Taxonomy & naming
Betta foerschi was described by Jörg Vierke in 1979 on the basis of specimens collected from the Mentaya River system, approximately 155 mi north-west of Banjarmasin in what is now the Indonesian province of South Kalimantan, Borneo. The valid name, as governed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), is Betta foerschi Vierke, 1979; because the species was described directly in Betta, the author is not placed in parentheses.
The species anchors the foerschi group within Betta, a clade of paternal mouthbrooders distributed across the lowland forests of Sundaland. The foerschi group is characterised by a combination of mouthbrooding reproduction, modest size, and a preference for darkly stained, still or slow-moving water. Molecular studies have confirmed the placement of B. foerschi within this group, and a 2023–2024 paper recorded the species for the first time from Belitung Island — considerably extending the known range beyond the Bornean lowlands.
The specific epithet foerschi is a Latinised genitive of the surname Foersch, honouring the German aquarist and ichthyologist Walter Foersch, who contributed substantially to the early study and popularisation of wild Betta in the European hobby.
Morphology
Betta foerschi is a slender, somewhat elongate labyrinth fish reaching roughly 1.5–2 in in total length under aquarium conditions, with FishBase recording a maximum of 3 in TL. The body is laterally compressed and the caudal fin rounded, giving the overall profile typical of the mouthbrooding Betta species rather than the large, fan-finned bubble-nesters.
Colouration is subdued in comparison with domesticated ornamental bettas, but the males are nonetheless handsome fish. The base body colour is a warm brownish-olive to grey, overlaid with a blue-green iridescent sheen that intensifies on the flanks when the fish is in breeding condition or aroused. The fins — particularly the dorsal, anal, and caudal — often carry blue or red margins in males. Females are plainer, with weaker iridescence and shorter, less elaborate finnage; sexual dimorphism is moderate but becomes apparent at adult size. As with all wild Betta, colour is highly dependent on mood, condition, and lighting.
Habitat
In Borneo, Betta foerschi inhabits peat-swamp forest streams and standing pools in heavily shaded lowland terrain. These are classic blackwater environments: the water is tea-coloured from dissolved humic and tannic acids, extremely soft, and sharply acidic. Seriously Fish records the species from sites with pH in the range 4.0–6.0 and temperatures of 72–82 °F, and FishBase notes pH 5 as a characteristic value. Conductivity is very low. The combination of shade, leaf litter, and organic acids creates waters that are oxygen-limited relative to clear rivers, and it is in exactly these conditions that the labyrinth organ — the accessory breathing structure shared by all Betta — is most ecologically advantageous, freeing the fish from dependence on dissolved oxygen.
The fish keep to shallow margins, submerged root tangles, and pockets of aquatic vegetation where cover is dense. Their small size, cryptic colouring, and secretive nature make them easy to overlook in the field. The Belitung Island record extends the known distribution to a second landmass, suggesting either a broader original range than previously documented or historical dispersal across the Sunda Shelf during low sea-level periods of the Pleistocene.
Feeding
Betta foerschi is a carnivore, subsisting in the wild on small invertebrates both aquatic and terrestrial: insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and other soft-bodied prey that falls or lives within the leaf litter and surface film of its swamp habitat. Like other small Betta, it is a deliberate, stalking predator that approaches prey slowly before striking.
In the aquarium it readily accepts a range of live and frozen foods: Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp), bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), small Tubifex, and micro-worms are all suitable. High-quality small dried foods are taken by acclimatised fish, but live and frozen foods are important for bringing fish into breeding condition and should form the bulk of the diet. Overfeeding is a common error; small, frequent offerings are preferable to large meals.
Mating
Betta foerschi is a confirmed paternal mouthbrooder. Courtship follows a pattern seen across the foerschi group and wider mouthbrooding Betta: the male displays to the female with spread fins and intensified colouration, circling and orienting broadside to show his flanks and finnage at their best. The female responds by approaching the male and adopting a submissive posture if receptive.
