Betta falx is a small, soft-water mouthbrooder from the blackwater swamps and forest streams of central Sumatra, reaching around 1.5–2 in standard length and classified by the IUCN as Least Concern. A member of the picta group, it was formally described by Tan and Kottelat in 1998 from the Jambi Province of Indonesia, and has since become one of the more accessible wild bettas in the specialist hobby — valued for its unpretentious size, paternal mouthbrooding behaviour, and the sharp amber-copper tones the male displays at full colour.

Taxonomy & naming

Betta falx was described by Heok Hee Tan and Maurice Kottelat in 1998, with the type locality given as Sungai Alai, at kilometre 19.5 on the Muara Bungo–Muara Tebo road in Jambi Province, central Sumatra, Indonesia (approximately 1°28'42.6"S, 102°18'31.7"E). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Betta falx Tan & Kottelat, 1998. The species sits within the picta group of the genus Betta, a cluster of paternal mouthbrooders distributed across the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and the Lesser Sunda Islands.

The picta group is characterised by its mouthbrooding reproductive mode, which distinguishes it from the bubble-nesting splendens group that dominates the ornamental trade. Within the group, B. falx is part of the Sumatran contingent alongside species such as Betta cf. picta and related forms. The specific epithet falx is Latin for 'sickle' and likely refers to a curved morphological feature of the fish, though the original description should be consulted for the precise application.

Morphology

Betta falx is a slender, moderately elongate betta reaching roughly 1.5–2 in standard length, with most specimens in the trade running closer to the lower end of that range. The body form is typical of the picta group: cylindrical rather than compressed, with a pointed snout, a rounded caudal fin, and fin venation that is less elaborate than the long-finned domesticated forms most hobbyists know.

Colouration is subdued compared to domesticated Betta splendens strains but striking for a wild fish in good condition. Males display an overall brownish to copper-amber base with a blue-green iridescent sheen on the gill covers and lateral scales, and the fins may show banding or marginal colouration. Females are generally plainer and smaller. The gill covers carry the iridescent scaling characteristic of the picta group, and dominant males deepen in colour considerably when in breeding condition or during encounters with rivals.

Habitat

In nature Betta falx inhabits forest swamp streams and pools in the lowland blackwater systems of Jambi Province and surrounding areas of central Sumatra. The habitat is characterised by peat substrates, deep accumulations of leaf litter, and dense marginal and emergent vegetation that filters the light to low ambient levels. The water is typically near-stagnant to slowly flowing, heavily stained with tannins from decaying organic matter, and very soft and acidic.

Recorded pH values are around 4.7 — among the most extreme acidity documented for any aquarium fish — and the temperature in shaded peat-swamp habitat tends to run cooler than much of equatorial Sumatra, with Seriously Fish citing approximately 72 °F as a representative figure. Like all Betta, B. falx is a labyrinth fish: it possesses a suprabranchial accessory breathing organ that allows it to extract oxygen directly from air at the surface, an adaptation of obvious value in the low-oxygen, heavily organic waters it calls home. It is found primarily among submerged bank vegetation and leaf accumulations in the benthopelagic zone.

Feeding

Betta falx is an insectivore and small-invertebrate predator in the wild, taking insects, insect larvae, and other small prey items encountered in the leaf litter and surface film of its swamp habitat. The diet follows the general pattern of the genus in still, organic-rich waters: a fish adapted to picking off individual prey items rather than filter-feeding or grazing.

In captivity the species accepts a wide range of live and frozen foods with little hesitation — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm, and similar invertebrates are all taken readily. Reports from the IBC suggest it is not particularly finicky and will also accept suitable prepared foods once settled, making it less demanding on the feeding front than some other wild betta specialists.

Mating

Betta falx is a paternal mouthbrooder. Courtship is initiated by the female, who approaches and displays to the male; the pair then engage in the nuptial embrace typical of the genus, with the male wrapping around the female to fertilise the eggs as they are released. What follows diverges sharply from bubble-nesting bettas: the female collects the fertilised eggs in her mouth immediately after the embrace and then transfers them to the male, who takes over incubation.

The male's mouthbrooding begins at the point of transfer and continues through egg development and early larval life. During this period the male does not feed, holding the clutch in his buccal cavity. Displays between males involve spreading of gill covers and fins and intensification of colour, as in other bettas, and males maintain a low-level hierarchy in community settings.

Breeding

Once the male has accepted the eggs, he carries them internally for roughly one to two weeks depending on temperature before releasing free-swimming fry. The fry are relatively well developed at release compared to the newly hatched larvae of egg-scattering species, having completed much of their early development within the father's buccal cavity. Clutch sizes in the picta group tend to be modest — fewer eggs than bubble-nesting species, but each egg receives extended parental investment.

Breeders typically remove the mouthbrooding male to a separate container to avoid disturbance and to prevent fry from being eaten once released into a community setting. The fry are large enough at release to take Artemia nauplii and micro-worm immediately, making them relatively straightforward to raise. Water chemistry for breeding should replicate the soft, acidic conditions of the natural habitat — pH in the mid-fives to low sixes and very low hardness — as spawning in hard or alkaline water is unreliable. The IBC reports that aquarium pH of around 6.0–6.4 produces consistent results even if the natural extreme of pH 4.7 is not replicated.

In the aquarium

Betta falx has been in the specialist hobby for several decades and is described in older hobby literature as an ideal entry point into wild bettas — robust enough to tolerate reasonably attentive care, small enough for modest tank sizes, and willing to breed without extreme difficulty. A pair or small group can be housed in a tank of around 10–15 US gal, densely planted, with a dark substrate and liberal additions of dried leaf litter to replicate the tannin-rich blackwater environment. Low or diffused lighting and minimal flow suit the species well.

Water chemistry should be soft and acidic: pH in the range of 5.5–6.8 is workable, with very low hardness and temperature around 72–79 °F. The surface must be accessible — labyrinth fishes depend on atmospheric oxygen, and a tight-fitting lid prevents chilling and escapes (bettas are strong jumpers). Tankmates, if any, should be small, peaceable blackwater species that will not harass the male during mouthbrooding. The species is generally calm and non-aggressive outside of spawning encounters, and males can be kept together in sufficiently spacious and broken-up environments, though care is needed. Feeding on quality live and frozen invertebrates keeps fish in best colour and condition.

Conservation

Betta falx is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, most recently in 2019. The species is endemic to Sumatra, Indonesia, with its documented range centred on the Jambi Province and extending into parts of north Sumatra. Although its peat-swamp and forest-stream habitat is subject to ongoing pressure from land conversion, drainage, and oil-palm expansion across Sumatra, the species is not considered to face the severity of threat that would qualify it for a higher category at the time of last assessment.

From the aquarist's perspective, the species is long-established in captivity and tank-bred stock is readily available through wild-betta specialist groups and the IBC network, reducing dependence on wild collection. Maintaining captive populations of any geographically restricted Sumatran species contributes a buffer against habitat-driven declines, and the IBC and associated keeper communities provide a meaningful ex-situ network for the species.
