One of the smallest members of the genus, Betta persephone is a darkly pigmented, jewel-like fish from the blackwater peat swamps of southern Peninsular Malaysia. Males reach barely 1.5 in in length yet display intense iridescent blue-green or turquoise scales against near-black ground colouring — a combination so evocative of shadow and hidden brilliance that the describer named the species after Persephone, Queen of the Underworld. Its range barely extends beyond the type locality of Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve in Johor, and the rapid conversion of lowland peat swamp forest to oil palm plantation has left wild populations clinging to ever-smaller pockets of intact habitat. The IUCN assessed it as Endangered in 2018.

Taxonomy & naming

Betta persephone was described by Schaller in 1986. It belongs to the coccina group, a radiation of small, darkly pigmented, peat-swamp bettas from Sundaland that also includes B. coccina, B. livida, B. miniopinna, and B. rutilans, among others. Members of this group share a slender body form, subdued to deeply dark base colouring, and close ecological ties to acidic, tannin-stained blackwater. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) lists the valid name as Betta persephone Schaller, 1986.

The specific epithet is drawn from Greek mythology: Persephone is the daughter of Demeter and queen of the underworld in her role as Hades's consort. The allusion is to the species' exceptionally dark colouration — a fish of shadowy, tea-coloured swamp water that seems to carry the darkness of its habitat on its body. The coccina-group bettas have historically been challenging to delineate, and distribution boundaries between some species remain incompletely resolved; B. persephone is the southernmost and smallest member of the group, restricted to a small area of Johor state in Peninsular Malaysia.

Morphology

Betta persephone is among the smallest wild bettas known, with FishBase reporting males as small as 1 in standard length; maximum recorded size reaches around 1.5 in. The body is slender and elongate in the style of the coccina group, with moderately pointed fins and the rounded caudal fin typical of non-ornamental wild bettas.

Colouration is the defining feature. The ground colour of mature males is very dark brownish-black, overlaid with iridescent blue-green or turquoise scales that flash in reflected light — the scales are individually small but densely arranged, giving a shimmering, oil-on-water quality. The gill covers carry iridescent patches. Fin colouration follows a similar dark base with iridescent edging. Females are less intensely pigmented, with a plainer brownish body, though the dark base colouration of the coccina group means even females are noticeably dark compared to most other small bettas. The species is often described as visually understated in poor light but striking when illuminated directly over the dark water of a well-planted aquarium.

Habitat

Betta persephone is a stenotopic peat swamp specialist. Its type locality is Ayer Hitam (also spelled Ayer Hitam) in Johor, Peninsular Malaysia, in the Ayer Hitam Peat Swamp Forest Reserve — a coastal lowland peat dome system. The species is documented from primary peat swamp forest habitat and has not been confirmed to persist in degraded, secondary, or converted areas.

Peat swamp water is among the most chemically extreme freshwater habitat in the tropics. The water at collection sites for B. persephone is very soft and strongly acidic, with pH around 4.0 recorded in natural habitat (Seriously Fish), extremely low conductivity, and high dissolved organic content from the decomposition of sphagnum and forest litter. Colour ranges from amber to dark brown. Temperature in the low- to mid-20s Celsius (reported range 73–82 °F, typically around 77 °F). These conditions reflect a forest canopy environment that shades the water surface while leaf litter steadily acidifies the substrate. As a member of the family Osphronemidae, B. persephone possesses the labyrinth organ — a suprabranchial air-breathing structure that allows it to exploit the oxygen-depleted conditions that develop in stagnant swamp water.

Feeding

In nature, Betta persephone feeds on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — the typical diet of wild bettas living at or near the water surface of a forest swamp. Prey items include small insects, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and similar invertebrates that fall onto or develop within the water.

In the aquarium the species accepts small live and frozen foods readily: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii or adults, micro-worms, and small bloodworm are all reported to be taken. Prepared micro-pellets designed for small carnivores can be accepted, but live and frozen foods are preferred for conditioning and colour. Given its diminutive size, prey items must be appropriately scaled; the fish's small gape limits the size of food it can take, and overfeeding any single item is best avoided to maintain water quality in the soft, buffering-free water it requires.

