Betta dennisyongi is a small paternal mouthbrooder from the lowland hillstreams and peat swamps of Aceh province, northwestern Sumatra, confined to a narrow strip of coastal terrain between Meulaboh and Singkil. Described by Tan in 2013 as a new species within the rubra group, it was previously conflated with its close relative Betta rubra until a suite of consistent morphological differences — stripe pattern, fin-ray counts, scale counts, and a smaller maximum size of around 1.5 in standard length — established it as a distinct species. The IUCN assesses it as Vulnerable, with habitat loss from peat-swamp conversion and collection pressure for the aquarium trade both working against an already restricted wild population.

Taxonomy & naming

Betta dennisyongi was described by Tan Heok Hui in 2013 in a paper published in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology (vol. 61, no. 1, pp. 323–330) that simultaneously revised the identity of Betta rubra and delimited the rubra group. The type locality is the Alue Rayeuk stream at Lamie in Aceh province, western Sumatra, Indonesia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name Betta dennisyongi Tan, 2013.

The rubra group, as redefined by Tan (2013), unites Betta rubra and B. dennisyongi as the two members sharing a set of stripe and scale characters that separate them from other Betta lineages. Betta dennisyongi differs from B. rubra by a continuous black postorbital stripe that extends to the opercle edge (interrupted or absent in B. rubra), a broader suborbital stripe spanning four to five scale rows (vs. two to three in B. rubra), fewer anal-fin rays (mode 25 vs. 27), more subdorsal scales (6–7 vs. 5–5½), more lateral scales (mode 31 vs. 30), more vertebrae (mode 30 vs. 29), and a smaller maximum size (35.4 vs. 1.5 in SL). The species epithet honours Dennis Yong Ghong Chong, a Malaysian naturalist.

Morphology

Betta dennisyongi is a small betta reaching a maximum of approximately 1.5 in standard length, making it notably smaller than its sibling species B. rubra. The body form is the streamlined, moderately compressed shape typical of hillstream Betta species: a pointed snout, large upturned mouth suited to surface prey, and a rounded caudal fin.

Colouration centres on the rubra group's characteristic stripe pattern. A continuous black postorbital stripe runs from behind the eye to the rear edge of the opercle — broader and unbroken compared to B. rubra — and a conspicuous suborbital stripe descends across the cheek across four to five scale rows. The body carries iridescent scales that can show green or blue reflections depending on lighting. Males are more vividly coloured with more elongated fins; females are plainer and typically shorter-finned, a reliable basis for sex determination in a well-lit display.

Habitat

In the wild, Betta dennisyongi occupies lowland hillstreams and acidic swamps along the western coast of Aceh province, Sumatra, between the towns of Meulaboh and Singkil — a coastal strip estimated at a few thousand square kilometres at most. Type-series fish were collected from brown, soft, acid water over mud and clay substrate at pH around 6.0, while one stream site yielded clearer water at a near-neutral pH of 7.0 over sandy substrate; both conditions fall within the documented chemistry range of pH 5.0–7.0. Water temperature at collection sites ranged from 72–81 °F (72–81 °F), hardness 18–90 ppm.

Like all bettas, B. dennisyongi is a labyrinth fish with a suprabranchial organ that allows it to breathe atmospheric air. This adaptation allows it to persist in the warm, often oxygen-depleted waters of peat swamps and sluggish hillstreams where dissolved oxygen can be very low. The species occupies secondary-forest streams as well as areas bordering farmland, suggesting some tolerance of disturbed habitat, though peat-swamp drainage and conversion remain the primary landscape-scale threat.

Feeding

Betta dennisyongi is a carnivore in nature, taking insects and small invertebrates from the water surface and the water column. Its upturned mouth reflects a predisposition to surface feeding, and like other rubra-group bettas it likely targets small dipteran larvae, microcrustaceans, and fallen terrestrial insects.

In captivity, Seriously Fish reports that adults accept small live and frozen foods readily: Daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia), bloodworm, newly hatched crickets, and Drosophila fruit flies. A diet biased toward live and frozen invertebrate prey maintains condition and colour and better reflects the natural feeding strategy. Dry foods are accepted by some individuals but are best used as a supplement rather than a staple for long-term health.

Mating

Betta dennisyongi is a paternal mouthbrooder. Courtship follows the pattern characteristic of mouthbrooding bettas: the male displays to the female with flared operculae and intensified colour, and after prolonged circling the pair enter a spawning embrace. During the embrace the female releases eggs that are caught on her anal fin or the male's body before she passes them to the male.

The male then collects all fertilised eggs into his buccal cavity, beginning the incubation phase. Unlike bubble-nesting bettas, which construct foam nests at the surface, mouthbrooding bettas hold the entire clutch in the mouth and typically cease feeding for the duration. The male's throat visibly distends during incubation, a reliable sign that a spawn has occurred.

Breeding

After collecting the fertilised eggs, the male incubates the brood buccally for approximately 10 to 17 days, during which time he neither eats nor releases the eggs. At the end of incubation he releases free-swimming fry that are immediately capable of feeding. According to Seriously Fish, the male can be removed from the breeding tank at this point or left with the fry; both approaches are reported workable, though removal reduces the risk of the male reabsorbing the brood under stress.

Fry are robust feeders from first release and accept microworm and Artemia nauplii immediately — a significant practical advantage compared to bubble-nester fry, which often require infusoria for the first days. Spawning production in mouthbrooding bettas tends to be lower per spawn than in egg-scattering or bubble-nesting species, but the buccal incubation provides substantial protection from predation and environmental fluctuation.

In the aquarium

Betta dennisyongi is a shy, small species best maintained as a single pair or a small group in a dedicated, well-planted aquarium. The setup should replicate the soft, warm, acidic to near-neutral water of its Aceh swamp and hillstream habitat: temperature 72–81 °F (72–81 °F), pH 5.0–7.0, soft to slightly hard water. Gentle filtration — a sponge filter is ideal — maintains water quality without generating the surface turbulence that distresses labyrinth fishes or disrupts a mouthbrooding male. Surface access must be ensured at all times so the fish can breathe atmospheric air.

Dense planting with fine-leaved or floating plants, leaf litter, and driftwood creates the shaded, tannin-stained conditions the species prefers and reduces stress-driven fin damage. As a small, retiring species it should not be kept with active or aggressive tankmates; a species tank or a community of similarly sized, non-aggressive small fish is most appropriate. It is suited to an experienced keeper who can provide precise water chemistry and a diet of live and frozen invertebrate foods, and who understands the mouthbrooding reproductive mode.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Betta dennisyongi as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion B1ab(iii), assessed 26 December 2018. The listing reflects the species' restricted range — a coastal strip of Aceh province between Meulaboh and Singkil — and ongoing habitat decline driven by peat-swamp conversion, water pollution, and environmental change. An Indonesian endemic with a small extent of occurrence and continuing habitat loss, it meets the threshold for Vulnerable and would qualify for a higher category if the range proves smaller than current estimates.

Overexploitation for the international aquarium trade is cited alongside habitat loss as a threat. A study confirming population decline in both B. dennisyongi and the co-occurring B. rubra documents reduced numbers attributable to combined exploitation and environmental pressure. Conservation of the Aceh lowland peat-swamp mosaic — already under intensive agricultural and drainage pressure across Sumatra — is the key to the species' long-term survival in the wild.
