Taxonomy & naming
Betta chloropharynx was described by Maurice Kottelat and Peter K. L. Ng in 1994, based on specimens from Bangka Island (also spelled Banka), the large island lying off the south-eastern tip of Sumatra in what is now the Indonesian province of Kepulauan Bangka Belitung. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Betta chloropharynx Kottelat & Ng, 1994; the species remains in the genus where it was originally placed.
The species belongs to the waseri group, a cluster of large paternal mouthbrooders within the genus Betta that share a distinctive µ-shaped (or horseshoe-shaped) black mark on the throat. Other waseri-group members include Betta waseri, Betta renata, and several other Southeast Asian peat-swamp specialists. The group is placed within the family Osphronemidae, subfamily Macropodusinae, alongside the bubble-nesting fighting fishes and the other wild bettas.
Morphology
Betta chloropharynx is a large betta, reaching approximately 3–3.5 in (3–3.5 in) standard length, making it one of the bigger members of the genus. The body is elongate and moderately compressed, typical of the larger mouthbrooding bettas. Males are more colourful and more vividly marked than females, with extended, more elaborate fins and a distinctly broader head — a feature linked to the male's role in oral incubation.
The defining external character of the species and the waseri group is the µ-shaped (horseshoe-like) black mark on the throat, visible in both sexes but most pronounced in breeding males. Coloration in males includes iridescent lateral scaling over a dark ground colour; precise fin and body colour vary with mood, condition, and the blackwater light. The throat mark, combined with size exceeding 3 in, is sufficient to distinguish B. chloropharynx from most sympatric bettas. FishBase records the maximum published length as 2.5 in SL for some sources, but Seriously Fish records adults reaching 3–3.5 in SL, the latter more consistent with field accounts of waseri-group species.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Bangka Island, where it inhabits peat swamps and blackwater streams in rainforest. It has also been recorded from secondary forest pools with dense leaf-litter substrates. The type locality is described as a clear forest pool, but this habitat is now under severe anthropogenic pressure — Bangka's peat swamps have been extensively converted for palm oil and tin mining, and natural blackwater forest habitats have contracted dramatically.
The water chemistry of Bangka peat swamps is extreme: pH values of 3.0–4.0 are typical in intact habitat, with very low mineral content and water heavily stained with dissolved humic and tannic acids leached from the accumulating peat. Temperatures are tropical, 75–82 °F, and dissolved oxygen can be low in the still, shaded pools. Like all members of the family Osphronemidae, B. chloropharynx possesses a suprabranchial labyrinth organ that allows it to breathe atmospheric air directly, enabling survival in the oxygen-depleted water of intact peat swamps. The substrate is soft organic matter, with leaf litter, fallen branches, and submerged roots providing cover and ambush sites.
Feeding
In nature, Betta chloropharynx is a carnivore, feeding on small aquatic invertebrates, zooplankton, and insects. The calm, tannin-stained peat-swamp pools it inhabits support populations of small crustaceans, insect larvae, and other invertebrates among the leaf litter, and the species uses the cover of roots and debris to ambush or forage.
In captivity, the species readily accepts a variety of live and frozen meaty foods: Daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia), bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and small insects are all appropriate. As with other large bettas, live prey triggers strong feeding responses and is particularly useful for conditioning broodstock. Dry foods may be accepted by acclimatised specimens but should not form the basis of the diet.
Mating
Betta chloropharynx is a paternal mouthbrooder. Unlike the bubble-nesting bettas, waseri-group species produce no foam nest; instead, spawning occurs in the open water column or among cover, and the male immediately collects the fertilised eggs into his buccal cavity. The embrace and egg release follow the typical osphronemid pattern: the male wraps his body around the female in a nuptial embrace, eggs and sperm are released simultaneously, and the sinking eggs are quickly gathered into the male's mouth.
Males of the waseri group are notably large-headed relative to females, an adaptation that increases the volume of the buccal cavity and hence the number of eggs that can be incubated. Courtship involves the male displaying his throat mark and lateral coloration to the female; the µ-shaped throat mark is a waseri-group synapomorphy and likely functions as a species recognition signal during mate selection in the tannin-stained water where visual contrast is reduced.
Breeding
After spawning, the male takes the entire clutch of fertilised eggs into his mouth and holds them there throughout incubation. The incubation period is approximately 10 to 21 days (Seriously Fish), during which the male does not feed. Early fry develop within the buccal cavity, and the male releases them only when they are sufficiently developed to be free-swimming and largely self-sufficient. Fry released from the male's mouth are large enough to accept microworm and Artemia nauplii as first foods immediately.
In the aquarium, breeding B. chloropharynx requires close replication of the species' native conditions: very soft, acidic water (pH 3.5–6.0, hardness 0–90 ppm), temperatures around 75–82 °F, tannin-stained blackwater achieved with peat filtration or Indian almond leaves, and dense cover of leaf litter and driftwood. Because the male fasts during incubation, he should be well fed before spawning. The brooding male is typically removed to a species tank so that the fry can be raised safely without competition or predation risk.
In the aquarium
Betta chloropharynx is a specialised fish for experienced keepers committed to replicating its blackwater habitat. It demands very soft, acidic water — pH in the range of 3.5 to 6.0 and very low mineral content — and water quality must be stable; it does not tolerate the alkaline or hard tap water that suits many common aquarium fish. Peat filtration, reverse-osmosis water, and Indian almond (Terminalia catappa) leaves are standard tools for creating suitable blackwater conditions. Temperatures should be maintained at 75–82 °F with little fluctuation.
As a labyrinth fish, it must have unobstructed access to the water surface to breathe air; the tank should be covered to prevent the moist air layer above the water from becoming cold, as chilling of the labyrinth organ can be fatal. Tankmates, if any, should be similarly sized and non-aggressive; the species is best kept in a species-only or carefully considered biotope setup. Males are territorial toward one another and may injure or kill rivals. Feeding with live and frozen invertebrates will keep the fish in best condition and encourage breeding behaviour. Its Critically Endangered status means that keeping captive-bred stock is strongly preferable to wild-caught specimens, and any captive breeding programme contributes directly to the long-term security of the species.
Conservation
Betta chloropharynx is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, under criterion B2ab(iii), with the assessment completed on 7 January 2019. The Critically Endangered listing reflects both the species' extremely narrow endemic range — restricted to Bangka Island — and the severe ongoing loss and degradation of peat-swamp habitat across that range.
Bangka Island's peat swamps have been subjected to intense anthropogenic pressure, primarily from conversion to oil palm and acacia plantations and from tin mining, one of Bangka's dominant industries for centuries. Peat-swamp drainage and burning for agriculture has destroyed vast areas of the lowland forest habitat on which B. chloropharynx depends. The species has no known refuge population outside Bangka, and the remaining intact peat-swamp habitat is fragmented and continues to decline. Collection for the ornamental trade adds additional pressure to already stressed populations. Given the pace of habitat loss, the long-term survival of this species in the wild depends on effective protection of the remaining intact peat-swamp fragments on Bangka and adjacent areas.
