Betta pallifina was described by Heok Hee Tan and Peter Ng Kee Lin in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology Supplement No. 13, a monograph-length revision of the fighting fishes of Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei covering the genus Betta across the Sundaland region. The paper runs across pages 43–99 of that supplement and provides morphological diagnoses, distribution data, and comparisons with closely related species for a large suite of Betta taxa. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats the name as valid with the authority Tan & Ng, 2004.
The species belongs to the unimaculata species group, an assemblage of large, slender mouthbrooding bettas distributed across Borneo and the Malay Peninsula and characterised by an elongated body, a large and relatively broad head, a lanceolate caudal fin, and the absence of the iridescent blue or red fin patterning associated with the fighting-fish complex. Within the group, B. pallifina is distinguished by several meristic and proportional characters: the predorsal length falls in the range 64.6–69.4% of standard length, head width is 17.7–20.8% of standard length, females carry an orange subdistal band in the anal fin, and the modal count of subdorsal scales is six. The specific epithet pallifina is Latin in derivation, roughly translatable as 'pale-finned', consistent with the group's generally understated fin colouration.
Morphology
Adults reach 3–3.5 in in standard length, placing B. pallifina among the larger members of the unimaculata group, though still well within the moderate-size range for the genus as a whole. The body is elongated and roughly cylindrical rather than laterally compressed in the manner of splendens-group bettas, tapering toward a distinctly lanceolate caudal fin whose central rays are produced into a point. The head is large and blunt, contributing to the subtly robust impression of the fish; head width relative to standard length is notably broad compared with the slender fighting-fish complex.
Colouration is subdued and iridescent rather than the saturated reds and blues associated with trade bettas. The flanks carry a pale to medium brown base overlaid with varying degrees of greenish or bluish iridescent scaling, particularly on the head and opercular region; the intensity of the iridescence is mood- and light-dependent and increases markedly in displaying or aroused individuals. Females are identified by the orange subdistal band visible in the anal fin, a consistent character noted in the original description. Males are typically larger, show a broader head, and develop more pronounced fin extension with maturity.
Habitat
Betta pallifina is known from the upper Barito river drainage in Central Kalimantan (Kalimantan Tengah), the Indonesian part of Borneo. The upper Barito and its tributaries drain a remote, heavily forested region of the island's interior highlands, and the species has been recorded from forested headwater streams — shallow, clear, flowing channels shaded by dense riparian and marginal vegetation, with substrates of sand, gravel, and accumulated leaf litter. Dense stands of marginal plants fringe the banks and provide both shelter and hunting ground.
Water chemistry in these Bornean forest streams is typically soft and moderately acidic, reflecting the organic inputs of leaf litter and the limited buffering capacity of sandy upland soils. Recorded parameters for the species span pH 5.5–7.5 with temperatures of 72–81 °F and low to moderate hardness (0–90 ppm). As a labyrinth fish, B. pallifina breathes atmospheric air via the suprabranchial organ and tolerates the reduced dissolved oxygen common in warm, still forest pools; in flowing headwater habitats, oxygenation is generally higher, but the labyrinth organ remains essential during drought or in trapped pools cut off from the main channel. The remoteness of the upper Barito system means that very few biological surveys have been conducted there, and the full extent of the species' range within the drainage remains incompletely known.
Feeding
In its headwater stream habitat, Betta pallifina is a predator of small invertebrates. The natural diet consists primarily of insects — both aquatic larvae and terrestrial individuals that fall or fly onto the water surface — along with small crustaceans and other invertebrates encountered among the leaf litter and marginal vegetation. The ambush posture typical of the genus, hovering motionless before a rapid lunge, suits this kind of opportunistic, prey-reactive hunting in cluttered, low-flow environments.
In captivity the species adapts readily to a diet of live and frozen invertebrate foods: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and small earthworm pieces are all accepted. As with most bettas, offering a varied diet with a high proportion of live or frozen items keeps the fish in better condition and more likely to colour up and spawn than a monotonous prepared-food diet alone. Small, frequent offerings suit the species' steady-foraging lifestyle better than single large meals.
