Betta schalleri is a small, secretive wild betta endemic to Bangka Island in Indonesia, where it haunts the acidic brown waters of peat swamps and forest streams. Known to science only since 1994, it belongs to the pugnax group of mouthbrooding bettas — after spawning, the male takes the fertilised eggs into his mouth and incubates them for roughly a week and a half, eating nothing in the process. The species is assessed as Endangered by the IUCN, its fate bound almost entirely to the survival of Bangka's rapidly shrinking peat-swamp forests.

Taxonomy & naming

Betta schalleri was described by Maurice Kottelat and Peter K.L. Ng in 1994 in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 5, number 1, pages 65–78), in a paper that also revised several other small Betta of the western Sundaic region. The type locality is recorded as a site 3 mi north of Payung on the road to Pangkalpinang, Bangka Island, Indonesia; the holotype is deposited as ZRC 35170 in the Zoological Reference Collection of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, Singapore. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Betta schalleri Kottelat & Ng, 1994 as the valid name.

The species is placed in the pugnax group, a clade of small, cryptically coloured mouthbrooding bettas distributed across the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, and the surrounding islands. Members of this group share certain meristic and morphological characters — including a caudal spike in males — that separate them from the bubble-nesting and other mouthbrooding groups within Betta. Within the pugnax group, B. schalleri is apparently endemic to Bangka and has not been recorded from Sumatra or Belitung despite the geographic proximity of those landmasses.

Morphology

Betta schalleri is a small fish, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2 in. Males tend to be slightly larger and more robust than females, with a proportionally broader head — a character shared with other pugnax-group species and thought to be functionally related to mouthbrooding. Males also develop a characteristic caudal spike (a prolonged central ray of the caudal fin) and longer pelvic fins, both useful field-marks in an otherwise modestly coloured fish.

The body colouration is subdued: brownish to olive-tan overall, with dark horizontal or oblique markings and a degree of iridescent scaling that can flash bluish or greenish in raking light. As in most wild bettas, the fins of territorial or courting males become more intensely coloured — blue, green, or reddish tints intensify during display. Females are generally plainer and lack the caudal spike. Both sexes have the labyrinth organ (a suprabranchial air-breathing structure) characteristic of the suborder Anabantoidei.

Habitat

Betta schalleri is known exclusively from Bangka Island, Indonesia, where it inhabits forest swamps, peat swamps, and hill streams. The waters it occupies are characteristically acidic and soft — pH in the range of approximately 4.5 to 5.5, with general and carbonate hardness of near zero — and brown to light-amber in colour from dissolved humic and tannic acids leached from decomposing peat and leaf litter. The total extent of occurrence (EOO) for the species is estimated at roughly 2,506 mi², and the population is considered to occur at only five threat-defined locations on the island.

As a labyrinth fish, B. schalleri can supplement gill-breathing with atmospheric air gulped at the surface, which allows it to survive in the low-oxygen, stagnant water typical of blackwater peat swamps. This adaptation does not, however, free it from dependence on the swamp-forest habitat itself: the peat-swamp biotope regulates water chemistry, provides structural cover from submerged roots and debris, and supports the invertebrate prey base the fish relies on.

Feeding

Like most wild bettas, Betta schalleri is a carnivore or micro-predator in nature, subsisting on small invertebrates available in and around the swamp-floor zone: aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and surface-fallen insects are the probable dietary staples in its peat-swamp biotope. Detailed stomach-content studies specific to this species are not available in the published record, but its habitat and body plan are consistent with the feeding ecology documented for other pugnax-group bettas.

In captivity the species accepts a range of small live and frozen foods — mosquito larvae, Daphnia, small bloodworm, and micro-worms — and can usually be weaned onto high-quality small pellets or frozen foods over time. Because wild-caught individuals come from extremely soft, acidic water, appetite and feeding confidence tend to improve markedly once water chemistry is matched to the species' natural conditions.

Mating

Betta schalleri is a paternal mouthbrooder, placing it in one of the two main reproductive guilds within the genus. Courtship follows the typical pattern documented for pugnax-group bettas: females are reported to initiate or drive spawning, approaching the male and engaging in the circling, embracing display common to mouthbrooding Betta. The pair lock in an embrace — the male wrapping his body around the female — during which eggs and sperm are released simultaneously.

After each embrace, the fertilised eggs drop toward the substrate. The male collects the eggs in his mouth rather than building a bubble nest. The pair typically embrace multiple times, with the male gathering eggs after each release. Once spawning is complete, the male broods the full clutch alone, and the female's role in reproduction ends at that point.

Breeding

The male broods the fertilised eggs buccally for approximately 8 to 10 days, with incubation time varying somewhat with water temperature. During this period he does not feed, and experienced keepers note that males should not be disturbed or stressed while holding, as they may spit the clutch prematurely. The fry are released as free-swimming, fully formed juveniles that are immediately capable of taking small live foods; unlike the larvae of egg-scattering species, they emerge at an advanced developmental stage.

In an aquarium setting, conditioning the pair on varied live and frozen foods improves spawning readiness. A well-planted species tank with cover (leaf litter, coconut shells, or caves) mimicking the swamp-floor environment is the standard approach. The very soft, acidic water chemistry of the natural habitat — pH around 4.5 to 5.5, near-zero hardness — should be replicated for reliable spawning; fish kept in harder, more neutral water may survive but often fail to breed. Brood sizes are modest, consistent with the mouthbrooding strategy's lower fecundity relative to egg-scattering species.

In the aquarium

Betta schalleri is an uncommon species in the hobby, appearing mainly through specialist breeders and wild-betta societies rather than mainstream retail. It is not an aggressive community fish in the manner of the domestic fighting fish — pugnax-group males can be kept with other small, non-boisterous species in a species tank or with appropriately peaceful tankmates — but intraspecific aggression between males can occur and pairs or trios are the more practical unit. A tank of at least 10 US gal for a pair is advisable, densely planted or furnished with leaf litter and hiding spots to break line-of-sight and replicate the cluttered swamp-floor biotope.

Water chemistry is the critical variable: this species requires genuinely soft, acidic water (pH 4.5–5.5, GH and KH near zero) to thrive. Reverse-osmosis water re-mineralised lightly, or rainwater, is the standard approach. Temperature around 79–81 °F suits it well. Surface access for atmospheric air-breathing is non-negotiable, and filtration should produce very gentle flow — a sponge filter is ideal. Because this is an Endangered species with a restricted wild range, sourcing captive-bred stock from responsible breeders is strongly preferred over wild-caught individuals.

Conservation

Betta schalleri is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), based on an assessment conducted on 7 January 2019. The listing reflects both its extremely small extent of occurrence (estimated at around 2,506 mi², entirely on Bangka Island) and ongoing, severe decline in the quality of its peat-swamp habitat. The principal threat is large-scale conversion of lowland peat-swamp forest to industrial forestry and monoculture plantation agriculture — particularly oil palm — which has accelerated sharply on Bangka in recent decades. Once peat-swamp forest is drained and cleared, its distinctive hydrology and water chemistry are essentially impossible to restore on any practical timescale.

Modelling published by Giam et al. (2012) estimated the probability of extinction for the species at between 5% and 66% by 2050 under plausible land-use scenarios, reflecting genuine uncertainty about how quickly the remaining swamp forest will be lost. There are no formal ex-situ conservation programmes for this species, and its survival in the wild depends almost entirely on the fate of Bangka's remaining intact peat swamps. For hobbyists, keeping and breeding captive stock responsibly through specialist betta societies represents a meaningful contribution to keeping the species represented outside its fragile native range.
