cooler end of the tropical range.
Tank size can be modest given the fish's tiny adult dimensions — a 45 × 12 in footprint is workable for a pair or a small group — but the tank must be tightly covered: bettas are accomplished jumpers, and the humid air layer directly above the water surface is important for the labyrinth organ to function without chilling. Filtration should be very gentle; this is a still-water species that will struggle with significant current. Decor of leaf litter, driftwood, floating plants, and dim lighting replicates the peat-swamp environment and encourages natural behaviour including nest-building. Tankmates, if any, should be similarly tiny and non-aggressive; keeping the species alone or in a species tank is the safest approach given its rarity and sensitivity.
Conservation
Betta burdigala is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in January 2019. The listing reflects a combination of extreme range restriction — the species is known only from Bangka Island — and severe, ongoing habitat loss. Peat swamp forests on Bangka have been converted to oil palm plantations and urban development at a rapid pace, and the remaining habitat patches are fragmented. The IUCN assessment notes a population in rapid decline with no indication of stabilisation.
The species has attracted the attention of an active international conservation project — the Betta burdigala Project — coordinated by Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Bangka-Belitung, the University of Leeds, and the National University of Singapore. The project combines field survey work, captive assurance breeding, and direct habitat protection through the purchase of land sanctuary plots within the remaining peat swamp. The involvement of academic institutions across three countries reflects both the scientific importance of the species and the urgency of its situation.
