Taxonomy & naming
Betta taeniata was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1910, with the type locality recorded as the Senah River in Sarawak, the Malaysian portion of Borneo. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) recognises the valid name as Betta taeniata Regan, 1910, with authority unparenthesised because the species was placed in Betta at original description and remains there today.
The species sits within the picta group of the genus Betta — a cluster of mouthbrooding species centred on Borneo and the Malay Peninsula that share certain morphological and behavioural characters separating them from the bubble-nesting Betta splendens complex. Within the picta group, B. taeniata is distinguished by its banding pattern, finnage, and the specific stream habitats it occupies. Earlier literature sometimes treated records from Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam under this name, but the authentic range is understood to be Borneo, with records from outside the island likely representing misidentified or historically confused populations.
Morphology
Betta taeniata is a moderately slender wild betta reaching around 2 in standard length, placing it among the smaller members of the genus. The body is elongated relative to the deep-bodied domesticated fighting fish, a shape consistent with life in flowing water where streamlining reduces drag.
The common name 'banded betta' describes the most obvious external character: a series of dark vertical or oblique bars on the body, overlying a base colour that ranges from pale buff to olive-brown or greyish, often with an iridescent sheen on the flanks under good lighting. The fins are relatively modest compared with the elaborate trailing fins of ornamental strains, as suits a fish that must navigate current. As in most Betta, males tend to be slightly more colourful and have more pointed unpaired fins than females, though the dimorphism is subtle by comparison with the domesticated splendens complex.
Habitat
Unlike many of its congeners that inhabit still, oxygen-depleted peat swamps and blackwater pools, Betta taeniata favours clear, flowing hill streams with quiet marginal zones — shallow runs over leaf litter, submerged roots, and accumulated detritus along stream edges where current is reduced. The water is often slightly tannin-stained from decaying organic matter but not the dense black-water of the coastal swamp peat. Conditions are typically soft to moderately hard (reports range up to about 90 ppm hardness) and acidic to near-neutral, with pH figures in the literature spanning roughly 5.0–7.0 and temperatures between 22 and 81 °F.
The species is endemic to southern Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo and adjacent northern Kalimantan Barat in Indonesian Borneo. As a labyrinth fish it possesses the suprabranchial organ characteristic of all anabantoids, allowing it to breathe atmospheric air at the water surface — an adaptation that broadens its tolerance of reduced dissolved oxygen but does not free it from the need for surface access in an aquarium setting. Hill-stream populations are subject to seasonal variation in flow, temperature, and tannin load as rainfall fluctuates.
Feeding
In the wild, Betta taeniata feeds on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insects and their larvae, microcrustaceans such as Daphnia, and similar animal prey taken from the water column and surface film. The drift of invertebrates along stream margins and the accumulation of insects in leaf litter create a food supply consistent with the species' preferred microhabitat.
In the aquarium the diet should emphasise live and frozen invertebrate foods: Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp), bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and similar items replicate the natural prey and maintain condition for breeding. High-quality dried foods — small pellets or micro-granules — are accepted by most individuals but should supplement rather than replace live and frozen items, particularly when conditioning fish for spawning. Overfeeding is a common problem with small bettas kept in low-flow setups; small, frequent meals are preferable to large ones.
Mating
Betta taeniata is a paternal mouthbrooder, placing it firmly in the mouthbrooding lineage of the genus rather than the bubble-nesting splendens group. Courtship follows the characteristic pattern for the picta group: the male displays to the female with flared opercula and spread fins, intensifying colour and posturing to assess her receptivity. After an extended and sometimes prolonged courtship, the pair engage in the nuptial embrace in which the male wraps his body around the female and the eggs are fertilised externally.
Immediately after the embrace the male gathers the fertilised eggs into his buccal cavity. In a reversal of the usual expectation about parental roles, he provides all direct care from this point forward, carrying the developing clutch in his mouth and abstaining from feeding throughout the incubation period.
Breeding
Once the male has collected the eggs into his mouth, he enters a period of buccal incubation lasting approximately 9–12 days, during which he eats nothing and retreats to a sheltered position with minimal disturbance. The developing eggs and early-stage fry are held within the oral cavity, where gentle churning oxygenates them. At the end of incubation the male releases the free-swimming fry, which are at an advanced stage of development and able to feed immediately on very small live prey.
In the aquarium, breeding is most reliably achieved in a species-only setup or with carefully chosen, non-aggressive tankmates. The male should not be disturbed or chased during incubation — stress can cause premature release or even ingestion of the brood. Conditioning fish on a diet of live and frozen invertebrate foods, and providing the slightly acidic, soft-to-moderately-hard stream-type water the species prefers, encourages spawning. First foods for the released fry include freshly hatched Artemia nauplii and cultured microorganisms; the fry are relatively large and robust compared with the newly-hatched larvae of bubble-nesting species.
In the aquarium
Betta taeniata is an infrequently imported but rewarding species for the specialist keeping wild bettas. It is best maintained in a species tank or with small, peaceful, non-fin-nipping companions that will not harass the male during mouthbrooding. A tank of 15–20 US gal is adequate for a pair or small group; the key requirements are a tight-fitting lid (as for all labyrinth fishes, which leap readily), surface access for air breathing, and a soft, dim, well-decorated interior with leaf litter, driftwood, and low-flow filtration to replicate the stream-margin conditions of the wild habitat.
Water chemistry should target the soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral conditions the species experiences in Bornean hill streams: pH around 5.5–7.0, temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius (72–79 °F), and low to moderate hardness. Adding dried botanicals — Indian almond leaves, oak leaves, or similar — releases tannins and humic acids that both approximate the natural environment and have mild antimicrobial effects. Gentle sponge filtration is preferable to power filters, which create current that can stress the fish and interfere with bubble-nesting in congeners; for B. taeniata a very gentle flow is acceptable given its stream origins, but turbulence should be avoided. Males will display territorial behaviour toward one another, so pairs or trios with one male are the usual keeping arrangement.
This species is rarely available as wild-caught fish; most specimens in the hobby are bred by specialist anabantoid keepers. Sourcing captive-bred stock supports sustainable practices and ensures the fish are acclimated to aquarium conditions.
Conservation
Betta taeniata is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, a designation that reflects the absence of adequate population data rather than a finding that the species is not threatened. Its restricted range — confined to a relatively limited area of southern Sarawak and adjacent northern Kalimantan Barat on Borneo — means that habitat loss, degradation of hill streams through agricultural runoff, logging, and road construction, and collection pressure could all affect wild populations without generating the baseline survey data needed to assign a quantitative threat category.
Borneo's interior forests and their associated drainage systems have faced substantial conversion pressure over recent decades, and clear-water hill streams are among the habitats most sensitive to catchment disturbance. The species' dependence on clean, flowing water with stable chemistry makes it a potential indicator of stream health in the regions it occupies. Until systematic population surveys are conducted across its range, the Data Deficient assessment serves as a caution rather than reassurance, and conservation of Bornean freshwater habitats broadly benefits this and many other stream-endemic species.
