Taxonomy & naming
Betta channoides was formally described by Maurice Kottelat and Peter K.L. Ng in 1994 on the basis of specimens collected from an unnamed blackwater stream entering the Mahakam River near Mujub, at approximately 0°01′S, 115°43′E in Kalimantan Timur (East Kalimantan), Indonesian Borneo. The species is placed in the albimarginata group of the subgenus Betta, a cluster of small mouthbrooding bettas endemic to Borneo that also includes B. albimarginata and B. cf. channoides forms. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Betta channoides Kottelat & Ng, 1994.
The specific epithet channoides means 'resembling Channa' — the snakehead fishes — in reference to the notably broad, somewhat flattened head profile that the species shares with the snakeheads, an apt parallel for a fish whose head is the instrument of its reproductive biology. The common name Snakehead Betta reflects the same morphological observation.
Morphology
Betta channoides is a miniature labyrinth fish, with published standard lengths typically in the range of 1.5 in SL (FishBase cites a maximum of 1 in SL for catalogue completeness, but field and aquarium records consistently place the adult at 1.5–2 in). The body is slender to moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with the head notably broad and depressed — the 'snakehead' profile that gives the species its name. Dorsal fin elements: 3 spines and 7–8 soft rays; anal fin 12 spines and 11–13 soft rays.
Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Breeding males flush from a warm chocolate-brown to vivid brick-red, with iridescent scales catching blue-green light along the flanks; the broad head and operculum take on the deepest colour. Females are considerably drabber — grey-brown to tan — though they may show a faint lateral stripe. Outside of breeding condition, males are less vivid but still warmer in tone than females, with a broader, more angular head profile that is the most reliable field distinction.
Habitat
In the wild, B. channoides inhabits small, shallow forest streams in the lower and middle Mahakam River basin of East Kalimantan, Borneo. The habitat is characterised by brownish, heavily tannin-stained water flowing slowly through dense riparian forest; the substrate is typically dark leaf litter and submerged root masses, with little mineral sediment. Flow is moderate; water depth at occupied sites tends to be shallow, often only a few tens of centimetres.
Water chemistry is soft and acidic, as expected for blackwater or near-blackwater peat-influenced systems: temperature 73–86 °F (73–86 °F), pH 4.0–6.5, and hardness very low (reported at 18–90 ppm total dissolved solids). Like all Betta, B. channoides is a labyrinth fish that breathes atmospheric air via its suprabranchial organ, an adaptation that makes it tolerant of the low dissolved-oxygen concentrations typical of stagnant or slow, leaf-laden forest streams — but which also means it requires unobstructed surface access at all times.
The total area of occupancy has been estimated at roughly a dozen square kilometres distributed across very few known localities, making this one of the more geographically restricted members of a range-limited genus.
Feeding
Betta channoides is a carnivore in nature, subsisting on small aquatic invertebrates and zooplankton encountered among leaf litter and root tangles. Items likely taken include small dipteran larvae, microcrustaceans, and other soft-bodied invertebrates of a size appropriate for a 1.5 in predator. In captivity the species readily accepts small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, microworm, and bloodworm are all documented as suitable — and many aquarists use these as the dietary backbone rather than dried foods.
Because the fish is small and its gape modest, food particle size matters more than for larger bettas. Prepared micropellets or crushed flake can supplement live and frozen items once the fish is settled, but a diet heavily weighted toward live or frozen invertebrates keeps colour and condition at their best.
Mating
Courtship in B. channoides follows the pattern typical of the albimarginata group: the male initiates by displaying intensely to the female, flushing to his most vivid colouration and spreading his fins. The pair circle and orient toward each other repeatedly, with the male angling his body and flaring his gill covers in a lateral threat-and-attraction display that can continue for some time before the female becomes receptive.
Spawning occurs in the classic labyrinth embrace: the male curls his body around the female and the pair press together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The embrace is repeated in multiple bouts. Immediately after each release, the male gathers the fertilised eggs from the water column or from where they have fallen and takes them into his buccal cavity. This sequence — embrace, spawn, collection — is repeated until the male's mouth is carrying the full clutch.
Breeding
Betta channoides is a paternal mouthbrooder: it is the male that incubates the fertilised eggs inside his mouth, eating nothing throughout the process. Incubation lasts approximately 10–21 days depending on water temperature, with warmer conditions shortening the period. Brood sizes are small; a clutch of around 10 eggs is considered a good result for this species. The fry are released fully formed and free-swimming, capable of accepting motile first foods — microworm and Artemia nauplii — almost immediately upon release.
In aquarium breeding, the male should not be disturbed during mouthbrooding. Many breeders move the holding male to a separate, quiet container for the duration of incubation to reduce stress and prevent harassment from tankmates. A temperature in the lower part of the species' range (around 75–79 °F / 75–79 °F) can extend the incubation period slightly and is believed by some hobbyists to improve fry survival. The small brood size means that losses in the first few days are significant, so first foods must be available immediately upon release.
In the aquarium
Betta channoides is best kept in a small, species-only or carefully chosen community setting that respects its need for soft, acidic, warm water and its somewhat retiring disposition. A tank of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a pair or a small group; larger volumes are beneficial mainly for stability of water chemistry. Dense planting, a deep leaf-litter substrate, and driftwood tangles that replicate the species' natural habitat both reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.
Water chemistry must be taken seriously: the species does poorly in hard or alkaline conditions. Target pH 4.5–6.5 and very low hardness, with temperature 75–82 °F (75–82 °F). Filtration should provide gentle biological and mechanical turnover without strong current; a sponge filter is ideal. The tank must have a tight-fitting lid — all Betta can jump, and cold, dry air above the water surface can damage the labyrinth organ, particularly in smaller fish.
Males can be aggressive toward each other, especially in confined spaces, so multiple males require adequate space and visual breaks. Tankmates, if any, should be small, non-nippy, and tolerant of blackwater conditions. The species is not recommended for beginners primarily because of its water-chemistry requirements and the care needed to raise the small broods successfully.
Conservation
Betta channoides is assessed as Endangered (EN) by the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(v)+2ab(v), assessed in January 2019. The listing reflects the species' extremely restricted range in the Mahakam basin of East Kalimantan — an area of occurrence below 5,0 mi² and an area of occupancy estimated at roughly a dozen square kilometres distributed across very few localities — combined with ongoing decline in the number of mature individuals.
The principal threats identified include collection for the international ornamental-fish trade and habitat degradation. Deforestation in Kalimantan has been severe and ongoing, with peat-swamp and riparian forest habitats reduced and fragmented; the blackwater streams this species depends on are among the most vulnerable microhabitats in the region. With so few known localities and such a small area of occupancy, a localised event — a pollution incident, a single large collecting raid, or road construction through a key drainage — could be catastrophic for a population segment.
The species is bred with some regularity in the aquarium hobby, and captive-bred stock is available through specialist betta societies and importers. Sourcing captive-bred rather than wild-caught individuals is the most direct conservation contribution an aquarist can make, reducing commercial collection pressure on an already narrow wild range.
