Confined to the remote Maliau Basin of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, Betta gladiator is one of the most range-restricted members of the unimaculata group — a clade of large, paternal mouthbrooding wild bettas found across Borneo and the surrounding region. The species inhabits blackwater heath-forest streams on an isolated plateau, at pH values that would shock most freshwater aquarists; the water it calls home is among the most acidic produced by any Bornean lowland system. Although assessed as Least Concern by virtue of the basin's protected status, that protection is itself the only thing standing between the fish and a genuinely precarious future.

Taxonomy & naming

Betta gladiator was formally described by Heok Hee Tan and Peter K.L. Ng in 2005 in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology Supplement 13 (pages 43–99), a landmark revision of the genus Betta that formally characterised several unimaculata-group species from Borneo. The holotype was collected from a stream roughly two kilometres along Jalan Babi towards the Maliau Falls, within the Maliau Basin at approximately 5°14′N 116°53′E in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Paratypes are deposited at the Cambridge Museum of Zoology (CMK), the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (RMNH), the Sabah Museum (SBM), and the Zoological Reference Collection of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (ZRC).

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Betta gladiator Tan & Ng, 2005 (family Osphronemidae, subfamily Macropodusinae), and the species is placed in the unimaculata group — a natural assemblage of large, mouthbrooding bettas sharing a suite of morphological characters that set them apart from the bubble-nesting species most aquarists associate with the genus. The 2013 Kottelat checklist of the freshwater fishes of the Sunda region also references this taxon, confirming its acceptance in the broader regional literature. Distribution extends to northern Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) in addition to Sabah, though the species' range remains narrow by any standard.

The specific epithet gladiator, Latin for 'swordsman' or 'gladiator', alludes to the aggressive, territorial nature of the males, which defend spacing territories in the stream and engage in direct combat with rivals.

Morphology

Betta gladiator is a relatively large wild betta, reaching 3–3.5 in standard length (SL) — roughly 3.5 in — which places it firmly among the larger members of the unimaculata group. Tan and Ng's original description identifies a suite of diagnostic characters: the absence of sheath scales at the anal-fin base, the absence of a dorsal-fin spine, 33–34 vertebrae, 28–31 anal-fin rays (modal count 30), and 7–9 dorsal-fin rays (modal count 8).

The general body colour is yellowish-brown with a bluish iridescence on the opercle (gill cover), one of the more striking colour features on an otherwise subtly marked fish. The caudal fin is plain brown. Fin shapes and body proportions are consistent with the unimaculata group's elongate, slightly compressed form. As in other members of the group, males tend to be larger and more boldly coloured than females, and both sexes develop the labyrinth organ — the accessory air-breathing structure situated above the gills — that defines the suborder Anabantoidei.

Habitat

Betta gladiator is endemic to the Maliau Basin in the interior of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo — a naturally bounded sandstone plateau sometimes described as Sabah's 'Lost World'. The basin is geologically isolated, its rim acting as a drainage divide that has allowed distinct biological communities to evolve in relative separation from the surrounding lowlands. The type-locality stream lies within heath forest (also called kerangas), a vegetation type dominated by small, sclerophyllous trees growing on impoverished, highly leached sandy soils.

The water chemistry of heath-forest streams draining these substrates is extreme by any freshwater standard: pH values of 4.2–4.8 were recorded at the type locality, and the species tolerates conditions from pH 4.0 to 6.0 across its range. Water is very soft (GH 1–6 °dH) and stained by humic acids leached from leaf litter and peat, the characteristic blackwater of Bornean heath systems. Temperatures in the Maliau Basin are mild for Borneo — 72–81 °F — partly a function of the basin's elevation and the canopy cover that shades the streams.

Like all labyrinth fishes, Betta gladiator relies on its suprabranchial organ to breathe atmospheric air directly, which permits it to inhabit warm, oxygen-depleted water where gill-breathing fishes would be stressed. The streams it occupies are typically still to slow-flowing, heavily shaded, and blanketed with fallen leaves — conditions that strip dissolved oxygen while providing abundant invertebrate prey.

Feeding

Betta gladiator is a carnivore feeding on small invertebrates in nature. The diet documented from wild populations and from closely related unimaculata-group bettas includes aquatic insects and their larvae, terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface, small crustaceans such as freshwater shrimp, and zooplankton. The species' combination of ambush posture, relatively large mouth, and territoriality is consistent with a sit-and-wait predator that takes advantage of invertebrates drifting through or falling into its stream territory.

