Taxonomy & naming
Betta stigmosa was described by Tan Heok Hui and Peter K. L. Ng in 2005, in their comprehensive revision of the fighting fishes of Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei published in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology (Supplement 13: 43–99). The type locality is Sekayu Waterfalls (Sekayu Recreational Forest) near Kuala Berang, eastern Terengganu, Peninsular Malaysia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Betta stigmosa Tan & Ng, 2005.
The species is placed in the pugnax group, a complex of eight closely related forms sharing a large head (28–40% of standard length), brownish ground colour overlaid with iridescent green or blue spots, a juvenile and female pattern of two central body stripes with a dark caudal-peduncle marking, a pointed and elongated anal fin, and a lanceolate caudal fin. Within this complex, B. stigmosa is most similar to B. prima, sharing small adult size, a similar total anal-fin ray count (23–24), lateral scale count (29–30, mode 29), postdorsal scale count (10–11, mode 10), and the presence of a second postorbital stripe on the opercle. The diagnostic combination that separates B. stigmosa from all congeners is the unique fin barring described under Morphology.
Morphology
Adults reach 1–1.5 in standard length, with males approaching the upper limit and females slightly smaller. The body form is typical of the pugnax group: robust and broad-headed, with a head length comprising roughly 33.6–36.5% of standard length and an interorbital width of 29.8–32.1% of head length. Meristic counts are: dorsal spines 0–1, dorsal soft rays 8–9, anal spines 1–2, anal soft rays 21–23, vertebrae 28–29.
The diagnostic feature of the species — and the source of its name — is its fin patterning. In both sexes, the caudal fin carries 5–10 regularly spaced black transverse bars; the dorsal and caudal fins show alternating bluish and black transverse bars in life; the posterior anal-fin rays bear black transverse bars; and the anal fin is edged distally with a dark border. This barred pattern is visible in both males and females and distinguishes B. stigmosa from all other members of the pugnax group. Males are larger, display more intense iridescent scaling on the head, have a proportionally broader head, and carry more extended fins than females.
Habitat
Betta stigmosa inhabits forest hill streams in eastern Peninsular Malaysia. The type locality at Sekayu Waterfalls lies within the Sekayu Recreational Forest of Terengganu; the species' known range extends approximately 93 mi south to Gambang (Pahang) and north to Lata Tembakah (Terengganu), encompassing an extent of occurrence of roughly 3,493 mi². The IUCN categorises the habitat as clear to brown-water swampy forested hillstreams, with the fish occurring among riparian vegetation and submerged leaf litter.
SeriouslyFish characterises suitable habitat as flowing, clear-water forest streams shaded by dense riparian canopy, with substrates of rocks, gravel, leaf litter, and tree roots; marginal and sheltered zones are preferred over open midstream positions. Recorded water chemistry spans pH 5.0–7.0 (soft, acidic), temperatures of 72–82 °F, and hardness of 0–90 ppm — conditions typical of Sundaland forest streams draining laterite or peat-influence soils. Like all labyrinth fishes, B. stigmosa possesses a suprabranchial accessory breathing organ and can extract oxygen directly from air, an adaptation that allows survival in the warm, sometimes oxygen-depleted water of shaded forest reaches.
Feeding
In the wild, Betta stigmosa feeds on small insects, zooplankton, and other small invertebrates available in the stream margin and at the surface. Its microhabitat preference for marginal zones among leaf litter and roots places it well to intercept terrestrial invertebrates falling from overhanging vegetation as well as aquatic prey items.
In the aquarium the species readily accepts live and frozen foods including Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm, and small crickets or other insects. As with most wild bettas, a diet emphasising meaty live or frozen items is preferred over exclusively prepared foods, and regular variety supports both condition and the colouration of the diagnostic fin barring.
Mating
Betta stigmosa is a paternal mouthbrooder. Courtship involves protracted mutual display, with both sexes assessing one another before spawning proceeds. The embrace is a characteristic anabantoid nuptial wrap: the male curls his body around the female as she releases eggs and milt simultaneously. After fertilisation, the female gathers the eggs or spits them toward the male, who takes them into his buccal cavity.
Males in breeding condition are typically larger, more iridescent, and broader-headed than females — characters useful for sexing outside of the breeding context as well. The solitary and somewhat territorial nature of the species means that pairs or small groups are more manageable in captivity than the larger community typical of schooling fishes.
Breeding
Following the embrace and fertilisation, the male incubates the eggs in his mouth for approximately 9–16 days, consuming nothing during this period. At the end of incubation he releases fully formed, free-swimming fry that are capable of feeding immediately on microworm and Artemia nauplii. There is no further parental care after release.
In the aquarium, breeding is best attempted in a species tank or a quiet setup with no boisterous tankmates. The male should be left undisturbed during mouthbrooding, as disturbance can cause him to swallow or prematurely release the brood. Water conditions reflecting the species' native range — soft, slightly acidic water in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius — are most conducive to successful spawning and healthy fry development. Fry are robust at release and grow without unusual difficulty on standard small live foods.
In the aquarium
Betta stigmosa is an infrequently encountered species in the hobby, but one that rewards the effort of sourcing it. A pair or small group can be kept in a well-planted tank of modest size — a 60-litre aquarium is workable for a pair — provided filtration is gentle (the labyrinth organ requires access to still, humid air at the surface, and strong current is unwelcome). Dense planting, floating cover, and ample visual breaks between fish reduce territorial tension.
Water conditions should track the species' native habitat: soft, acidic water (pH 5.0–7.0), temperatures of 72–82 °F, and low hardness. A tightly fitting lid is essential, both to maintain surface air humidity — critical for labyrinth organ function — and because bettas are capable jumpers. The species is not suited to a standard community aquarium; compatible tankmates, if any, are small, peaceful species from similar soft-water forest-stream environments. Feeding on live and frozen meaty foods is straightforward. Availability in the trade is limited and wild-caught specimens are sometimes encountered; tank-bred stock is preferred where obtainable.
Conservation
Betta stigmosa is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (Low 2019, ver. 3.1), reflecting a restricted distribution — Terengganu and Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia — but an absence of quantitative data on population size, trends, or threats. The IUCN assessors noted that research on population biology, life history, and threats is needed, along with monitoring of habitat condition, formal site and habitat protection, and public education regarding the species' vulnerability to forest clearing and stream modification.
The extent of occurrence is estimated at 3,493 mi² — a modest area, concentrated in lowland and hill forest of the east coast drainage. Possible threats include the clearing of forested headwaters for agriculture and development, which degrades stream quality and removes riparian shading. No conservation actions were known to be in place at the time of assessment. The DD status reflects genuine data gaps rather than a presumption of security; the restricted range and forest-stream specialisation of the species are grounds for precautionary concern even absent robust population data.