Mating

Betta persephone is a bubble-nester. Males in breeding condition construct a raft of mucus-bound air bubbles, typically sited at the water surface under a floating leaf, a piece of driftwood, or other surface cover. The nest may also be built inside a submerged tube, narrow canister, or the entrance to a cave-like structure — the coccina group often favours semi-enclosed sites rather than the fully open surface nests of B. splendens.

Courting males display to females with spread fins and intensified colour, circling and posturing. Receptive females approach the nest site, and the pair engages in a series of embraces below or beside the nest. Spawning occurs in a typical anabantoid embrace in which the male wraps his body around the female, fertilising eggs as they are expelled. The fertilised eggs are buoyant or neutrally buoyant and are collected and placed into the bubble nest by the male.

Breeding

After spawning, both adults have been reported to participate in brood care, which is unusual among bubble-nesting bettas — in most species the male alone tends the nest while the female is driven off. In B. persephone, the female is reportedly tolerated at or near the nest and may assist in retrieving fallen eggs or fry, though the male remains the primary nest-guardian. This cooperative element may reflect the species' small territory size and close-quarters lifestyle in dense peat swamp vegetation.

The male guards the bubble nest, retrieving and replacing eggs or fry that fall, and fans the nest to maintain oxygenation. Fry become free-swimming a few days after hatching, at which point the labyrinth organ is not yet functional and the fry are reliant on gill respiration. Cover for the female — in the form of dense planting or partition — is essential to prevent the male from harassing her during the guarding phase. First foods for the very small fry must be tiny: infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food. The fry are reportedly not consumed by either parent, which is consistent with hobbyist accounts that describe both adults as tolerant around the brood.

In the aquarium

Betta persephone is an uncommon but desirable species in specialist circles, valued for its dark colouration and its biology as a peat-swamp endemic. It demands water chemistry that closely mirrors its natural habitat: very soft (near-zero hardness), strongly acidic water with pH ideally around 4.0–5.0, and temperature in the 73–81 °F range. Achieving and maintaining these conditions requires reverse osmosis water, peat filtration, or a heavy use of botanicals (leaf litter, seed pods), and an aquarist who is comfortable working in a parameter range far outside the typical tropical-community norm.

A species tank or a carefully selected community of similarly acid-adapted small fishes is the appropriate setting. Filtration must be gentle — the fish inhabits nearly still water and cannot tolerate strong currents, and the species' small size makes it vulnerable to being sucked against a power filter intake. The labyrinth organ requires free access to humid surface air; covering the tank is important, but the air gap above the water must be warm to avoid chilling the organ. Surface cover in the form of floating plants or leaves helps trigger breeding behaviour and makes the fish feel secure. Because of its extreme water requirements, very small size, and conservation status, B. persephone is best kept by experienced hobbyists who can meet its needs consistently.

Conservation

Betta persephone is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, criteria B1ab(iii), assessed 28 December 2018. The primary threat is habitat loss: lowland peat swamp forest in Peninsular Malaysia has been converted to oil palm plantations at a very high rate, and the narrow coastal peat domes that once supported the species are largely gone. The Ayer Hitam Peat Swamp Forest Reserve in Johor, which contains the type locality, has been studied specifically in the context of B. persephone population status and represents one of the last confirmed strongholds for the species.

The species' extreme habitat specialisation leaves it little capacity to adapt to disturbed or converted land. It cannot persist in the drainage ditches, monoculture-flanked canals, or secondary scrub that replace felled peat forest. A study coinciding with the 2018 IUCN assessment documented B. persephone within the AHPSFR and confirmed the ongoing pressure from adjacent land conversion. In the aquarium hobby, the species is occasionally bred, but captive populations are small and unevenly distributed; dedicated breeding by specialist hobbyists and betta societies is worthwhile from a conservation standpoint, as it maintains a refuge stock and reduces any incentive to collect wild specimens from an already depleted population.