Mating
Like all members of the unimaculata group, Betta pallifina is a paternal mouthbrooder rather than a bubble-nester, and its mating behaviour reflects that reproductive strategy. Courtship involves extended mutual assessment between male and female: the male displays his iridescent head and flank colouration, spreads his fins, and orientates laterally and head-on toward the female to advertise his condition. Interactions can persist for hours and occasionally involve chasing and minor fin damage before the pair synchronise sufficiently to spawn.
Spawning itself follows the typical embrace pattern of the genus — the male wraps around the female and fertilisation occurs externally as eggs and sperm are released together — but in mouthbrooding bettas the eggs are not built into a foam nest. Instead, the male immediately collects the fertilised eggs and takes them into his buccal cavity, where they will be incubated throughout development. The female may assist in collecting eggs after each embrace before passing them to the male, and multiple embraces typically occur in a single spawning session until the male's mouth is full.
Breeding
After the spawning embrace, the male of Betta pallifina incubates the fertilised eggs entirely within his mouth for 10–17 days, taking no food during this period. The duration of oral incubation is temperature-dependent — warmer water within the recommended range shortens development — and the male should not be disturbed or stressed during brooding, as agitated males may prematurely swallow or spit the clutch. A quiet, species-only or very peaceful tank with ample hiding cover is advisable when a pair is conditioned to breed.
At the end of incubation the male releases fully formed, free-swimming fry of approximately 0.5 in or more, already capable of active hunting. Unlike the tiny, fragile larvae of bubble-nesters, mouthbrooder fry are relatively robust at release and accept motile live foods immediately — newly hatched Artemia nauplii and micro-worm are the standard first foods. The male's parental role ends at release; the fry should be separated from adults thereafter to prevent predation. Breeders typically condition pairs on a rich live-food diet and separate males into breeding tanks once the female shows obvious gravidity.
In the aquarium
Betta pallifina is an infrequently encountered species in the aquarium trade, reflecting both its remote natural range and the still-limited familiarity of the unimaculata complex among hobbyists outside specialist betta circles. When available, captive-bred stock from betta breeders is strongly preferred over wild-caught individuals. It is a calm, relatively peaceful fish by betta standards — the unimaculata group lacks the intense inter-male aggression of splendens-group bettas — though males should be kept singly or watched carefully if housed together.
An aquarium of 15–20 US gal is sufficient for a pair or a small group, heavily planted and with a tightly fitting lid: labyrinth fishes breathe surface air and will leap through any gap. Gentle or near-absent surface agitation suits the species' still, forested headwater origins; a sponge filter or slow canister turnover provides biological filtration without strong current. Water chemistry should reflect the soft, mildly acidic conditions of the upper Barito: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 72–79 °F, and low hardness. Tankmates, if any, should be small, non-aggressive, and compatible with acidic soft water — small rasboras, pencilfish, and Corydoras are frequently cited companions for forest-stream bettas. The species' relative rarity and Data Deficient conservation status make captive propagation by responsible hobbyists a worthwhile contribution to the long-term security of this enigmatic fish.
Conservation
Betta pallifina is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 28 December 2018. The DD designation does not indicate security; it reflects the limited biological survey effort in the upper Barito drainage rather than a reassurance about population size or stability. The remote, densely forested interior of Central Kalimantan has been among the least-visited regions for freshwater biodiversity surveys, and the true extent of the species' distribution and abundance within the Barito system is unknown.
Kalimantan as a whole faces severe and ongoing pressure from logging, oil palm expansion, and associated watershed degradation — threats that affect headwater stream systems through sedimentation, altered hydrology, and chemical run-off. Whether B. pallifina populations have declined as a result of these pressures cannot be established from available data, which is precisely why the Data Deficient assessment reflects genuine uncertainty rather than good news. Targeted surveys of the upper Barito tributaries and systematic assessment of population status would be required before a better-informed listing could be made. In the meantime, hobbyist maintenance of captive-bred populations provides an informal insurance against the worst-case outcomes for this poorly known species.