Spawning takes the form of a series of nuptial embraces in which the pair intertwine — the male curling around the female — and eggs and sperm are released simultaneously. The fertilised eggs fall, and the female typically picks them up briefly before passing them to the male. The male collects the eggs into his buccal cavity, beginning the incubation period. The spawning session may involve multiple embraces over the course of an hour or more until the female has been fully spawned out.
Breeding
After the spawning embraces the male holds the fertilised eggs in his mouth, ceasing to feed for the duration of the incubation period. In paternal mouthbrooding Betta the male typically incubates the eggs and early fry for one to two and a half weeks, depending on temperature. He will not eat during this time and should not be disturbed. The eggs develop within the buccal cavity; the larvae pass through yolk-sac resorption while still inside the male, and he releases fully formed, free-swimming fry only once they are capable of independent foraging.
In an aquarium setting, the male is best left in a species tank or a large, well-planted tank with minimal disturbance. Attempting to force-strip the fry (removing eggs from the male prematurely) is possible but stressful and risks damaging the clutch. Released fry are small but generally able to take newly hatched brine shrimp or micro-worms from the start. Clutch sizes in the foerschi group are modest — typically a few dozen fry — which reflects the energetic investment of extended buccal incubation. Water temperature in the range 75–81 °F is suitable for breeding.
In the aquarium
Betta foerschi is a species for the specialist rather than the general community aquarist. It demands soft, acidic water that mirrors its blackwater origins: pH in the range 4.5–6.5, very low conductivity, and temperatures of 75–81 °F. Hard or alkaline water suppresses colour, impairs health, and makes breeding essentially impossible. Peat filtration, blackwater extract, and a substrate of dried leaf litter (Indian almond leaves are widely used) all help recreate the chemical environment the species requires.
The tank should be small to medium-sized — 10–20 US gal is ample for a pair or trio — and heavily planted or furnished with dense cover: driftwood, roots, and leaf litter are all appropriate. Lighting should be dim; Betta foerschi does not flourish under bright illumination and will show far better colour and behaviour in a shaded tank. Filtration must be gentle — a sponge filter at low flow is ideal — because the fish cannot tolerate strong currents and the species naturally inhabits near-still water. A tightly fitting lid is essential, as all Betta are capable jumpers and also require access to warm, humid air above the water surface for their labyrinth organ to function properly.
Betta foerschi should be kept in a species-only tank or with very small, non-competitive tankmates that share its blackwater requirements. Aggression between males is possible, and given the species' rarity in the hobby it is generally kept as a pair or harem (one male, two or three females). Sourcing captive-bred fish from reputable breeders is strongly preferred over wild-caught specimens both for ethical reasons and because captive-bred fish adapt more readily.
Conservation
Betta foerschi is listed as Endangered (EN), with FishBase and the scientific literature consistently applying this status. The species has an inherently restricted range — it is known from the peat-swamp lowlands of central and southern Borneo and from Belitung Island, both areas subject to significant and ongoing habitat loss. Peat-swamp forest, the primary habitat for this and many related Betta, has been drained and converted to oil palm plantation and agricultural land across Kalimantan at a pace that is among the highest rates of tropical deforestation globally. The drainage of peat swamps not only destroys the specific water chemistry the species requires but also releases vast quantities of stored carbon and is effectively irreversible on any human timescale.
Collection pressure for the ornamental fish trade, while probably less severe for this species than for more charismatic aquarium fish, is an additional concern for a fish with such a limited distribution and specialised habitat requirements. The Belitung Island record is scientifically significant in modestly enlarging the known range, but it also raises questions about the state of that population. Conservation of B. foerschi is inseparable from the broader conservation of lowland peat-swamp ecosystems in Sundaland — a task that requires political and land-use solutions well beyond the scope of any aquarist intervention, though support for captive-breeding programmes and responsible sourcing from breeders rather than wild collection remains the practical contribution the hobby can make.
