Betta rutilans is a small, intensely coloured wild betta of the coccina group — the wine-red bettas — native to blackwater peat swamps and stagnant ditches of Borneo and Sumatra. Reaching barely 1.5 in, it inhabits some of the most chemically extreme freshwater in the world: dark, tannin-stained water with a pH often below 4, negligible hardness, and near-zero mineral content. Assessed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, it faces relentless habitat loss as peat-swamp forests across the Sunda shelf are drained and burned. In the aquarium it rewards the specialist who can match its exacting water chemistry with a glowing, quietly charismatic fish that few visitors can identify on sight.

Taxonomy & naming

Betta rutilans was described by Witte and Kottelat in 1991, based on material from Borneo. The species belongs to the coccina group, a clade of small, brilliantly coloured bettas sometimes called the wine-red or claret bettas, which share a distinctive vertebral count — nine abdominal vertebrae, compared with ten or eleven in most other Betta — and a general pattern of deep red, maroon, or wine-coloured body pigmentation overlaid with iridescent blue-green scales. The coccina group currently encompasses around ten species distributed across the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Betta rutilans Witte & Kottelat, 1991. The specific epithet rutilans is Latin for 'glowing red' or 'reddening', a straightforward reference to the fish's characteristic body colour. Within the coccina group, B. rutilans is most readily confused with the nominate Betta coccina and with B. tussyae; separation requires close attention to iridescent scale pattern, fin markings, and collection locality. Hobbyist literature has at various times circulated rumours of mouthbrooding tendencies in B. rutilans, but the species is treated as a bubble-nester consistent with the broader coccina group.

Morphology

Betta rutilans is a diminutive fish, reaching a maximum of about 1.5 in total length — placing it among the smaller members of even the coccina group. The body is slender and slightly laterally compressed, with pointed unpaired fins and the small upturned mouth characteristic of a surface-oriented insectivore. As in all Betta, the suprabranchial chamber above the gills functions as an accessory air-breathing organ, allowing the fish to survive in water with very low dissolved oxygen.

Adult males carry the species' namesake coloration: a deep wine-red to brick-red base suffused with a variable blue-green iridescence from metallic scales arranged across the flank. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins often show iridescent blue-green edging against a red or dark ground. Females are plainer — paler, less iridescent, and with a more rounded belly. Juveniles of both sexes resemble faded adult females and take several months to develop full coloration. The intensity of the male's display colours fluctuates considerably with mood, water conditions, and the presence of rivals.

Habitat

Betta rutilans inhabits blackwater peat swamps, stagnant forest pools, and roadside ditches across parts of Borneo and Sumatra. These habitats sit within the lowland peat-swamp forests of the Sunda shelf — some of the most biologically and chemically distinctive freshwater environments on Earth. The water is dark with humic acids and tannins leached from decomposing vegetation, essentially tea-coloured to nearly opaque. Dissolved oxygen is low, conductivity is negligible, and pH routinely falls between 3.5 and 4.5. These are conditions hostile to most fish, and B. rutilans thrives precisely because it has adapted to them.

As a labyrinth fish, B. rutilans breathes atmospheric air via its suprabranchial organ and is not dependent on dissolved oxygen in the water column — a critical adaptation for life in stagnant, oxygen-depleted blackwater. Water temperatures in these equatorial lowland swamps are typically warm but can drop during heavy rains; the species prefers the cooler end of the tropical range, with optimal conditions around 75–79 °F. The fish tends to occupy shallow, sheltered microhabitats near the surface or among submerged roots and leaf litter, where it can access air and find cover.

Feeding

In the wild, Betta rutilans is an opportunistic predator of small invertebrates. Terrestrial insects — particularly ants that fall onto the water surface — form a favoured prey item, along with small aquatic arthropods, Daphnia-like crustaceans, and any other invertebrate prey small enough to be taken whole. The upturned mouth and surface-oriented posture reflect a strong bias toward surface feeding.

