Betta uberis is a small, vividly coloured wild betta from the peat swamp forests of Central and West Kalimantan, Borneo, where it inhabits some of the most chemically extreme freshwater habitats on Earth — near-sterile, coffee-dark water with a pH that can drop below 4.0. A member of the Betta coccina group of bubble-nesting peat-swamp specialists, it reaches barely 1.5 in standard length, yet males carry iridescent green flashes on the fins and body that are striking in the dim light of their native blackwater swamps. The IUCN has assessed the species as Vulnerable, reflecting rapid contraction of Bornean peat swamp habitat.

Taxonomy & naming

Betta uberis was described by Heok Hee Tan and Peter Kang Lim Ng in 2006 in a paper presenting six new Betta species from Borneo, published in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (vol. 17, no. 2, pp. 97–114). The type locality is Borneo, and the species is recorded from Central and West Kalimantan, the Indonesian portion of the island. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (the authority for valid names) records the valid combination as Betta uberis Tan & Ng, 2006.

The species belongs to the Betta coccina group, an assemblage of small, stenotopic peat-swamp bettas united by their habitat preference, a characteristically slender body, bubble-nesting reproductive strategy, and shared meristic features including nine abdominal vertebrae. Other members of the coccina complex include B. coccina, B. tussyae, B. persephone, and several recently described congeners. Within this group, B. uberis is distinguished by a combination of meristics — 14–17 dorsal fin rays — and the male's iridescent green markings on the unpaired fins and a green lateral body patch.

Morphology

Betta uberis is a slender, small betta reaching a maximum standard length of around 1.5 in. Like other members of the coccina group it has an elongate, laterally compressed body, a pointed snout, and relatively large, rounded fins. The dorsal fin carries 14–17 rays, a character used in the original description to separate B. uberis from close relatives.

Males are the more conspicuous sex. When alive and in good condition, males display iridescent green markings on the unpaired fins and a green lateral patch on the body — a vivid accent against the otherwise dark, warm-brown base coloration typical of blackwater bettas. The iridescence varies with angle and lighting and is most striking under directed light. Females are plainer, with shorter fins and subdued coloration — the standard sexual dimorphism of the genus.

Habitat

Betta uberis is a stenotopic specialist: its range is confined to peat swamp forests and associated slow-moving streams and pools of Central and West Kalimantan, Borneo, including drainages of the Arut basin, the Sampit river basin, and the Sukadana district of West Kalimantan. These habitats are among the most chemically distinctive freshwater environments on Earth. Decaying organic matter — principally peat and fallen leaves — acidifies the water and leaches tannins and humic acids that stain it a deep amber-brown. pH in true peat swamp pools can fall below 3.0–4.0, dissolved oxygen is low, conductivity is negligible, and mineral content is close to zero.

The physical structure of the habitat is equally specific: B. uberis lives among fallen leaves, submerged roots, branches, and overhanging riparian vegetation in shallow, still, or barely flowing water. The fish is so tightly adapted to these conditions that it can reportedly survive brief periods in moist leaf litter when pools seasonally contract. As a labyrinth fish — possessing the suprabranchial organ that allows direct atmospheric air-breathing — it is well suited to oxygen-depleted water, supplementing gill respiration with air gulped from the surface.

Feeding

Betta uberis is a carnivore, taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates in the wild — insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other tiny prey items associated with the leaf-litter substrate and water surface of peat swamp pools. Prey are intercepted by ambush or careful stalking through the litter rather than open-water pursuit.

In captivity the species accepts a range of small live and frozen foods: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and small mosquito larvae are all taken readily. Dried and prepared foods may also be accepted with conditioning. Because of the fish's small size, food must be appropriately scaled — fine, small particles rather than standard aquarium flake. A diet weighted toward live or frozen invertebrate prey maintains best condition and colour.

Mating

Betta uberis is a bubble-nester. The male constructs a nest from mucus-bound air bubbles, typically anchored beneath a broad floating leaf, a piece of overhanging vegetation, or inside a narrow tube or cavity near the water surface. The nest is the focal point of both courtship and subsequent parental care, and the male invests considerably in defending and maintaining it.

Courtship follows the typical coccina-group pattern: the male displays to a female with extended fins and intensified coloration, showing off the iridescent green markings that distinguish males in this group. A receptive female approaches the nest; the pair engage in a spawning embrace beneath or beside it, with the male wrapping himself around the female in the characteristic anabantoid nuptial clasp. Eggs and sperm are released during the embrace, and the male collects any falling eggs to deposit them in the bubble nest.

Breeding

Spawning in captivity requires replicating the extreme blackwater chemistry of the species' native habitat — attempting to breed B. uberis in hard, alkaline water is rarely successful. Water with a pH of 4.0–6.0, negligible hardness (18–90 ppm total dissolved solids), and a temperature of 72–81 °F (72–81 °F) is appropriate. Heavily tannin-stained water, achieved with dried leaves or peat filtration, is strongly recommended.

Clutches are modest — typically fewer than 20 eggs, though up to 50 have been reported. Eggs are deposited in the bubble nest and hatch within 24–48 hours at typical breeding temperatures. The male guards the nest throughout incubation, retrieving any eggs or newly hatched larvae that fall from the nest and returning them to the bubble raft. Fry become free-swimming after approximately 3–4 days and can accept microworm and freshly hatched Artemia nauplii immediately. The male should be removed once fry are reliably free-swimming, as his attention may shift from guarding to predation.

In the aquarium

Betta uberis demands soft, warm, highly acidic water and is not a fish for the average community tank. Its narrow chemistry requirements — pH 4.0–6.0, negligible hardness, temperature 72–81 °F — mean it is best kept as a species unto itself, in a small, dedicated setup where water chemistry can be managed precisely. A tank of 10–15 US gal is ample for a pair or a small group, heavily planted or decorated with dried leaves, driftwood, and floating surface cover to replicate the peat swamp structure. Gentle filtration is essential: the species comes from near-still water and is intolerant of strong current.

As a labyrinth fish, B. uberis must have unobstructed access to the water surface to breathe atmospheric air; the space between the waterline and a tight-fitting lid should be kept warm and humid to avoid chilling the labyrinth organ. Males may be kept singly or in small groups in larger setups with visual breaks, but individual variation in aggression should be monitored. The species is best suited to experienced aquarists comfortable managing blackwater chemistry — those already keeping other coccina-group bettas, wild-type Parosphromenus, or similar peat-swamp anabantoids will find the husbandry familiar.

Conservation

Betta uberis is assessed as Vulnerable (VU, criterion B1ab(iii,v)) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 7 December 2018. The primary threat is habitat loss: peat swamp forests across Kalimantan have been cleared and drained at large scale for palm oil agriculture, timber extraction, and conversion to other land uses. Fire, both accidental and set deliberately to clear land, has destroyed large areas of peat swamp, and drainage of peat for agriculture releases stored carbon and makes former swamp areas permanently unsuitable for aquatic organisms.

Betta uberis is a stenotopic specialist — it cannot simply relocate to less degraded habitat because no equivalent habitat exists outside intact peat swamp. Its restricted range in Central and West Kalimantan means that continued peat swamp loss could rapidly reduce or eliminate populations. Aquarists keeping the species in dedicated blackwater setups contribute to its captive population, which provides a buffer should wild populations decline further.
