Taxonomy & naming
Betta pulchra was described by Heok Hee Tan and Peter K. L. Ng Tan in 1996, based on material from the Pontian district of Johor in southwestern Peninsular Malaysia. The species epithet pulchra is the Latin adjective for 'beautiful' or 'pretty', applied in reference to the fish's attractive coloration. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Betta pulchra Tan & Tan, 1996 as the valid name.
The species belongs to the pugnax group, a cluster of medium-sized, mouthbrooding wild bettas distributed across the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. Other members of this group include the nominate species B. pugnax (Cantor, 1849) of Penang and northwestern Peninsular Malaysia, as well as B. fusca, B. enisae, and several subsequently described allies from Borneo and Sumatra. The pugnax group is united by paternal mouthbrooding, an elongate body form, and subdued but iridescent coloration compared with the ornamental betta trade's domesticated strains. B. pulchra is morphologically similar to B. pugnax but differs in coloration and has a more restricted, southerly distribution. The genus Betta belongs to the family Osphronemidae and shares with all anabantoids the labyrinth organ — a suprabranchial accessory breathing structure that permits direct aerial respiration.
Morphology
Betta pulchra is a small, elongate betta reaching approximately 2 in standard length (SL); FishBase records a maximum of 2 in SL, and the IBC notes a maximum of around 2 in SL for measured specimens, with Seriously Fish giving up to 2.5 in total length. It is a slender, laterally compressed fish with rounded fins and a spade-shaped to slightly pointed caudal fin, built for manoeuvrability in densely vegetated, shallow swamp habitats rather than for display.
Coloration is more attractive than the species' modest size might suggest. The base body colour is brownish-green to olive with faint horizontal striping on the flanks and a metallic blue-green to turquoise iridescence on the gill covers and anterior body that intensifies during courtship and territorial encounters. The unpaired fins carry variable reddish or brownish pigmentation, and some individuals show more vivid fin coloration. As in other pugnax-group bettas, males are generally more intensely coloured and develop slightly more pointed finnage; females are plainer with a rounder ventral profile when gravid.
Habitat
Betta pulchra is known from the Pontian district of Johor in southwestern Peninsular Malaysia, making it one of the most range-restricted members of the pugnax group. Its core habitats are blackwater peat-swamp forest remnants and the heavily overgrown bank vegetation of irrigation canals that thread through former swamp areas now converted to agriculture. These sites share the characteristics of blackwater environments: dark, tannin-stained water, heavy shading from riparian and emergent vegetation, very soft substrate, and almost no flow.
Water chemistry across recorded sites is strongly acidic and exceptionally soft. Seriously Fish reports pH 3.5–6.5 and hardness 0–90 ppm; FishBase records pH around 4.1 and temperature approximately 82 °F at survey sites, consistent with the typical Johor peat-swamp profile. The Seriously Fish care page gives a temperature range of 72–81 °F for the species. As a labyrinth fish, B. pulchra can breathe atmospheric air directly, an adaptation that permits it to survive in the warm, oxygen-depleted water typical of stagnant peat pools — but it remains dependent on intact swamp structure for its microhabitat requirements. Much of this landscape in Johor has been drained and converted, fragmenting remaining populations into small, isolated patches.
Feeding
In the wild, Betta pulchra is a carnivore of small invertebrates, targeting the aquatic insects, chironomid larvae, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates characteristic of leaf-litter peat-swamp habitats. The species' small size and its preference for heavily vegetated, shallow microhabitats make it well suited to hunting among roots and submerged debris.
In the aquarium it accepts a range of small live and frozen foods without much difficulty. Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and small invertebrates are all taken readily. Seriously Fish notes that the species will accept dried foods but shows a clear preference for live and frozen items. Given its small adult size, food particle size matters: large bloodworm pieces or adult Artemia may be taken, but smaller zooplankton and micro-invertebrates more closely replicate the natural diet and elicit a stronger feeding response. As with most wild bettas, a varied diet with a substantial live or frozen component maintains colour and breeding condition better than a dry-food-only regime.