In the aquarium, the species accepts a variety of small live and frozen foods readily: Daphnia, mosquito larvae, small bloodworm, baby brine shrimp, and fruit flies (Drosophila) are particularly well received. Dried prepared foods are taken by some individuals but are not a reliable staple, and colour and condition suffer on a predominantly dry-food diet. Small, frequent feedings that match the natural foraging pace — several offerings of small prey items per day — suit the species better than single large meals.

Mating

Betta rutilans is a bubble-nester. Males construct a small nest of mucus-bound air bubbles, typically anchored beneath a broad floating leaf, a piece of root, or another horizontal surface close to the water's surface. Nest building is triggered by good conditions — stable, warm, soft, acidic water and the presence of a receptive female — and the male invests considerable time tending and repairing the raft of bubbles.

Courting males intensify their coloration dramatically, the iridescent blue-green scales flashing as the fish display laterally to one another and to females. The male's courtship of the female involves repeated lateral display passes and herding behaviour. A receptive female responds by holding still and allowing approach; unwilling females retreat or display submissive postures. The male's territorial aggression is directed primarily at rival males, and in the small confines of an aquarium a second male is rarely tolerated.

Breeding

Spawning occurs in a tight embrace beneath the bubble nest, the male wrapping around the female in the nuptial clasp typical of bubble-nesting Betta. Eggs are fertilised as they are released, and in the brief moment of the clasp the male simultaneously releases sperm. Falling eggs are caught by the male and placed into the bubble nest. A typical clutch for the coccina group numbers 20 to 40 eggs; spawning bouts may be repeated several times in a session.

At temperatures around 77–81 °F, eggs hatch in roughly 30 to 36 hours. The male guards the nest and retrieves any fry that fall from it; free-swimming fry emerge three to four days after hatching and at that point the male's role typically ends or becomes threatening to the young. The fry are tiny and require very fine first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or paramecia — for the first week or two before they can accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Soft, acidic water is important during the rearing phase; fry raised in hard or near-neutral water show markedly poorer survival in this and related coccina-group species.

In the aquarium

Betta rutilans is a species for the committed specialist, not because it is delicate in absolute terms but because its water-chemistry requirements are far outside the range suited to most community fish. It thrives only in very soft, very acidic water — pH 4.0 to 5.5, hardness near zero — that has been conditioned with peat, botanicals, or real blackwater extract. Tap water treated with conditioner alone is rarely suitable; RO water blended with a tannin source is the reliable approach. In water approaching neutral pH the fish fades, becomes susceptible to bacterial infections, and rarely colours up or breeds.

A small, well-planted species tank of 10–15 US gal suits a pair or small group. Filtration should be gentle — a small sponge filter at low flow is ideal; strong currents stress bubble-nesters and disrupt nests. Floating plants and surface cover are important: the male needs stable air access and nesting sites, and all members of the species appreciate dim, sheltered conditions over bright open water. B. rutilans is peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates in large enough quarters but is best kept alone or with very small, non-aggressive species that share its chemistry requirements. Long-lived for its size — potentially five to seven years under good care — but rarely seen in the trade and almost always acquired through specialist breeders or wild-betta societies.

Conservation

Betta rutilans is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B2ab(iii), assessed in January 2019. The listing reflects a severely restricted area of occupancy and continuing decline in habitat quality. Peat-swamp forest across Borneo and Sumatra — the matrix within which B. rutilans and its close relatives live — has been cleared at catastrophic rates for palm-oil agriculture, timber, and drainage for subsistence farming. Peat fires, which can burn underground for months and sterilise entire swamp systems, represent a further acute threat. Road construction opens previously inaccessible swamp forest to collection pressure and further habitat conversion.

The species has no formal protection and its precise range within the broader coccina-group distribution is not fully documented. Captive populations maintained by specialist hobbyists and wild-betta societies represent a meaningful insurance against the complete loss of genetic diversity, and exchange of captive-bred stock through these networks is the primary mechanism keeping the species available without wild collection pressure. Aquarists keeping B. rutilans are encouraged to work through established wild-betta groups, maintain breeding records, and avoid sourcing wild-caught individuals, whose removal from already stressed populations cannot be justified.
