Taxonomy & naming
Betta tussyae was described by Dietrich Schaller in 1985, with the type locality given approximately 48 mi south of Kuantan and 11 mi south of Pekan in Pahang state, eastern Peninsular Malaysia — roughly 1 mi from the coast. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Betta tussyae Schaller, 1985. The species belongs to the coccina group, a cluster of morphologically similar, small, reddish bettas from the blackwater drainages of Sundaland, united by their compact size, deep body pigmentation, and bubble-nesting reproductive mode.
The specific epithet honours Tussy Nagi, wife of Austrian aquarist Peter Nagy. It was Peter Nagy who first brought living examples of the species out of Malaysia to Europe in 1979 — some six years before the formal description — introducing the fish to the hobby before science had assigned it a name. The patronym acknowledges that early contribution from the collecting side.
Morphology
Betta tussyae is among the smaller coccina-group bettas, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in in wild specimens; aquarium fish in the 1–1.5 in range are typical. The body is deep and laterally compressed in the fashion of the group, with a relatively large head and upturned mouth suited to taking prey from or near the surface.
The ground colour is reddish-orange, and the body carries two darker, roughly parallel longitudinal stripes along the flanks. The pelvic fins are red with a distinctive white tip — a field mark useful in separating coccina-group species. The median fins (dorsal and anal) lack the iridescent green spots found in some relatives. Fin-ray counts are characteristic of the group: 11–12 dorsal rays and 27–28 anal rays. Males are more intensely coloured and carry longer, more elaborate fins than females; in full display the reds deepen considerably.
Habitat
Betta tussyae is an obligate peat swamp inhabitant. In the wild it occupies blackwater streams and standing water within coastal peat swamp forest, where the substrate is typically covered in a deep layer of decomposing leaves, roots, and organic debris. The water column is stained dark brown by dissolved humic and fulvic acids leaching from the peat; conductivity is extremely low and the pH can fall to 3.0–4.0 — among the most acidic environments tolerated by any ornamental fish.
Temperatures in its range vary from the low 20s to the upper 20s Celsius (approximately 72–81 °F), with coastal Pahang typically in the warmer part of that band. Dissolved oxygen is low, a consequence of the high organic load and slow, shaded water — this is precisely the environment that favours the Betta clade's defining adaptation: the labyrinth organ, a suprabranchial accessory breathing structure that lets the fish extract oxygen directly from atmospheric air at the surface. Still or very gently flowing water with dense leaf litter and overhanging vegetation is characteristic; it is not a fish of open, moving streams.
Feeding
In nature, Betta tussyae is an insectivore and invertebrate predator. Small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and similar prey items — make up the bulk of the diet, supplemented by whatever terrestrial insects fall onto the still surface of peat pools. The small mouth and deliberate hunting posture reflect a stalker rather than a pursuit predator.
In the aquarium the species transitions readily to live and frozen foods. Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (Chironomid larvae), and similar soft live or frozen invertebrates are accepted eagerly and form the core of a good captive diet. High-quality small dried foods may be taken but should not be the sole diet; variety and protein quality both influence colouration and reproductive condition.
Mating
Betta tussyae is a bubble-nester. The male constructs a raft of mucus-bound air bubbles, typically beneath a broad floating leaf, a piece of driftwood, or within a sheltered hollow near the water's surface. The nest site is selected and defended by the male, who will chase rival males away and court passing females with spread fins and intensified colour.
Courtship follows the pattern characteristic of osphronemid bettas: the male displays laterally to the female, flaring fins and deepening colour, and if she is receptive she approaches and the pair engage in a nuptial embrace. The male curves his body around the female and they turn partly or fully inverted as spawning occurs. In bubble-nesters this embrace is repeated across several cycles, with eggs released and fertilised each time.
Breeding
Following the spawning embrace, the eggs — which are light and buoyant relative to mouthbrooder eggs — are collected by the male and placed into the bubble nest. The male then guards the nest site and tends the eggs, retrieving any that fall and refreshing the nest as needed. Females are best removed after spawning to avoid harassment.
Eggs hatch after approximately 24–48 hours at typical peat-swamp temperatures. The fry become free-swimming at around 3–4 days post-hatching, at which point the male's guarding role diminishes. The fry are small and require correspondingly fine first foods — infusoria, micro-worms, or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii. Keeping the rearing water soft, warm, and lightly acidic, with minimal surface agitation, gives the best survival. The male is usually removed once the fry are free-swimming to prevent predation.
In the aquarium
Betta tussyae demands soft, warm, acidic blackwater conditions in captivity — this is not a species that tolerates the neutral, moderately hard water suitable for many community fish. Target pH in the 4.0–6.0 range and temperature around 75–81 °F, with very low mineral content; RO water buffered with peat or botanicals is the standard approach. Good but gentle filtration is important; the species is sensitive to ammonia and nitrite but equally sensitive to strong current — a sponge filter or small hang-on-back at low flow suits it well.
A heavily planted, leaf-littered tank of modest size (a 10–15 US gal aquarium is adequate for a pair or trio) with a tight-fitting lid is ideal. The lid matters: like all labyrinths the fish breathes at the surface, and a cold draught over the labyrinth organ can be harmful, especially in young fish. Floating plants and broad-leaved species provide bubble-nest anchor points and cover. The species is generally peaceful but males will spar, so only one male should be kept per tank unless the aquarium is large and well-planted. Tankmates, if any, should be small, non-aggressive, and equally comfortable in blackwater — nano rasboras or small Corydoras from similar habitats are sometimes used.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Betta tussyae as Endangered (EN) under criterion B1ab(iii), assessed in December 2018. The listing reflects the species' highly restricted range — coastal Pahang and Terengganu in eastern Peninsular Malaysia — and the ongoing destruction of lowland peat swamp forest across that range. Peat swamps in Malaysia have been drained, burned, and converted to oil palm and other agricultural uses at a substantial pace over recent decades; the blackwater streams and pools that Betta tussyae depends on have no alternative habitat to retreat to.
Aquarium collection has historically added pressure, though most fish in the hobby now come from captive breeding rather than wild capture. Serious hobbyists and specialist betta societies maintain breeding colonies of wild-type stock, which provides a captive buffer and reduces demand on wild populations. For aquarists, sourcing captive-bred fish from reputable breeders is the most direct conservation contribution available.
