Taxonomy & naming
Betta coccina was described by Jörg Vierke in 1979, with a type locality in Jambi Province, central Sumatra, Indonesia. The specific epithet is Latin for scarlet or blood-red, a direct reference to the animal's vivid body colouration. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Betta coccina Vierke, 1979; the authority is unparenthesised because the species was described in Betta, where it remains.
The species belongs to the coccina species group — a cluster of small, secretive bubble-nesters with overlapping ranges across Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. Recent phylogenetic work on the complex, including a 2025 study by Ding and colleagues in ZooKeys, has demonstrated that the coccina complex is more diverse than historically recognised, with geographically isolated populations representing distinct lineages. Two new species were described in that work from Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. The relationships within the group are an active area of research, and specimens collected away from the Jambi type locality should be treated with caution regarding their assignment to B. coccina sensu stricto.
Morphology
Betta coccina is a small labyrinth fish, reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length and around 2 in total length in both sexes — modest even by wild-betta standards. The body is slender and slightly laterally compressed, with the elongated, slightly pointed fins typical of the coccina group.
Colouration is the species' defining feature. Males are dark brown to deep wine-red across the flanks, with the body and unpaired fins (dorsal, anal, and caudal) suffused in the same rich red; the paired pelvic fins share that red with clean white or pale tips edged in black. The most striking feature is a large iridescent lateral blotch — metallic blue-green in good light — positioned roughly mid-body. The eyes are a vivid blue. Females are duller overall, lacking the intensity of the male's red, and tend to show a horizontal stripe or mask-pattern across the head and flanks that is absent or masked in males. Colour in both sexes depends heavily on condition, mood, and age; the iridescent blotch in males can fade noticeably with advancing age.
Habitat
Betta coccina inhabits peat-swamp forest streams and pools across Jambi and Riau provinces of central Sumatra, and was historically recorded in the state of Johor on the southern Malay Peninsula — a population now considered extinct in Malaysia. These habitats are defined by extraordinarily acidic, ultra-soft blackwater: pH values of 4.0–6.0 are typical, with reports of conditions dipping as low as 3.0–4.0, and hardness approaching zero (dH 0–4, kH 0). The water is stained deep amber-brown by humic and tannic compounds leaching from decomposing leaf litter and peat, and dissolved oxygen is low. Temperatures in these shaded forest habitats range from roughly 72–86 °F.
The species is adapted to extreme seasonality. The swamps dry partially or completely during the dry season, and fish may survive in moist leaf litter for periods when standing water is absent — a strategy shared with other peat-swamp anabantoids. As a labyrinth fish, B. coccina breathes atmospheric air via its suprabranchial organ, which allows it to persist in the oxygen-depleted water of swamp pools where other fishes cannot. Its dependence on intact peat-swamp forest — a habitat shrinking rapidly across Sundaland — gives it an inherently limited and increasingly fragmented range.
Feeding
In the wild, Betta coccina feeds primarily on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. Prey items include mosquito larvae and other aquatic insect larvae, small surface-fallen insects, and microcrustaceans encountered in the leaf-litter zone. As a small, secretive ambush predator rather than an active open-water hunter, it likely forages slowly among leaf litter and vegetation, taking prey as opportunities arise.
In captivity it accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods readily — Artemia nauplii and adults, Daphnia, bloodworm, Tubifex, and mosquito larvae are all reported. Like most wild bettas it strongly prefers moving prey, and hobbyists note that live or freshly thawed frozen foods produce better results than dry prepared foods alone. Overfeeding, particularly with fatty foods, should be avoided; small, frequent meals suit the species better than large infrequent ones.
Mating
Betta coccina is a bubble-nesting species in which the male initiates and controls the reproductive environment. Pair formation is notably slow: fish housed together may take weeks or even months of gradual acclimation before committing to a spawn, and forcing pairing prematurely often results in aggression rather than courtship. Males are territorial and not entirely peaceful even outside spawning — several males can coexist in a sufficiently large space after initial dominance chasing, but close confinement invites conflict.
Courtship involves mutual displays of intensified colour, fin-spreading, and pursuit. The male constructs a small bubble nest — a raft of mucus-bound air bubbles, typically beneath a broad floating leaf, an overhang, or the water surface in a sheltered corner — which he tends and repairs throughout courtship. Display intensity increases as a female becomes receptive, and spawning is preceded by a series of approaches and retreats that may span several sessions. The entire pair-bonding and pre-spawning phase is one of the longer social processes in small anabantoids, and patience is considered essential by experienced keepers.
Breeding
Spawning occurs in the classic anabantoid embrace, with the male wrapping around the female as she releases eggs; he then collects the sinking eggs and deposits them into the bubble nest. Clutches are small — typically 20–50 eggs per full spawning event, often released in portions of 1–3 at a time. Eggs hatch within approximately 24–48 hours in some accounts, and 36 hours in others, depending on temperature.
The male guards the bubble nest during incubation, retrieving fallen eggs and repairing the nest structure. Fry become free-swimming roughly 2–4 days after hatching, at which point they require very small first foods — infusoria, rotifers, and freshly hatched Artemia nauplii. First-feeding fry are tiny and easily missed. The male typically loses interest in the nest after the fry become free-swimming and does not usually prey on them, though separating adults from fry once they are swimming freely is prudent. Growth is slow: fry may reach only about 1 in in their first five months. Older fry in a batch can exhibit cannibalism toward younger siblings, so size-grading a growing cohort improves survival rates.
In the aquarium
Betta coccina rewards patient, detail-oriented keepers willing to replicate the extreme chemistry of its native peat swamps. Soft, acidic water is non-negotiable for long-term success and breeding: pH in the range of 4.0–6.0, hardness near zero (reverse-osmosis or rainwater with peat filtration or Indian almond leaf tannins), and temperatures of 75–82 °F suit the species well. Hard or alkaline water stresses the fish over time and inhibits spawning.
The tank should be heavily planted and furnished with broad-leaved floating plants or Indian almond leaves to provide potential nest sites, with low flow (gentle sponge filtration at most) and subdued lighting — conditions that mimic the shaded, still forest pools the fish inhabits. At 1.5 in in length it is suited to a small, well-managed aquarium rather than a community tank; its small size and specialised water requirements make it a poor candidate for generalised community setups. Compatible tankmates, if any, should share its blackwater chemistry requirements and not be large enough to harass or outcompete it. Many keepers maintain it as a species-only setup or a single pair, enjoying the slow courtship and bubble-nesting behaviour as a centrepiece. It is not a beginner's fish, but for those equipped to meet its needs, it is among the most rewarding of the small anabantoids.
Conservation
Betta coccina has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of this writing and carries a status of Not Evaluated. Nonetheless, its conservation outlook is worrying. The species is known to have been extirpated from the Johor population in Malaysia — it is considered extinct in that country — and the remaining range in Jambi and Riau on Sumatra is under sustained pressure from deforestation, peat drainage, agricultural conversion (particularly palm oil expansion), and peat fires. Peat-swamp forest is among the most rapidly disappearing habitats in Southeast Asia, and the ultra-acidic blackwater pools that B. coccina requires are found only within intact or near-intact swamp forest.
The species has been exported in some numbers for the aquarium trade and is maintained by specialist hobbyists and betta-keeping associations, including breeding-loan programmes run through groups such as the International Betta Congress. Wild collection adds additional pressure on a naturally fragmented population. Formal IUCN evaluation would likely classify the species as Vulnerable or higher given the combination of restricted range, habitat specificity, and documented extirpation. Captive breeding by dedicated keepers provides a meaningful buffer, but not a substitute for protecting the peat-swamp habitats the species requires in the wild.
