Taxonomy & naming
Betta ibanorum was described by Heok Hui Tan and Peter K. L. Ng in 2004, in a paper published in the Sarawak Museum Journal (volume 59, number 80, Special Issue No. 6: 267–284). The type locality is Bako National Park in southern Sarawak, on the island of Borneo. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Betta ibanorum Tan & Ng, 2004.
The specific epithet ibanorum is a genitive plural referring to the Iban people, the largest indigenous group of Sarawak, whose traditional territory encompasses much of the species' range. The name honours both the people and, implicitly, the landscapes they have inhabited and — in many cases — stewarded.
The species belongs to the akarensis species group within Betta, a cluster of large-to-medium mouthbrooding bettas distributed across Borneo and the Malay Peninsula. Within the group, B. ibanorum is distinguished by a combination of characters: a yellow iris in life, 27–29 anal-fin rays (mode 28), and the absence of a second postorbital stripe on the opercle — the latter character separating it from the closely related B. akarensis, which bears an uninterrupted second stripe. Multiple colour forms differing by locality have been noted within the species' range across southern and western Sarawak.
Morphology
Betta ibanorum reaches a standard length of roughly 3–3.5 in (approximately 3 in SL), with FishBase recording a maximum of 3 in SL. A research study on wild-caught specimens documented a total-length range of 2–4.5 in and body mass of 1.61–11.74 g, indicating that large adults can approach or exceed 4 in in total length. The body form is elongate and moderately compressed, consistent with other mouthbrooding bettas in the akarensis group.
Colouration varies by locality — multiple colour forms are recognised across the species' range in southern and western Sarawak — but the yellow iris in live fish is a consistent and useful diagnostic character. Ground colour is typically brownish to greyish with iridescent scale highlights. The opercle bears only the first postorbital stripe, distinguishing this species from B. akarensis, which carries a second uninterrupted stripe. Fins are moderately developed; males in breeding condition display heightened pigmentation. Sexual dimorphism is present: males are larger and more intensely coloured, females more subdued and smaller-bodied.
Habitat
Betta ibanorum is a specialist of blackwater environments in southern Sarawak. It inhabits peat swamp forests — deeply waterlogged ecosystems where accumulated peat releases humic and fulvic acids into the water, producing the characteristic amber-to-tea colour and extreme acidity — as well as clear forest streams and associated drainage systems. The type locality, Bako National Park, protects a fragment of such coastal heath and peat swamp forest on the Muara Tebas Peninsula near Kuching.
Water chemistry in these habitats is among the most extreme encountered by any aquarium fish. Recorded pH values for B. ibanorum localities span 3.0–4.0, placing the water firmly in the highly acidic blackwater category. Temperatures in the region run 75–82 °F (75–82 °F). Conductivity is extremely low and hardness negligible, as mineral-poor rainwater filtered through peat acquires almost no dissolved salts. Dissolved oxygen is also low in stagnant peat-swamp pools, making the labyrinth organ — the suprabranchial air-breathing accessory organ possessed by all Betta species — functionally indispensable. Access to the water surface for aerial respiration is essential.
The IUCN assessment documents the species from seven threat-based locations across southern Sarawak, with an extent of occurrence below 20,0 mi². The Bako National Park population has some formal protection; populations elsewhere are more exposed.
Feeding
Betta ibanorum is a carnivore, and its natural diet in the insect-rich microhabitats of peat-swamp forest includes small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — dipteran larvae, small crustaceans such as amphipods and ostracods, and surface-fallen insects. The still or slow-moving water of peat swamps concentrates invertebrate prey at the surface and among submerged leaf litter and root tangles, and wild bettas in these habitats are opportunistic rather than selective in their feeding.
In the aquarium, the species responds well to live and frozen invertebrate foods: Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp), mosquito larvae, and bloodworm are all readily accepted and support good condition and colour. High-quality small pellets designed for carnivorous fish may be taken once the fish is settled, but live or frozen items should form the core of the diet. Feeding should be appropriately measured — peat-swamp habitats are often food-poor, and bettas are not adapted to continuous excess.
