Taxonomy & naming
Betta enisae was described by Maurice Kottelat in 1995. The type locality lies within the River Santik watershed, a tributary system of the Kapuas River drainage in West Kalimantan province, Indonesian Borneo. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) treats the valid name as Betta enisae Kottelat, 1995, with no parentheses, as Kottelat placed the species in Betta at the time of description and the name has not been moved.
The species belongs to the pugnax group of the genus Betta — a complex of non-bubble-nesting, mouthbrooding bettas scattered across the rainforest streams of mainland Southeast Asia and the Sunda Islands. Within that group, B. enisae can be distinguished from its closest relatives by the presence of transverse bars on the caudal fin, a lateral scale count of 26–28, and a predorsal length that runs 67.3–70.3 % of standard length. It is superficially similar to B. pugnax but the caudal-fin patterning and meristic combination separate them. Populations collected from different localities across the Kapuas basin show some variation, and the species may represent a complex rather than a uniform entity.
The specific epithet enisae has not been publicly glossed in the original description notes available; it may honour an individual or locality connected with the type series.
Morphology
Betta enisae is a slender, moderately elongated labyrinth fish reaching approximately 2–2.5 in standard length, with FishBase recording a maximum of 2.5 in SL. Like other members of the pugnax group it lacks the extravagant finnage of domesticated B. splendens; the dorsal and anal fins are relatively short and rounded, and the caudal fin is rounded to slightly pointed. The body is laterally compressed and streamlined, suited to navigating narrow channels through roots and leaf litter rather than open water.
Colouration in life tends toward warm brown to olive on the dorsum, with iridescent blue-green or teal scaling on the flanks that shifts with angle of light. The operculum and cheek region may display green or blue iridescence. Horizontal striping is variably expressed. The key diagnostic feature visible in life is the presence of transverse (vertical) bars on the caudal fin, which distinguishes it from several close relatives. Sexual dimorphism is subtle: males typically carry slightly more vivid iridescent colouration on the flanks and operculum, and the buccal region of a brooding male visibly distends to accommodate the egg or fry clutch.
Habitat
Betta enisae inhabits cool, fast-flowing forest streams and blackwater peat-swamp drainages within the Kapuas River basin of West Kalimantan, Borneo. The environment is heavily canopied, with dense riparian forest limiting direct sunlight to scattered dapples. The water is stained dark amber to near-black by humic and fulvic acids leaching from decomposing leaf litter and peat; visibility is low and tannin concentration is high. Leaf-litter accumulations on the streambed serve as both substrate and microhabitat — the fish hug the bottom and root margins where invertebrates concentrate.
Water chemistry reflects the peat-swamp origin: temperature runs cool relative to many lowland tropical fish, at roughly 70–75 °F (70–75 °F), pH typically 5.5–7.0, and hardness very low (0–90 ppm total dissolved solids). These are soft, oxygen-limited, acidic conditions in which Betta's labyrinth organ — a folded suprabranchial structure that allows the fish to breathe atmospheric air — is not merely useful but essential. The labyrinth permits survival in water that would be lethally hypoxic for most fishes, and surface access for air-breathing is a non-negotiable habitat requirement. Betta enisae is therefore found in still to gently flowing sections where it can reach the surface without fighting a strong current.
Feeding
In its natural habitat, Betta enisae feeds on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, small worms, and whatever terrestrial invertebrates fall or wander into the water. The forest-stream environment is invertebrate-rich in the leaf litter and root zone, and the fish's size and hunting style are calibrated for prey in the 0.5 in range.
In captivity the species readily accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods: Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp), bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and similar offerings are accepted with enthusiasm and represent the most nutritious options. High-quality small pellets or micro-granules are usually taken once the fish has settled. A diet skewed toward live or frozen protein produces the best colour, condition, and breeding readiness. The cool, blackwater habitat origin means the species has a comparatively modest metabolic rate; overfeeding in a small, low-flow tank quickly degrades water quality.
Mating
Betta enisae is a paternal mouthbrooder, and the entire courtship sequence is oriented toward the transfer of eggs to the male's buccal cavity. Courtship involves the male displaying to the female with flared opercula and spread fins, assessing her readiness. When both fish are receptive, they engage in a spawning embrace in which the male wraps his body around the female; fertilisation is external, with eggs and milt released simultaneously.
After each embrace the pair gather the fertilised eggs from the water column. In paternal mouthbrooding bettas it is the male that collects the eggs — he takes them into his mouth before the pair re-engage. Multiple embraces follow until the female is spent, at which point the male retreats with a full buccal load and the female is best removed or allowed sufficient space so she is not harassed. The male will not eat during incubation, and any disturbance during this period risks premature release of the eggs or fry.
Breeding
After collecting the eggs the male incubates them in his buccal cavity for approximately 9–18 days, with 12–14 days being the most commonly reported duration under typical aquarium conditions; cooler water lengthens the incubation period and warmer water shortens it. Throughout this time the male eats nothing. Yolk-sac absorption, hatching, and early fry development all occur inside the buccal pouch; the male periodically rolls and repositions the mass.
When the fry are sufficiently developed, the male releases them and they are immediately free-swimming. At this point the male may resume feeding. The released fry, though small, are relatively well-developed compared with the newly hatched larvae of egg-scattering species. First foods should be very small: infusoria, vinegar eels, or commercial microplankton preparations for the first few days, followed quickly by newly hatched Artemia nauplii as the fry grow. The species can be maintained and bred in pairs or in small groups; pairs are less combative, but groups allow natural social dynamics to develop.
In the aquarium
Betta enisae is suited to a species tank or a carefully chosen community of similarly sized, non-aggressive small fishes from comparable blackwater environments. A tank of 10–15 US gal with a tight-fitting lid (labyrinth fishes must access warm, humid air at the surface — a cold draught can damage the labyrinth organ), low to moderate flow, and a dense leaf-litter layer on a dark substrate replicates the wild habitat and reduces stress. Dried Indian almond leaves, oak leaves, or alder cones release tannins that acidify the water, stain it amber, and provide anti-microbial compounds that align with the species' wild chemistry.
Target water conditions: 70–75 °F (70–75 °F), pH 5.5–7.0, very soft to moderately soft water (under 90 ppm TDS). These are cooler than many tropical species prefer, and the temperature ceiling in particular must be respected — sustained heat above 79 °F stresses fish adapted to shaded forest streams. Gentle sponge filtration keeps flow low and preserves the fine particulate organic matter the fish navigate naturally. Aquatic plants tolerant of acidic, tannin-rich water (Cryptocoryne, Java fern, mosses) fill out the scape. The species is reported to be kept in pairs or small groups, and multiple males can be maintained in a sufficiently large, well-structured tank, though territorial disputes occur.
Conservation
Betta enisae has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no current threat category. The absence of an assessment does not imply safety: the peat-swamp forest and blackwater drainage habitats of West Kalimantan face intense, ongoing pressure from palm oil plantation expansion, logging, drainage of peat lands for agriculture, and fire. The Kapuas River basin, though large, has experienced significant deforestation across its catchment, and the narrow-range, habitat-specialist species that depend on intact peat-swamp forest are among the most vulnerable to these changes.
FishBase notes that the species enters the ornamental fish trade and is also used as bait fish locally, adding direct harvest pressure to habitat loss. Captive breeding in the hobby community, where Betta enisae is maintained by specialist keepers and wild betta enthusiasts, provides a buffer population independent of wild collection, and sourcing captive-bred individuals is preferable whenever they are available.
