Taxonomy & naming
Betta kuehnei was described by Ingo Schindler and Jörg Schmidt in 2008 in the Bulletin of Fish Biology (10(1/2): 39–46), based on material collected from a shaded forest stream approximately 22 mi south of Panjang in Kelantan state, northeastern Peninsular Malaysia. The valid name as recognised in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Betta kuehnei Schindler & Schmidt, 2008.
The species belongs to the pugnax group, an assemblage of paternal mouthbrooders distributed across the Thai–Malay Peninsula and northern Borneo. The pugnax group is distinguished from bubble-nesting Betta by its reproductive mode and by a suite of morphological characters; within it, kuehnei is most closely associated with taxa sharing clear-water, shaded-forest-stream habitats. Sympatric species at the type locality include Trichopsis vittata and Parosphromenus paludicola, both indicators of slow, vegetated lowland or foothill streams.
The specific epithet honours a person named Kühn, following the Latinised genitive form standard for patronymic species names.
Morphology
Betta kuehnei is a moderately sized wild betta reaching 2–2.5 in standard length. Like other pugnax-group members it has the stocky, somewhat cylindrical body plan typical of mouthbrooding Betta, with a subterminal mouth suited to picking prey from the substrate and leaf litter.
Sexual dimorphism is present and follows the pattern common to the group: males are somewhat larger than females, carry iridescent scaling on the head and cheeks, have a broader head profile, and possess more extended fins. Females are plainer and smaller-bodied. Precise colouration details for wild-caught specimens are not well documented in the available literature beyond the presence of iridescent scaling on the male's head.
Habitat
The type locality is a shaded, forested creek with clear, colourless water — the hallmark of undisturbed lowland and foothill forest streams on the Malay Peninsula. The species has been collected in shallow areas among beds of Cryptocoryne cordata and among accumulated leaf litter on the stream bed, habitats characteristic of slow or gently flowing, well-shaded watercourses.
Water parameters recorded at the type locality during August 2008 were pH 7.0, total hardness 3°dGH, and temperature approximately 77 °F — softer and slightly less acidic than the blackwater peat swamps associated with some other Malaysian bettas. The species appears to inhabit the transition zone between true blackwater and clearer forest stream types. As a labyrinth fish, Betta kuehnei breathes atmospheric air via the suprabranchial organ and can tolerate the low dissolved-oxygen concentrations common in still or sluggish forest-stream pools; access to the surface is an ecological requirement.
The species' range spans northeastern Peninsular Malaysia (Kelantan state) and adjacent Narathiwat province in southern Thailand.
Feeding
In its natural habitat Betta kuehnei is believed to feed on insects, small invertebrates, and zooplankton taken from the water column, the surface film, and the leaf-litter layer — the generalised opportunistic diet shared by most wild bettas. The shallow, vegetated stream margins it inhabits offer a regular supply of small prey items associated with aquatic macrophytes and decaying leaf matter.
In captivity the species accepts dried foods but thrives on a diet that includes small live and frozen items such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and bloodworm. A varied diet supports good colour and breeding condition.
Mating
Betta kuehnei is a paternal mouthbrooder, as are all members of the pugnax group. Males court females with fin displays and lateral presentations; mating involves the characteristic embrace of mouthbrooding Betta, in which the male wraps around the female to fertilise the eggs as they are released. Following the embrace the male collects the fertilised eggs into his mouth.
Sexual dimorphism — the male's broader head, iridescent cheek scaling, and more elaborate fins — reflects the visual component of mate assessment in the group. Males can be territorial and aggressive toward one another, as is typical for the genus.
Breeding
After the spawning embrace, the male carries the fertilised eggs in his buccal cavity for approximately 9–16 days, eating nothing during this period. At the end of incubation he releases free-swimming fry, which are thereafter independent; in the pugnax group the male typically holds until the fry are at a stage where they can fend for themselves.
In the aquarium, breeders generally maintain pairs or small groups and provide the male with a retreat where he can brood undisturbed. Because the male fasts during incubation, condition prior to spawning matters. The fry are small at release and require appropriately sized first foods — infusoria or freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii are standard starting points.
In the aquarium
Betta kuehnei is not considered a community fish in the conventional sense. The species can be maintained in pairs or in a group, but tankmates should be chosen with care — calm, non-boisterous fish that will not outcompete it or nip its fins. Its preference for shaded, still water should be reflected in the aquarium: dim or diffused lighting, gentle filtration that produces minimal current, a layer of floating plants or leaf litter to break the surface, and a tight-fitting cover to maintain a warm, humid air layer above the waterline (essential for the labyrinth organ).
Recommended water conditions follow those of the type locality: temperature 70–77 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, and low hardness (0–90 ppm). The species tolerates a range around these values but does poorly in hard, alkaline, or brightly lit conditions. A species tank or a carefully selected biotope community is the preferred approach for serious keepers.
Conservation
Betta kuehnei is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 12 January 2019. The DD listing does not indicate that the species is not threatened; rather, it reflects an insufficient evidence base to assign a category. The available information at the time of assessment did not allow population size, trend, or area of occupancy to be quantified with enough confidence for a threatened or near-threatened determination.
The broader context is concerning. Lowland forest streams in Kelantan and Narathiwat — the only known range of the species — have experienced pressure from deforestation and land conversion across the Sunda region. The 2019 Sunda region freshwater fish review highlighted habitat loss from deforestation in Southeast Asian lowland forests as a key pressure on species in this category. A species dependent on intact riparian forest canopy and the stable hydrology it provides is inherently vulnerable to catchment disturbance. More field survey work is needed to determine the true extent of B. kuehnei's range and population status before a more informative assessment can be made.