Mating
Betta pulchra is a paternal mouthbrooder, like all pugnax-group bettas. Spawning is initiated by the female, who approaches the male and stimulates him to display; the IBC notes that females initiate courtship in this species. The male responds by spreading his fins and intensifying his iridescent coloration, circling and displaying to the female before the pair moves into the spawning embrace.
Spawning follows the characteristic Betta embrace: the male wraps his body around the female in a tight 'S' curve and both fish briefly suspend motility as eggs and sperm are simultaneously released. The fertilised eggs fall and are gathered — primarily by the male — into his buccal cavity before the sequence repeats. Several embraces may be needed to complete a spawning. Once the female is spent, the male takes sole charge of the brood; the female should be removed or given ample space to avoid continued male aggression.
Breeding
After the spawning sequence concludes, the male holds the fertilised eggs in his buccal cavity for the entire incubation period without feeding. The IBC reports an incubation period of 12–18 days, averaging approximately 14 days, during which the male gently tumbles the developing eggs with his mouth movements to oxygenate and clean the brood. He typically retreats to a quiet area of the tank and becomes more reclusive during this period.
At the end of incubation the male releases free-swimming fry that have absorbed most of their yolk sac. At this size the fry can take the smallest live foods: newly hatched Artemia nauplii (brine shrimp), micro-worms, and infusoria are appropriate first foods. The male takes no further parental role after releasing the fry, and both adults and fry should be monitored to prevent predation. Growth is steady at warm temperatures, and the fry begin to show sex-linked colour differences — males developing more iridescence — within the first few months.
In the aquarium
Betta pulchra is a species for the specialist rather than the general community aquarist. Seriously Fish considers it not suitable for community tanks, and its specific water chemistry requirements — strongly acidic, very soft blackwater conditions — make it poorly matched with most standard community species. It is best kept as a pair or in a species-only setup in a small, well-structured aquarium with dense planting, driftwood, leaf litter, and minimal flow. A gentle sponge filter is the appropriate filtration method; surface agitation should be kept low, and floating plants help diffuse light and maintain the dark, sheltered atmosphere the species prefers.
Water chemistry is non-negotiable: pH in the range of 4.0–6.5, very soft water (hardness under 5 °dH is ideal), and temperature 72–81 °F. Peat filtration, Indian almond (Terminalia catappa) leaves, or other tannin sources help maintain the acidic, blackwater conditions and release humic acids that appear to benefit the fish's immune system and willingness to breed. As a labyrinth fish it must have unobstructed access to the water surface to breathe air; a tight-fitting lid prevents both the fish escaping and cold drafts over the surface that can cause respiratory infections. Males are territorial and should not be kept together in a small space; a single male with one or two females in a well-planted tank of 17.5–23.5 in allows natural behaviour without excessive aggression.
Conservation
Betta pulchra is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, a category that reflects insufficient information to make a direct assessment of extinction risk rather than confirmed low risk. FishBase cites the DD assessment, and the species' extremely restricted known range — centred on the Pontian district of Johor — means that even sparse survey data is difficult to interpret confidently.
The habitat picture, however, is not ambiguous: the peat-swamp forests of southwestern Johor have been one of the most heavily converted landscapes in Peninsular Malaysia, with drainage, burning, and clearing for oil palm and rubber having removed or degraded a large proportion of former swamp extent over recent decades. Irrigation canals threading through plantation land can provide secondary habitat, but these are subject to pesticide and fertiliser runoff and periodic maintenance disturbance. The species is also collected for the ornamental trade in small numbers by wild-betta enthusiasts, though captive breeding among specialist hobbyists — for whom it is a prized rarity — reduces pressure on wild populations. Given its restricted range and the ongoing loss and degradation of peat-swamp habitat, B. pulchra is almost certainly more threatened than its Data Deficient status implies; systematic survey work in Johor is needed to establish whether viable populations persist across its historical range.
