Taxonomy & naming
Betta renata was described by Heok Hee Tan in 1998 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters, volume 8, number 3 (pages 281–287). The type locality is Rantau Panjang, Jambi province, Sumatra, Indonesia, at approximately 1°21′57.6″S, 103°54′55.2″E. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — the governing authority for valid names — records the species as Betta renata Tan, 1998, and it has remained a valid, undisputed name since its description.
The species belongs to the waseri group, one of the larger species assemblages within Betta, which collectively comprise large-bodied, paternal mouthbrooders distributed across Sundaland. Within the group, B. renata is most readily separated from its congeners by the characteristic kidney-shaped dark marking on the throat of breeding males — a feature so diagnostic that Tan built the species name around it. Other waseri-group members have differently shaped or less prominent throat marks, and the kidney form serves as a quick field identification character where ranges overlap.
Morphology
Betta renata is one of the larger species in the genus, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 3.5 in (3.5 in), with some individuals documented to 3.5 in SL. The body form is typical of the waseri group: elongate and somewhat laterally compressed, with large finnage in dominant males and a relatively robust head housing the labyrinth organ.
The most diagnostic external character is the kidney-shaped dark marking on the opercular and inter-opercular region — the 'throat mark' from which the species takes its name. Colouration across the body is less flamboyant than in some hobbyist-favourite bettas; like many peat-swamp endemics, B. renata tends toward iridescent greens and blues on the flanks with reddish highlights in the fins of breeding males, though the intensity of colour is highly dependent on lighting, mood, and condition. Females are typically smaller and less vividly marked, with reduced finnage.
Habitat
Betta renata is restricted to peat-swamp forest and associated blackwater streams across Jambi, South Sumatra, and Riau provinces of Sumatra, Indonesia. Its habitat is among the most chemically extreme of any freshwater environment: flooded peat substrates heavily laden with decaying plant debris, submerged logs, and leaf litter generate humic and fulvic acids that drive pH values to extraordinary lows. Field records from type-locality sites document pH as low as 3.0, with a representative measurement of 4.1 from Rantau Panjang; conductivity is negligible, with total dissolved solids often below 90 ppm — essentially distilled water with acid.
Water temperatures in Sumatran lowland peat swamps typically range from approximately 73–81 °F, varying with season and whether sites are shaded by intact forest canopy. The dark, tannin-stained water absorbs light rapidly, keeping illumination dim even at shallow depths. Being a labyrinth fish, B. renata can extract oxygen directly from the atmosphere via its suprabranchial organ, which is an important adaptation for water that is often critically hypoxic. The species is found in areas of minimal water movement — still backwaters, flooded forest floor, pools within the swamp — rather than open streams with current.
Feeding
Like other members of the genus, Betta renata is a carnivore, subsisting in the wild on small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface, small crustaceans, and zooplankton. The peat-swamp environment, though chemically harsh, supports invertebrate communities that sustain populations of insectivorous fishes. The slow, largely stationary hunting behaviour typical of wild bettas — opportunistic ambush from cover rather than active pursuit — suits the low-light, heavily structured environment of flooded peat forest.
In captivity the species accepts a range of live and frozen foods including Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), and small insects. Prepared foods may be accepted by well-conditioned individuals but live and frozen prey items are preferred and produce the best colour and breeding condition. Given its extreme habitat origins, overfeeding is to be avoided.
Mating
Betta renata is a paternal mouthbrooder — after courtship and an embrace between the pair, fertilised eggs are taken up by the male into his buccal cavity, where he incubates them without feeding for the duration. This reproductive strategy is shared across the waseri group and contrasts with the bubble-nesting mode of more familiar domesticated bettas such as B. splendens.
Courtship involves display behaviour in which the male flares his gill covers and fins and shows the kidney-shaped throat mark prominently, likely functioning as a species-recognition signal to females within the group. The embrace itself — a nuptial clasp in which the male wraps his body around the female — triggers egg and sperm release simultaneously. The female may assist in collecting fallen eggs before the male scoops them up. Once the male has the clutch secured in his mouth, the pair separate and the female takes no further role in care. In a community setting or captive pair, the male should ideally be left undisturbed during the incubation period; excessive stress can cause him to swallow or spit out the brood prematurely.
Breeding
After the spawning embrace, the male holds the fertilised eggs in his buccal cavity for approximately 17 to 20 days, eating nothing throughout incubation. The exact duration falls toward the longer end of the mouthbrooding range within the genus and appears to be relatively consistent across reported captive spawnings. During this period the male's throat visibly distends, and he adopts a characteristically head-down resting posture.
At release the fry are already well-developed — past the yolk-sac stage — and immediately free-swimming, a significant advantage of mouthbrooding over the egg-scattering or bubble-nesting strategy. First foods for newly released fry include infusoria, micro-worms, and newly hatched Artemia nauplii; the fry are small enough at release to require appropriately sized prey. Breeders recommend keeping pairs in a species tank of at least 20–25 US gal with soft, highly acidic water matching the field chemistry as closely as practical, and leaving the brooding male undisturbed. Removing the female after spawning reduces stress on the incubating male.
In the aquarium
Betta renata is an intermediate-level species that rewards aquarists who can replicate its extreme blackwater chemistry. A dedicated species tank is strongly recommended: the combination of very soft, very acidic water (pH 4.0–6.0, conductivity near zero) that the fish requires is incompatible with most community setups, and males of this size can be aggressive toward other bettas and similarly shaped fish. A well-filtered aquarium of 20 US gal or more with a tight-fitting lid — essential, as all labyrinth fish must access warm, humid air above the water surface — provides a workable minimum.
Decor should mimic the peat-swamp environment: a dark substrate, heavy planting or leaf litter (dried Indian almond or oak leaves lower pH and tannin the water naturally), and low or filtered lighting. Gentle filtration that avoids turbulence is important; the species is adapted to near-still water. Water temperature in the 75–81 °F range is appropriate. The labyrinth organ requires that the air gap between the water surface and the tank lid be warm and humid; a cold draught across the surface can cause respiratory damage. Once acclimated and water conditions are stable, B. renata is a rewarding display fish whose mouthbrooding behaviour is observable if the tank is not disturbed during incubation.
Conservation
Betta renata is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List. The assessment reflects both the species' restricted geographic range — confined to peat-swamp habitats of three Sumatran provinces — and the rapid pace of peat-swamp destruction across its range. Sumatran lowland peat-swamp forest is one of the most threatened ecosystems on earth, subject to large-scale drainage, burning, and conversion to palm-oil plantation and timber plantation at rates that have drastically reduced the total area of intact swamp within living memory.
Because B. renata is physiologically specialised for the extreme chemistry of intact peat swamps, it cannot persist in degraded or converted habitats where water pH rises and sediment loads increase. Local collection for the aquarium trade adds a secondary pressure, though this is smaller in magnitude than habitat loss. The species is occasionally maintained and bred in captivity by specialist keepers of wild bettas, which offers some insurance against extinction; however, the long-term security of the species depends on the survival of significant areas of Sumatran peat-swamp forest, which remains deeply uncertain.
