Taxonomy & naming
Betta pardalotos was described by ichthyologist Heok Hee Tan in 2009, in a paper published in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology (volume 57, issue 2, pages 501–504). The type locality is Sumatra, Indonesia, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Betta pardalotos Tan, 2009. Because the species was described in the genus Betta, where it remains today, no parenthetical authority is used.
The species falls within the waseri species group, a cluster of large, mouthbrooding bettas from lowland Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. The waseri group is characterised by paternal oral incubation, relatively large adult size compared to other wild betta groups, and preference for still or sluggish blackwater habitats. Within the group, B. pardalotos is most readily distinguished by its throat markings: two conspicuous white rounded patches on a black background, a feature noted as unique among the group members at the time of description.
The specific epithet pardalotos derives from the Greek pardalotos, meaning 'spotted like a leopard' or 'spotted,' in reference to the distinctive spotted or patched throat pattern that sets this species apart from its congeners.
Morphology
Betta pardalotos is a relatively large wild betta, reaching approximately 3 in standard length (SL), with specimens reported up to 3–3.5 in in total length. This places it at the larger end of the genus, consistent with other waseri-group members. The body form is elongate and moderately compressed, as is typical of the larger mouthbrooding bettas, with fin rays and scalation suited to a benthic or benthopelagic lifestyle in slow water.
The most diagnostic external character is the throat pattern: two rounded, white or pale patches set against a black background on the gular region. This coloration distinguishes B. pardalotos from the other waseri-group species, which share the group's general build but differ in the arrangement and coloration of these markings. The remainder of the coloration follows the broad pattern of the group — the body is brownish to olive, often with iridescent scales and reddish or bluish fin margins — though detailed colour notes from living specimens are limited in the literature.
Habitat
Betta pardalotos is endemic to the lower Musi River basin of South Sumatra, Indonesia. Its recorded habitat consists of freshwater channels and associated still or sluggish waterways draining into the lower portion of the Musi system. The broader Musi basin drains a large tract of lowland Sumatra and empties into the Bangka Strait near Palembang; the lower reaches include extensive peat-swamp forest systems characteristic of Sumatran lowlands.
The species inhabits blackwater: soft, highly acidic water stained dark brown by tannins and humic acids leaching from decomposing peat and leaf litter. Recorded pH is approximately 4, placing it firmly in the acidic blackwater category. Temperatures are tropical, around 72 °F or somewhat higher in the lowland channels. Dissolved oxygen is low in such systems, which is why labyrinth fishes — which breathe atmospheric air via the suprabranchial organ — have a strong ecological advantage here: B. pardalotos, like all bettas, must access the water surface regularly to breathe.
The habitat is threatened by land-use change across lowland Sumatra. Peat-swamp forests have been heavily converted for oil palm and pulpwood plantations and are subject to drainage, burning, and hydrological alteration, all of which degrade or destroy the acidic, low-oxygen, tannin-rich conditions this species depends on.
Feeding
Betta pardalotos is a carnivore, as are all members of the genus. In the wild it feeds on insects and small invertebrates encountered at or near the water surface and within the water column — consistent with the feeding ecology documented across the waseri group and larger wild bettas generally.
In captivity it readily accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods including Daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia), and bloodworm (Chironomid larvae). High-quality meaty foods maintain the fish in good condition and are important for bringing breeding pairs into optimal reproductive state. As with other wild bettas, a diet relying predominantly on live or frozen invertebrates is preferable to one based on dry prepared foods alone, though acclimatised captive fish will often take quality pellets.
Mating
Betta pardalotos is a paternal mouthbrooder. Courtship follows the pattern documented across the waseri species group: the male courts the female with lateral displays and fin-spreading, and when a receptive female responds, the pair engage in a nuptial embrace. The male curves his body around the female in a clamping embrace, and fertilisation occurs as eggs and sperm are released simultaneously.
After the embrace, the fertilised eggs — which sink or are briefly free in the water — are collected, typically by the male. The male then takes the clutch into his buccal cavity, where the eggs and subsequently the newly hatched larvae are held during incubation. Mouthbrooding replaces the bubble-nest construction seen in other betta groups: the male builds no nest and relies entirely on oral incubation to protect the developing brood.
Breeding
Once the male of Betta pardalotos takes the eggs into his mouth, he enters a period of incubation lasting roughly one to two and a half weeks depending on temperature, during which he eats little or nothing. The fry develop within the buccal cavity, first as embryos and then as free-swimming larvae that continue to be held and protected by the male even after hatching. The male releases the fry once they are sufficiently developed to fend for themselves — this is the defining difference between mouthbrooding species and bubble-nesters: no nest is built, and the male's body is the incubation vessel.
In aquarium conditions, breeders typically condition the pair on a protein-rich diet before spawning and provide a quiet, well-planted space with softened, acidic water matching the species' blackwater origins. The male should not be disturbed during the holding period, as stress can cause him to abandon or swallow the brood. Fry are released at a relatively advanced stage compared to egg-scattering species and can generally take newly hatched brine shrimp as a first food. Clutch sizes for waseri-group mouthbrooders are smaller than those of egg-scattering bettas, as larger, better-developed fry require more investment per individual.
In the aquarium
Betta pardalotos is not a common aquarium fish. Its critically endangered status, highly restricted range, and blackwater specialisation make it a species for dedicated wild-betta keepers rather than general aquarists. Where it is kept, the overriding requirement is accurate water chemistry: very soft, highly acidic water (pH around 4, or at least well below 6) with extremely low conductivity, replicating the peat-swamp blackwater of South Sumatra. Reverse-osmosis water acidified with botanicals — dried leaves, peat filtration — is the standard approach among specialists.
Temperature should be maintained in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius. Because the species breathes atmospheric air via the labyrinth organ, the surface must remain accessible, the air above the water surface should be warm and humid (a tight-fitting lid prevents cold draughts), and filtration should be gentle: slow-moving or still water is essential. A heavily planted species-only or carefully chosen community tank — small, non-aggressive, water-chemistry-compatible tankmates only — is appropriate; larger or more aggressive bettas will stress or injure this species.
Given the species' conservation status, sourcing only captive-bred stock is strongly advised. Any captive population represents genuine conservation value for a fish whose wild habitat continues to contract.
Conservation
Betta pardalotos is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 12 January 2019 under criterion B2ab(iii). The CR listing reflects both the species' extremely restricted natural range — confined to channels of the lower Musi River basin in South Sumatra — and the severe and ongoing decline of lowland peat-swamp forest across Sumatra.
Sumatra has experienced some of the highest rates of tropical deforestation globally, with peat-swamp ecosystems particularly targeted for conversion to oil palm and pulpwood plantations. Drainage of peat swamps alters hydrology, raises pH, increases sedimentation, and destroys the tannin-rich, oxygen-poor blackwater conditions on which B. pardalotos depends. Fire — used in land clearance and burning during drought years — can eliminate peat-swamp habitat across large areas with little prospect of recovery on ecologically meaningful timescales.
As a fish with no known populations outside the lower Musi basin and a highly specialised habitat requirement, B. pardalotos has virtually no buffer against further habitat loss. Collection for the ornamental fish trade has been noted as an additional pressure. Captive maintenance by specialist wild-betta keepers represents a small but real ex-situ safety net for the species, and responsible hobbyists who keep and breed this fish contribute to that network.
