Taxonomy & naming
Betta simorum was described by Heok Hui Tan and Peter Kiat Leong Ng in 1996, based on specimens collected from peat bogs in Indonesia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Betta simorum Tan & Ng, 1996. The species is placed in the bellica group, a clade of larger wild bettas from the Sundaland peat-swamp zone that also includes Betta bellica from peninsular Malaysia; members of the group are distinguished from mouthbrooding wild bettas by their bubble-nesting reproductive strategy and from the splendens group by details of squamation, colour pattern, and fin morphology.
The specific epithet simorum is Latin for 'of the swamps' or 'of the bogs', a direct reference to the species' characteristic peat-swamp habitat. Type locality is the peat bogs of Indonesia, with the species subsequently documented from Sumatra (Jambi and Riau provinces, Indragiri basin) and western Kalimantan near Pontianak. The restricted, fragmented distribution across two major islands suggests either a historically broader Sundaland range now reduced by habitat loss, or colonisation during the low-sea-level connections of the Pleistocene.
Morphology
Betta simorum is a moderately large wild betta, reaching around 2.5–3.5 in total length, with a typical adult size closer to 2.5–3 in. FishBase records a maximum of 2.5 in SL; field accounts and hobbyist observations suggest individuals can approach 3.5 in (roughly 3.5 in) under favourable conditions. The body is elongate and laterally compressed in the typical Betta fashion, with pointed fins and a rounded to slightly lanceolate caudal fin rather than the elaborate finnage of selectively bred ornamental strains.
Males are more vividly coloured and somewhat more slender than females, which tend to be deeper-bodied. Colouration in both sexes features iridescent scales against a darker ground, with males showing stronger blues and greens; exact hue varies with mood and lighting. As a labyrinth fish, Betta simorum possesses the suprabranchial organ characteristic of the suborder Anabantoidei — a paired, folded respiratory structure that allows the fish to breathe atmospheric air directly, an adaptation to the oxygen-poor blackwaters it inhabits.
Habitat
Betta simorum is strictly confined to blackwater peat-swamp forests and associated streams — among the most chemically extreme freshwater environments on Earth. The water in Sumatran and Kalimantan peat swamps is stained a dark tea-brown by humic and fulvic acids leaching from partially decomposed organic matter, with pH values that routinely fall between 3 and 6 and conductivity that may be extraordinarily low (around 50 µS/cm or less). Temperatures are warm, typically in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius in undisturbed forest.
The physical structure of the habitat is equally distinctive: a substrate of waterlogged peat and fallen leaves beneath dense tree root systems, with surface vegetation and abundant submerged wood. This tangled architecture provides the cover and the humid, sheltered microhabitats that bubble-nesting bettas need. Dissolved oxygen is low by most freshwater standards, a condition that the labyrinth organ compensates for by allowing the fish to gulp air at the surface. Betta simorum shares this habitat with a depauperate fish fauna; very few species tolerate conditions this acidic, giving wild bettas a largely competitor-free environment within their niche.
Feeding
Betta simorum is a carnivore in nature, taking primarily small invertebrates from the water column and surface. Dragonfly (odonate) nymphs, small aquatic insects, and other invertebrates make up the bulk of the diet in the wild. The slow, tannin-stained water of peat swamps harbours relatively few fast-moving prey, and the fish's ambush-oriented hunting style — lurking among roots and leaves before striking — suits this environment.
In captivity the species accepts a range of small live and frozen foods: Daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia), bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and similar invertebrate prey. Varied live and frozen foods are strongly preferred over prepared dry foods, and conditioning on a high-quality invertebrate diet is important for bringing fish into breeding condition. As with other wild bettas, a diet heavy in commercially raised bloodworm alone is a common mistake; dietary variety is important for long-term health.
Mating
Like all members of the bellica group, Betta simorum is a bubble-nester. The male constructs a raft of mucus-bound bubbles at the water surface, typically anchored beneath a broad leaf, a piece of bark, or another flat floating surface that provides shelter from above. The nest is built before courtship begins and maintained actively throughout the spawning period.
Male Betta simorum court females with lateral displays that combine fin-spreading, body undulation, and colour intensification — a behavioural repertoire shared across wild bubble-nesting bettas, directed at both potential mates and rival males. Females signal receptivity through posture and colouration. In the wild, the dense structure of peat-swamp vegetation provides the visual barriers and territorial boundaries that regulate male interactions and allow subordinate fish to avoid prolonged confrontation.
Breeding
Spawning takes place beneath the bubble nest. The pair assume an embrace typical of anabantoids — the male wraps around the female as she releases eggs, which he fertilises and then collects in his mouth before depositing them in the nest. This is repeated across multiple embraces until the female is spent. The male takes sole charge of guarding the nest, retrieving any eggs or larvae that fall, and maintaining the bubble raft.
Eggs hatch within a few days at typical temperatures; the larvae hang vertically from the nest, sustained by their yolk sacs, before becoming free-swimming. At this point the male's direct care lessens, though he continues to defend the area. A critical note for captive breeding: the suprabranchial (labyrinth) organ of young fish develops through exposure to air — fry must be able to reach the surface and breathe humid air above the waterline. Keeping the tank tightly covered so that the air layer above the water is warm and moist is important during this developmental period; cold draughts across the surface can impair labyrinth development and cause fry losses.
In the aquarium
Betta simorum is best suited to experienced keepers willing to commit to its demanding water chemistry. The species requires soft, extremely acidic conditions — pH in the range of 3 to 6, with very low mineral content — to remain healthy long-term. Reverse-osmosis water conditioned with peat or catappa leaves and botanicals is the standard approach; hard tap water with neutral pH will cause slow decline even if the fish appears to tolerate it initially. A temperature around 81–82 °F suits the species well.
A species-specific or carefully chosen community setup is advisable. The fish is not aggressive in the way that domesticated bettas can be, but the extreme water chemistry rules out most tankmates. A planted, botanicals-rich aquarium with subdued lighting, abundant cover, and a tight-fitting lid — to keep the humid air layer the fish depends on for labyrinth breathing — reflects the natural habitat and shows the species at its best. A canister or overturned cup near the surface provides the sheltered spawning site the male will naturally seek. Gentle, minimal filtration is appropriate; strong currents are incompatible with the still-water peat-swamp environment.
Betta simorum is not widely available in the hobby and commands a price that reflects both its scarcity and its specialist requirements. Captive-bred specimens are preferable on conservation grounds; wild-caught fish from habitat already under pressure should be avoided wherever captive-bred stock exists.
Conservation
Betta simorum is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with the 2019 assessment reflecting the species' restricted range and the rapid loss of its peat-swamp forest habitat. The species' occupied area has been estimated at roughly 500–2,0 mi², a figure that continues to contract as lowland Sumatran and Kalimantan peat swamps are drained and converted for agriculture — predominantly oil palm and pulpwood plantations — and subject to repeated fire events. Peat-swamp forest is among the most carbon-dense ecosystems on Earth, and its destruction is both an ecological and a global climate concern.
Betta simorum's extreme habitat specialisation makes it highly sensitive to water-quality change. Even partial drainage of surrounding forest alters the hydrology and chemistry of peat swamps, raising pH and conductivity above the range the fish tolerates. The species has no viable habitat refuge outside the peat-swamp zone, so population declines track habitat loss closely. Trade collection for the ornamental fish market is an additional, if lesser, pressure. Hobbyists who keep Betta simorum can support conservation by sourcing captive-bred stock, maintaining breeding colonies, and supporting the habitat-protection efforts that are the only long-term safeguard for this and the many other organisms endemic to Sundaland peat swamps.