Mating
Betta ibanorum is a paternal mouthbrooder, following the reproductive mode characteristic of the akarensis group. Courtship begins with male display: the male intensifies his colouration, extends his fins, and approaches the female with lateral posturing. Courtship in mouthbrooding bettas is typically less frenzied than in bubble-nesting species; pairs may spend hours in close proximity before spawning commences.
Spawning involves the characteristic anabantoid embrace, in which the male curves his body around the female. As both fish release gametes, fertilisation occurs in the water column or at the body surface. The fertilised eggs — denser than water — sink briefly before the male collects them into his buccal cavity. No bubble nest is constructed; the male's mouth is the incubation chamber from the moment spawning is complete. The female's role ends at spawning; subsequent brood care is entirely the male's responsibility.
Breeding
Once the male has collected the clutch of fertilised eggs, he broods them in his buccal cavity without feeding for the duration of incubation. Seriously Fish records an incubation period of 14–21 days for B. ibanorum, which is towards the longer end of the range within the akarensis group and consistent with the relatively cool, low-energy conditions of deep peat-swamp habitats. During this period the male should not be disturbed, as chronic stress can cause him to swallow or prematurely expel the brood.
The fry are released as free-swimming juveniles. Brood sizes are modest, as is typical for mouthbrooding bettas; precise clutch-size data for B. ibanorum specifically is sparse in the available literature. Fry are relatively large at release and accept newly hatched brine shrimp and micro-worms as first foods. Soft, acidic water — matching the conditions of the type locality — supports early fry development. Regular small water changes maintain quality without the sharp chemistry swings that can stress newly released juveniles. Males should generally be separated from females after fry release and allowed to recover feeding condition before any subsequent breeding attempt.
In the aquarium
Betta ibanorum is rare in the aquarium hobby — Seriously Fish notes it is more commonly caught for local food use than for export — and is a species for experienced keepers who can replicate its demanding blackwater chemistry. A dedicated species tank is strongly preferred: the extreme acidity (pH 3.0–4.0 in nature, or at minimum pH 4.0–5.5 in captivity) is incompatible with most community fish, and the gentle filtration and still-water conditions required conflict with the flow preferences of many tankmates.
A tank of 23.5–31.5 in in length suits a pair, decorated with driftwood, dried leaf litter (Indian almond leaves are ideal), and surface-floating plants to diffuse light and build a humid air layer above the water surface — critical for the labyrinth organ's function and for the male during brooding. Water should be very soft and acidic; RO water adjusted with peat extract or commercial blackwater conditioner is the practical approach outside of regions with naturally soft water. Temperature 75–82 °F (75–82 °F). Filtration should be minimal in flow terms — a small sponge filter is standard — to maintain the near-still conditions of peat-swamp pools. A tight-fitting lid is essential, both to retain the warm, humid air layer and to prevent escape.
Given its rarity and conservation status, sourcing captive-bred stock rather than wild-caught fish is strongly encouraged where any is available.
Conservation
Betta ibanorum is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), with the assessment published in 2019 (version 2019-2) based on an evaluation dated 24 December 2018. The listing reflects an extent of occurrence below 20,0 mi², restriction to seven threat-based locations in southern Sarawak, and ongoing decline in the quality of its peat-swamp and heath-forest habitat.
The principal threats documented by the IUCN assessment are habitat loss through the conversion of peat-swamp and heath forest to industrial forestry and monoculture plantations — primarily oil palm. Drainage of peatlands for agriculture alters hydrology irreversibly, eliminating the standing water and chemical conditions on which this species depends. The IUCN assessment estimated an extinction probability of 3–51% between 2010 and 2050 attributable to habitat loss, a wide range reflecting genuine uncertainty about the rate of future conversion. Population trend is currently recorded as unknown.
The species does occur within Bako National Park, providing some degree of protection for at least one locality. However, the park's small size and the broad footprint of land-use change across southern Sarawak make it insufficient as a sole refuge. Retention and restoration of peat-swamp forest, combined with better survey data on the species' actual distribution, are the priorities for its long-term security.