In captivity, live and frozen invertebrates form the ideal diet: bloodworm (chironomid larvae), Daphnia, mosquito larvae, small earthworms, and Artemia nauplii are all accepted. Fry initially take microworm and Artemia nauplii once they are free-swimming at around 0.5 in. Adults can be conditioned to accept high-quality dried foods over time, though a diet based primarily on frozen and live items produces better colouration and breeding condition in keeping with the species' carnivorous natural history.

Mating

Betta gladiator is a paternal mouthbrooder — one of the reproductive modes that characterises the unimaculata group and distinguishes these large Bornean bettas sharply from the bubble-nesting bettas (such as Betta splendens) that most hobbyists know. Courtship involves sustained territorial displays by the male, who defends a territory of roughly one metre in stream habitats; wild observations show adults spaced approximately one metre apart with juveniles maintained nearby, indicating a level of social structure linked to the male's territorial behaviour.

During courtship, the male displays laterally to the female, erecting his fins and intensifying his opercular colour to signal condition and dominance. Once the female accepts the male, the pair embrace in the manner typical of anabantoids: the male wraps his body around the female, and eggs are fertilised externally during a series of embraces. The fertilised eggs are then collected and taken into the male's buccal cavity.

Breeding

Following spawning, the male carries the fertilised eggs in his mouth for an extended incubation period of 14 to 35 days — an unusually long range that probably reflects temperature variation and the male's individual condition. During incubation the male eats nothing and retreats to a sheltered area; disturbance during this period is a serious stressor and can cause the male to swallow the brood, a documented failure mode in captive breeding of this species and other unimaculata-group bettas.

Fry emerge free-swimming at approximately 0.5 in, at which point the male releases them. They are immediately capable of feeding on very small live foods: microworm and Artemia nauplii are the standard first foods, and growth is fairly rapid under good conditions compared to bubble-nester fry. In aquarium breeding, the male is typically removed to a separate container once the female shows signs of being complete; alternatively, the whole pair is given a species-only setup with ample cover, and the male allowed to carry to term without interference. Males in a group setting should be kept in visual isolation or in very large tanks with broken lines of sight, as territorial aggression extends to conspecific males and can disrupt brooding.

In the aquarium

Betta gladiator is an uncommon species in the hobby, kept primarily by specialists in wild bettas and Bornean fishes rather than the general aquarium market. Its basic requirements reflect its blackwater heath-forest origins: very soft, acidic water (pH 4.0–6.0, GH 1–6 °dH), subdued lighting, a substrate of peat, sand, or fine gravel with a generous covering of dried leaf litter (Indian almond or Catappa leaves are widely used), and dense cover with driftwood and aquatic or emergent plants tolerant of acidic conditions. Temperature should sit in the 72–81 °F range; the slightly cooler end of this spectrum — matching the Maliau Basin's highland microclimate — is appropriate and supports good health.

Being a labyrinth fish, the species must have unobstructed access to the water surface to gulp air. Filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter running at low flow is ideal, replicating the nearly still waters of the type locality and avoiding surface turbulence that would impede air-breathing. Males are strongly territorial toward conspecifics and will fight; a pair or a male-and-multiple-females arrangement in a well-planted, species-only aquarium is the practical approach. Given the territorial spacing of roughly one metre observed in nature, a tank of 31.5 in or more in length is appropriate for a pair, with larger tanks needed for a group.

The species is not commonly available and generally circulates through wild-betta hobbyist networks and specialist breeders. Anyone keeping it should prioritise captive-bred stock to reduce wild collection pressure from an already restricted population.

Conservation

Betta gladiator is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The justification rests almost entirely on the protected status of the Maliau Basin Conservation Area, within which the type locality and the core of the species' known range fall. The basin's protection has, to date, limited the habitat degradation and collection pressure that have threatened other narrowly endemic Bornean bettas.

The biological reality, however, is that the species' range is exceptionally small — essentially a single highland basin — and any change in the protection regime, or any reduction in the basin's water quality or stream connectivity, could shift the conservation status rapidly. Hobbyist sources note that the Least Concern designation implicitly requires reassessment if that protective status changes. The Maliau Basin does attract research and conservation attention precisely because of its isolation and endemic biodiversity, which provides some institutional incentive to maintain protection.

In the aquarium trade the species is uncommon; wild collection is not thought to be a current driver of decline, but the precautionary logic of supporting captive-breeding programmes applies here as it does to all narrowly endemic wild bettas.
