Taxonomy & naming
Betta hipposideros was described by Peter Ng and Maurice Kottelat in 1994. The type localities are peat-swamp forests in Selangor and Perak, Peninsular Malaysia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Betta hipposideros Ng & Kottelat, 1994, and the species has not been synonymised or renamed since its description.
The species belongs to the waseri group, a cluster of large paternal mouthbrooders within the genus Betta that share broadly similar body plans and ecology — all are peat-swamp or blackwater specialists of the Sunda region. The waseri group includes several species described in the 1990s and 2000s as collecting efforts penetrated previously unsurveyed swamp forests, and molecular and morphological work on the group continues. The specific epithet hipposideros is derived from the Greek for 'horseshoe', a reference to a characteristic of the species' head profile noted by the authors at description.
Morphology
Betta hipposideros is a large betta, reaching approximately 3 in standard length, with FishBase recording a maximum of 3 in SL. Like other members of the waseri group it is elongate and moderately robust for the genus, with a notably broad head — the feature that drew the authors' attention when naming the species. Coloration is relatively subdued compared with the fighting fish and the smaller anabantoids: a brownish to greyish-green base with faint iridescence, the scales edged so that a subtle reticulate pattern shows in good light.
Sexual dimorphism is present. Males tend to be more intensely coloured with more extended fins, and they develop the distinctly broader head that characterises the group, which presumably facilitates mouthbrooding. Females are generally plainer and less deep-headed. As with all Betta, the labyrinth organ — the accessory air-breathing structure in the suprabranchial chamber — is visible as a slight swelling behind and above the operculum in lateral view.
Habitat
Betta hipposideros is an obligate inhabitant of tropical peat-swamp blackwater, a habitat type that is among the most chemically extreme of any freshwater environment. Its known range spans peat swamps in Selangor and Perak in Peninsular Malaysia and in Riau province on Sumatra (including the Riau Islands), where it occurs in slow-moving to stagnant water permeated by tannins and humic acids leaching from the accumulated peat.
Water conditions in these habitats are exceptional: pH as low as 3.0–4.0 has been recorded in natural blackwater peat swamps, with the typical aquarium-appropriate range placed at pH 3.5–6.0; total hardness is negligible; temperatures run 72–82 °F. The habitat is structurally complex — dense leaf litter, submerged root masses, and overhanging vegetation create a dark, still microenvironment. Dissolved oxygen is low, which is precisely the selective pressure that drove the evolution of the labyrinth organ in anabantoids. B. hipposideros is found in sympatry with Betta coccina, B. fusca, and B. simorum in parts of its Sumatran range, a community of red-listed blackwater specialists sharing the same imperilled peat-swamp ecosystem.
Feeding
In the wild Betta hipposideros is a predator of small invertebrates, taking small insects and their larvae, zooplankton, and other arthropods that fall into or live within the leaf-litter layer of peat swamps. The species is not an open-water pursuit predator; it is an ambush and gleaning feeder adapted to slow, still conditions where energy economy matters.
In the aquarium it accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods readily — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and similar small live or frozen items. Dry foods are often taken after acclimatisation but should not be the staple; the fish does best on a diet centred on high-protein invertebrate matter that closely reflects the natural diet.
Mating
Betta hipposideros is a paternal mouthbrooder, a reproductive strategy shared across the waseri group. Courtship follows the pattern typical of mouthbrooding Betta: the male displays to a receptive female with extended finnage and intensified colouring. The pair engage in a characteristic anabantoid embrace in which the male wraps his body around the female; fertilisation is external and occurs during the embrace, with the eggs and sperm released simultaneously.
After spawning the male collects the fertilised eggs into his mouth. The female may assist in picking up stray eggs and passing them to the male, but once brooding begins the male assumes sole responsibility for the clutch. He does not feed during the brooding period, which typically lasts ten to twenty-one days depending on temperature. The broad head morphology characteristic of waseri-group males is thought to provide the extra buccal volume needed to carry a clutch of relatively large eggs through to the late-fry stage.
Breeding
Breeding Betta hipposideros in captivity requires water chemistry that replicates the extreme acidity of its native peat swamps — pH in the range 4.0–6.0 is generally recommended, achieved with peat filtration, catappa (Indian almond) leaves, and RO or very soft water. Attempting to breed the species in neutral or alkaline tap water is unlikely to succeed and may compromise the health of both fish. Temperature should be maintained at 75–81 °F.
A brooding male should not be disturbed; some keepers move him to a separate container once brooding is confirmed to protect him from harassment. The incubation period runs roughly ten to twenty-one days. When the male releases the fry they are already relatively large and advanced — at the free-swimming stage they are capable of taking microworm and Artemia nauplii immediately, which simplifies rearing compared to species with tiny fry requiring infusoria. The male should be removed after releasing the fry, as he may eat them once his parental drive subsides. Clutch sizes in waseri-group bettas are typically modest compared with bubble-nesters.
In the aquarium
Betta hipposideros is a specialist fish suited to experienced keepers who can maintain the extreme blackwater chemistry it requires. A dedicated species tank is strongly preferred; the soft, acidic, tannin-stained water it needs is incompatible with most community fish, and its large size (to ~3 in SL) and predatory nature rule out small tankmates. A pair or single specimen can be housed in a tank of 23.5–31.5 in in length with dense leaf-litter cover, subdued or indirect lighting, and very gentle filtration — the fish comes from still or barely moving water and does not tolerate strong currents.
As a labyrinth fish B. hipposideros must have unobstructed access to the water surface to breathe atmospheric air; covering the tank is essential to keep the humid air layer above the water warm and to prevent escape. Regular small water changes with matched-chemistry soft acidic water are preferable to large infrequent changes, which can destabilise the carefully maintained pH. Males can be aggressive toward one another and potentially toward females outside of spawning condition; a single pair is the standard arrangement. This is not a fish for beginners, but for the keeper prepared to invest in correct water chemistry it is a rewarding and rarely seen species in the hobby.
Conservation
Betta hipposideros is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. The primary threat is habitat loss: lowland peat-swamp forest in Malaysia and Sumatra has been cleared and drained at very high rates for agriculture, particularly oil palm, pulpwood plantations, and smallholder farming. Peat swamps are among the most threatened ecosystems in Southeast Asia.
The species' range within those habitats is fragmented and continues to shrink as drainage and conversion proceed. B. hipposideros does not tolerate modified habitats or altered water chemistry, which makes it one of the more sensitive indicators of intact peat-swamp condition. It shares this vulnerability with its range-mates B. coccina, B. fusca, and B. simorum, all of which face comparable pressures. Captive populations exist among specialist hobbyists and occasionally in public aquaria, but there is no formal ex-situ conservation programme. Protecting the remaining peat-swamp blocks in Selangor, Perak, and Riau is the only durable path to the species' survival.
