Taxonomy & naming
Betta raja was described by Tan Heok Hui and Peter Ng Kee Lin in 2005, in their comprehensive revision of the labyrinth fishes of Sumatra published in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology (Supplement 13: 115–138). The type locality is Sungai Ayer Merah, a feeder stream to Danau Souak Padang, approximately fifteen minutes by boat upstream, at coordinates 1°36'45.7"S, 103°27'00.0"E, in Jambi province, Sumatra, Indonesia. The holotype is deposited at the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense (MZB 9315).
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes accepts the name as Betta raja Tan & Ng, 2005. The species belongs to the pugnax complex — a cluster of medium-sized Sumatran and Peninsular Malaysian mouthbrooders that share a broadly similar stocky body form, caudal spike, and brown base colouration with green or blue iridescent spotting. B. raja is distinguished from close relatives by a combination of meristic and morphometric characters, including anal fin ray counts of 25–28 and lateral scale counts of 30–32, along with a relatively large head (33.9–37.4% of standard length). The species name raja is the Malay word for 'king' or 'chief', a nod to the fish's relatively imposing build within the complex.
Morphology
Betta raja reaches a maximum of approximately 2.5–3 in standard length, with FishBase recording up to 2.5 in SL for males. It is a moderately robust fish for a wild betta — broader across the head than many slender forest-stream species — with males showing a noticeably wider head than females, a key character in the field. Both sexes are brown with a series of iridescent green and blue spots or scales scattered across the flanks and head, producing a shimmering metallic sheen under good lighting.
The fins are moderately extended, with males typically showing longer pelvic fins than females. The caudal fin bears the characteristic spike (elongated central rays) seen across the pugnax complex. Anal fin rays number 25–28, most commonly 26. The lateral line scales number 30–32, mode 31. Females are smaller, narrower-headed, and generally less iridescent, making sexing straightforward in adult fish.
Habitat
Betta raja inhabits lowland forest swamps, blackwater streams, and peat-swamp drainage channels across parts of Sumatra, Indonesia. The type locality lies in Jambi province, and the species is also documented from the Indragiri River basin in Riau province, northern Sumatra Selatan, and Sumatra Barat — a range centred on the peat-swamp lowlands of central Sumatra.
The waters it occupies are characteristically clear to dark tea-brown, stained by tannins leaching from decomposing vegetation and peat. Recorded water parameters span pH 4.0–7.0 in natural habitats, and temperatures fall in the range of 72–81 °F. These are shallow, slow-moving to still environments with dense overhanging vegetation, submerged root masses, and leaf litter accumulations on soft substrate — conditions that generate high concentrations of dissolved organic matter but low oxygen, which the fish offsets with its suprabranchial labyrinth organ, allowing it to breathe atmospheric air directly from the surface.
As a labyrinth fish, B. raja depends on access to the air surface; in nature this is never limiting, but in the aquarium it is an architectural necessity. The still, tannin-rich forest-swamp environment also means the species is adapted to very low water movement and limited light penetration.
Feeding
In the wild, Betta raja feeds primarily on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small terrestrial insects that fall to the surface, tiny crustaceans, and similar invertebrate prey gleaned from the water column and surface film of its forest-swamp habitat. Like most wild bettas it is a visually oriented predator that targets moving prey.
In captivity it adapts readily to live and frozen foods: Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp), bloodworm, and small insects such as fruit flies are all accepted and provide the nutritional variety needed to keep the fish in good condition and reproductive readiness. Small, high-quality pellets or granules may be accepted by acclimated individuals, but the diet should not rely on dry food alone. Feeding once or twice daily in modest quantities suits the species well.
Mating
Betta raja is a paternal mouthbrooder. Courtship follows a pattern typical of the pugnax complex: the male displays to the female with flared fins and broadside posturing, showing off his iridescent scaling and extended pelvic fins. Receptive females respond with head-down submission postures, and the pair moves toward a shallow, sheltered area of the tank — ideally beneath a leaf or cave — to spawn.
Mating involves a classic anabantoid embrace: the male wraps his body around the female, and in a brief period of quiescence the eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The pair may embrace multiple times in a single spawning session. After each embrace the fertilised eggs — which sink or fall slowly through the water — are gathered. The male collects the eggs into his buccal cavity and incubates them there, eating nothing for the full brooding period.
Breeding
Following spawning, the male holds the fertilised eggs in his mouth and incubates them for approximately 9–18 days, with most sources recording 12–16 days at typical temperatures in the 75–79 °F range; warmer water shortens incubation, cooler water extends it. During this period the male takes no food and generally retreats to a sheltered area of the tank, becoming less active and somewhat secretive.
At the end of the brooding period the male releases free-swimming fry, which are capable of feeding immediately. Fry are relatively large for labyrinth-fish offspring, and newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) and micro-worms are suitable first foods. The male should be removed or allowed to retreat after release, as some males may attempt to recollect stressed fry. The female may also be removed after spawning to prevent harassment of the brooding male. Conditioning both fish on live and frozen foods before breeding attempts significantly improves spawning success.
In the aquarium
Betta raja is considered a rewarding but specialist fish, best suited to aquarists who can provide soft, acidic water and a quiet, well-planted environment. A species tank or a carefully chosen community is strongly preferred: males are territorial toward conspecifics and may also be aggressive toward similarly shaped fish. A single pair or a harem of one male with two females, in a tank of around 23.5–31.5 in, provides adequate space.
Water chemistry should reflect the species' blackwater origins where possible — soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 5.5–7.0, hardness below 150 ppm) with temperatures between 22 and 81 °F. That said, the species is described as relatively tolerant of water chemistry compared to some extreme peat-swamp bettas, and captive-bred stock has been spawned at 20 dH — suggesting adaptability once established. Filtration should be gentle; strong currents are inappropriate for a swamp-adapted labyrinth fish, and the surface must remain accessible for air-breathing. Tannin additions (Indian almond leaves, peat filtration) are beneficial for both colour and fish comfort.
The aquarium should offer dense planting, surface cover (floating plants or broad leaves), and dim lighting with shaded areas. Males should not be housed together. The species will often accept a range of tank-bred foods once settled, but live and frozen invertebrates remain the best diet for long-term health and breeding readiness.
Conservation
Betta raja is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 05 January 2019. The assessment notes that the species' habitat — lowland swamp forests of Sumatra — remains relatively widespread and that collection for the commercial aquarium trade does not currently represent a significant threat to wild populations.
Nevertheless, the broader context for Sumatran blackwater and peat-swamp habitat is one of ongoing decline. Large-scale peat-swamp drainage, conversion to agricultural land (particularly oil palm and acacia plantations), logging, and fire affect lowland forest across Sumatra at rates among the highest in Southeast Asia. While B. raja itself is not immediately threatened, many of the ecosystems it depends on are under severe pressure, and continued monitoring of wild populations is warranted. Aquarists can support the species by sourcing captive-bred specimens from established breeders rather than wild-caught imports.
