Taxonomy & naming
Betta siamorientalis was formally described by Kowasupat, Panijpan, Ruenwongsa, and Jeenthong in 2012, in the journal Vertebrate Zoology (volume 62, issue 3, pp. 387–397). The type locality is Sai Hai village (13°42′ N, 101°13′ E), Tha Thonglang subdistrict, Bang Khla district, Chachoengsao province, in central-eastern Thailand. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the name as valid under the authority Kowasupat, Panijpan, Ruenwongsa & Jeenthong, 2012.
The species belongs to the splendens group — the complex of bubble-nesting fighting fishes that includes Betta splendens and its closest relatives. Prior to the 2012 description, populations of this fish were likely overlooked as B. splendens or remained undifferentiated in the scientific literature; the new description drew on both morphological and molecular characters to establish its distinctness. It is placed in the family Osphronemidae.
The specific epithet siamorientalis is a Latin compound: Siam, the historical name for Thailand, combined with orientalis (eastern), together meaning 'eastern Siamese' — a reference to the species' distribution in the eastern provinces of Thailand, distinguishing it geographically from the more westward-ranging B. splendens. No widely used common name has been established for this species.
Morphology
Betta siamorientalis is a small fish, with standard length recorded at 1–1.5 in (roughly 1–1.5 in) in wild material from the type description, and FishBase gives a maximum of 1.5 in SL. Like other splendens-group bettas it is moderately compressed laterally, with pointed fins and the elongated anterior rays on the pelvic fins that characterise the group.
The diagnostic colour pattern described by Kowasupat et al. (2012) sets it apart from its congeners: the body is dark brown to black; the opercle is black and carries two parallel reddish vertical bars; the opercular membrane bears red patches. The caudal fin displays a red crescent band near the distal margin, edged with black at the tip. The posterior half of the anal-fin rays is red. No dark transverse bars cross the caudal fin — a character that separates it from certain other splendens-group members. The pelvic fins are black and red with white tips, a feature seen in some related species.
Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern typical of the group: males are more vividly coloured with more elaborate fin development; females are plainer, shorter-finned, and lack the intensity of the male's opercular and fin colouration.
Habitat
The species occupies shallow, still or slowly moving freshwater habitats in the lowlands of eastern Thailand (Chachoengsao, Sa Kaeo, Prachin Buri, and Chon Buri provinces) and western Cambodia (Banteay Meanchey province), with at least one record from Vietnam. These are human-modified and semi-natural wetland landscapes: rice paddy fields, grass-dominated marshes, shallow ponds, lagoons, irrigation ditches, and canals, typically with dense submerged and emergent vegetation. Aquatic plants recorded in association include Leersia hexandra (rice-cut grass) and Eleocharis dulcis (Chinese water chestnut).
Water conditions reported for the habitat span 72–82 °F, pH 5.5–7.5, and hardness 18–215 ppm — a notably wide range that reflects the mix of different microhabitats sampled across its range. The chemistry can shift from mildly soft and acidic to moderately hard and neutral depending on locality and season. Like all labyrinth fishes, B. siamorientalis is a facultative air-breather, capable of supplementing gill respiration with atmospheric oxygen via the suprabranchial labyrinth organ. This adaptation is a defining feature of life in the warm, often oxygen-poor standing water it favours.
FishBase records a rich sympatric community at the type locality and surrounding sites, including Trichopsis vittata, T. schalleri, T. pumila, Trichopodus trichopterus, Anabas testudineus, Lepidocephalichthys hasselti, Pangio anguillaris, Macrognathus siamensis, and Monopterus albus — a typical lowland Southeast Asian wetland assemblage.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of wild Betta siamorientalis is available in the cache. As a member of the splendens group inhabiting shallow vegetated water bodies, it is expected to feed on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates: zooplankton, insect larvae, small insects taken at or near the surface, and other microinvertebrates. This inference is consistent with the feeding ecology of related splendens-group species studied in similar habitats.
In aquarium conditions, the species accepts a variety of small live and frozen foods. Seriously Fish notes Daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia), bloodworm, and small insects as suitable dietary items. A live or frozen food component is advisable for conditioning fish prior to breeding and for maintaining vigour. As a small fish with a correspondingly small mouth, food items should be appropriately sized.
Mating
Betta siamorientalis is a bubble-nest builder. Like other members of the splendens group, the male constructs a floating raft of mucus-coated air bubbles at the water surface, typically anchored under a floating leaf or piece of vegetation. The nest serves as the sole site of egg incubation and larval brooding, and its construction precedes courtship.
Male courtship involves erecting and spreading the fins and flaring the gill covers to display the coloured opercular bars and membrane — a visual intimidation and advertisement display directed at females and rival males alike. A receptive female approaches the nest, and the male wraps his body around hers in the typical anabantoid embrace, releasing sperm and eggs simultaneously. The male immediately collects any sinking eggs in his mouth and deposits them into the bubble nest. After spawning the female typically loses interest and, left in proximity to the nest, may be harassed or attacked by the guarding male.
Breeding
Following spawning, the male takes sole charge of the nest and the developing eggs. He repairs burst bubbles, retrieves any eggs that fall from the nest, and actively defends the site against intruders. Eggs hatch within approximately 24–48 hours at typical water temperatures. The free-swimming stage is reached roughly 3–4 days after hatching, once the yolk sac has been absorbed.
Standard practice in captivity is to remove the female after spawning to prevent male aggression and to allow the male to tend the nest undisturbed. Once the fry are free-swimming and can navigate independently, the male is also typically removed to prevent predation. First foods for the fry must be very small — infusoria, micro-worms, or commercial liquid fry foods — graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. The water level is often kept shallow during the early larval stage to ease access to atmospheric air while the labyrinth organ develops.
In the aquarium
Betta siamorientalis is kept by specialists in wild betta fish, though it is far less widespread in the hobby than B. splendens. Its care requirements follow those of the splendens group broadly: a small, well-covered aquarium with gentle or near-absent surface flow, abundant surface plants or floating cover to support bubble-nest construction, and warm, soft to moderately hard water. Surface access is essential because, as a labyrinth fish, it must breathe atmospheric air directly.
The reported water-chemistry range (72–82 °F, pH 5.5–7.5, hardness 18–215 ppm) is wide enough that the species appears somewhat flexible, but the aquarist should match local collection data where known. Males are aggressive toward one another in the manner of the group and are typically housed singly or with careful planning when multiple males are present. Suitable tankmates are small, peaceful species that will not nip fins or outcompete the betta at feeding — small rasboras, otocinclus, and compatible loach species often work. As with all splendens-group bettas, a tight-fitting lid is necessary because the fish will jump.
Because this is a wild species account, captive populations should ideally be maintained with documented locality data to preserve genetic integrity; mixing populations from different parts of the range is discouraged by experienced wild-betta keepers.
Conservation
Betta siamorientalis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the date of this article. FishBase records its status as Not Evaluated (NE). The absence of a formal assessment means that the species' population trend and precise threat profile are not yet documented in the global conservation literature.
The habitats it occupies — lowland rice paddies, seasonal marshes, and irrigation systems across eastern Thailand and adjacent Cambodia — are among the most heavily modified freshwater environments in Southeast Asia. Agricultural intensification, pesticide use, wetland drainage, and water management for irrigation all affect the quality and extent of these habitats. The species is additionally caught for the ornamental fish trade, as are most splendens-group bettas in the region. Given the documented decline of related species in comparable habitats, formal assessment and monitoring would be warranted. Hobbyist cultivation of tank-bred stock sourced responsibly reduces pressure on wild populations.
