Taxonomy & naming
Betta simplex was described by Maurice Kottelat in 1994 from specimens collected in Krabi Province, southern Thailand. It belongs to the picta group of the genus Betta, a cluster of species characterised by paternal mouthbrooding rather than the bubble-nesting behaviour associated with the familiar Siamese fighting fish and many of its near relatives. The picta group is distributed across the Thai–Malay Peninsula and western Indonesia, with Betta simplex representing the group's northernmost presence on the Thai mainland.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer et al., California Academy of Sciences) treats Betta simplex Kottelat, 1994 as the valid name, and there are no synonyms currently in use. The species was collected and described comparatively late given its proximity to a well-travelled tourist coastline, a reflection of how easily small, habitat-specialist fishes can be overlooked even in accessible country.
Morphology
Betta simplex is a small, slender betta reaching approximately 3 in total length. The body plan follows the general pattern of the picta group: elongated and laterally compressed, with pointed unpaired fins and a rounded to slightly pointed caudal fin rather than the elaborate finnage bred into ornamental strains of the genus. Coloration in males features iridescent blue-green scales on the flanks, with red and blue tones in the fins; females are plainer and shorter-finned, as is typical across the genus.
Like all Betta, it possesses the labyrinth organ — a suprabranchial respiratory structure that allows the fish to take atmospheric oxygen at the surface, supplementing gill respiration. This adaptation is key to surviving in still, warm, or periodically oxygen-depleted water, though the karstic pools occupied by Betta simplex are generally well-oxygenated and clear rather than blackwater.
Habitat
Betta simplex occupies karstic limestone sinkholes and clear pools in Krabi Province, southern Thailand. These habitats are visually distinctive: the water has a bright blue-green cast caused by dissolved calcium carbonate, a product of the limestone substrate, giving the pools an appearance more reminiscent of a coral-blue cenote than a typical Southeast Asian freshwater habitat. The water is clear, often with good light penetration, and surrounded by overhanging vegetation that provides shade and leaf litter.
Water chemistry departs markedly from the soft, acidic blackwater associated with many other wild bettas. Seriously Fish records pH 7.0–7.4 (neutral to mildly alkaline) and high calcium hardness reflecting the limestone-derived mineral loading. FishBase reports a temperature of approximately 81 °F for the habitat, while Seriously Fish notes a temperature of around 68 °F in at least one field observation — the species may tolerate some thermal variation within its restricted karstic microhabitat. The labyrinth organ is less critical here than in oxygen-poor swamp settings, but the fish still surfaces to breathe and requires unobstructed access to the air–water interface.
Feeding
In the wild, Betta simplex feeds on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates in and around the limestone pools. Like most bettas it is an opportunistic predator of insects, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other invertebrates that fall onto or live near the water surface.
In captivity the species accepts a range of small live and frozen invertebrate foods — Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworm — as well as quality dried foods once acclimated. Live and frozen foods are important for conditioning breeding stock and for eliciting natural foraging behaviour. As a small betta, it feeds on correspondingly small prey and is not suited to large pellets.
Mating
Betta simplex is a paternal mouthbrooder, and its mating behaviour differs from that of bubble-nesting bettas in several important ways. Courtship involves flaring and lateral displays by the male, followed by a spawning embrace in which the pair wrap around each other in the characteristic Betta embrace — but there is no nest construction, no bubble-nest, and no subsequent nest-guarding phase. The male does not produce a surface foam structure.
After the embrace the fertilised eggs are collected into the male's buccal cavity rather than blown into a bubble-nest. The male then holds these eggs in his mouth for the duration of incubation, remaining largely motionless and refusing food throughout the brooding period. Females play no role in parental care after spawning is complete.
Breeding
The male mouthbroods the fertilised eggs for 9–16 days (Seriously Fish) or approximately 11–12 days (Poungcharean et al. 2025), during which the embryos develop through the pre-flexion larval stage within the buccal cavity. The 2025 reproductive ecology study recorded a modal incubation period of 11 days post-fertilisation (11 DAF), with fry released at the post-flexion stage at a mean standard length of approximately 0.5 in. By 30 DAF the fish had reached the juvenile stage at roughly 0.5 in SL, growth fitting a linear regression of age (DAF) = 0.2425 × SL (mm) + 1.7036.
The male eats nothing during mouthbrooding and should not be disturbed unnecessarily. Once released, fry are free-swimming and independent, requiring appropriately sized first foods such as infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. The 2025 study also noted that broodstocks showed some adaptability to water conditions with lower alkalinity and higher hardness than the strict natural habitat parameters, suggesting modest captive tolerance.
In the aquarium
Betta simplex requires an aquarium replicating the clear, cool-to-warm, hard, and neutral-to-alkaline conditions of its karstic home rather than the soft-acidic setup often assumed for wild bettas. Target pH 7.0–7.4 and moderately hard water with measurable calcium and magnesium content. Temperature around 75–81 °F appears appropriate based on habitat data, though the species may tolerate the low 20s recorded in at least one field observation.
The tank should be well-planted, shaded, and furnished with surface cover — broad leaves, floating plants, or a tight-fitting lid — as bettas are prone to jumping. Water movement should be gentle; the species occupies still-to-very-slow karstic pools in nature. As a mouthbrooder, males should not be kept with boisterous tankmates that might stress a brooding male into spitting the clutch. A species-only or peaceful conspecific setup is recommended during breeding attempts. Given its Critically Endangered status, keeping captive-bred stock rather than wild-caught fish is strongly preferred.
Conservation
Betta simplex is assessed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN (the 2019 Red List assessment was published as Data Deficient, but multiple independent sources including FishBase and Seriously Fish report current CR status reflecting ongoing reassessment as habitat-loss data have accumulated). The species is confined to a handful of karstic limestone sinkholes and pools in Krabi Province, a tourist-dense coastal area of southern Thailand, giving it one of the smallest natural ranges of any betta. Habitat destruction — drainage, development, and degradation of the limestone-pool system — represents the principal threat. Collection for the ornamental fish trade has also historically contributed to pressure on wild populations.
A species with this narrow endemism has no meaningful buffer: the loss of a single sinkhole locality can eliminate a significant fraction of the total population. Captive breeding by responsible hobbyists and specialist betta-keeping groups constitutes an important safety net, and aquarists are strongly encouraged to source tank-bred fish and to participate in studbook or cooperative breeding programmes where these exist.
