Taxonomy & naming
The two-tone cory was described by Han Nijssen and Isaäc Isbrücker in 1967 as Corydoras bicolor, from material taken in the Sipaliwini River near the Brazilian border, part of the Corantijn (Corantyne) river system in the Paru savanna of Nickerie, Suriname. The species was revisited in Nijssen's later Surinamese and generic revisions of Corydoras.
It was placed in the large genus Corydoras Lacépède, 1803 (family Callichthyidae). Because that genus — well over 170 species — proved not to be a single natural lineage, the 2024 revision by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues split it into several genera, including Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus and Osteogaster, and under that scheme the two-tone cory becomes Hoplisoma bicolor. We keep the familiar heading 'Corydoras bicolor', under which it is traded and written about, while noting the current combination. The specific name bicolor — Latin for 'two-coloured' — is descriptive, for the contrast between its pale body and dark upper parts and fins.
Morphology
This is one of the smaller corys, reaching only about 1–1.5 in in standard length; females grow larger and fuller-bodied than males, seen best from above, and mature males tend to have more pointed fins. Like all Corydoradinae it is armoured rather than scaled, with two overlapping rows of bony scutes down each flank, a hard helmet-like head and three pairs of short barbels around the downturned mouth.
The namesake feature is its two-tone pattern: a pale, often whitish to pinkish or light-bronze body contrasting with a markedly darker dorsal region and dark dorsal fin, giving a clean bicoloured look. It is considered closely related to the similarly small, contrastingly marked Hoplisoma burgessi. The dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each carry the usual stiff, mildly venomous leading spine.
Habitat
Corydoras bicolor is a Guiana Shield species, known from the upper Sipaliwini and the coastal river systems of Suriname and the neighbouring Guianas. These are soft, acidic, often blackwater forest streams running over white sand and leaf litter, draining ancient crystalline bedrock — nutrient-poor, tannin-stained, and far removed from the silty Andean Amazon.
The reported envelope reflects that: warm water around 72–79 °F, an acidic to barely neutral pH (roughly 4.6–7.4 in hobby records), very soft and low in carbonates, with low conductivity. As with other corys it is a facultative air-breather, surfacing to gulp air and absorb oxygen through a vascularised hindgut, an adaptation for the warm, shallow, oxygen-poor pools of these forest creeks.
Feeding
The two-tone cory is a benthic omnivore and detritivore that works the sandy bottom continuously, burying its snout and barbels to taste out small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms and organic detritus and expelling cleaned sand through the gills. Given its small size it takes correspondingly small prey. In the aquarium it accepts sinking tablets, granules and finely crushed flake, plus live and frozen foods such as small bloodworm, Daphnia, grindal and white worm, the richer of which are useful for conditioning a group ahead of spawning.
Mating
Corydoras bicolor is an egg-laying shoaler with no pair bond and the family's characteristic 'T-position' courtship. A ready female cleans a spawning site, the group becomes active, and a male places himself at right angles to her head; she appears to take his milt at the mouth, sperm is thought to pass quickly through her gut to fertilise the few eggs held in a basket of her clasped pelvic fins, and she presses them onto a firm surface, repeating the cycle a few eggs at a time. Spawning observations specific to this small, seldom-kept species are scarce, and this account follows the well-documented behaviour of its relatives.
Breeding
There is no detailed, published aquarium breeding report for Corydoras bicolor, which remains a rare and demanding import. By the standard Corydoradine pattern — and given its blackwater origins — it would likely be triggered by a cool, soft, acidic water change mimicking the rains, lay small batches of adhesive eggs on firm surfaces, and give no parental care, adults eating the eggs unless eggs or parents are separated. Eggs of related corys hatch in roughly three to five days, and fry take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods after the yolk is absorbed. Soft, clean, warm water is likely to be important to success. We flag the absence of a confirmed report rather than presenting borrowed detail as fact.
In the aquarium
A delicate, sought-after fish for the cory specialist rather than a beginner's community staple, Corydoras bicolor needs careful, soft-water husbandry. It is a shoaling species, genuinely stressed when kept alone or in twos — keep six or more, ideally more, for confident behaviour. Being small it can be housed in a modest tank, but bottom area still matters more than height, and a footprint around 17.5–23.5 in suits a group.
Substrate is critical: soft sand only, never sharp or coarse grit, which erodes and infects the barbels these fish push into the bottom to feed. Replicate its blackwater home — warm (about 72–79 °F), soft, acidic, tannin-stained water (botanicals and leaf litter help), gently filtered, well-oxygenated and impeccably clean, with regular small changes. It is wholly peaceful and best kept in a quiet biotope or soft-water community with small tetras and pencilfish, away from boisterous or large tankmates. Net with care, as the fin spines snag, and transport gently — a stressed cory can release skin toxins that may kill the group in the small volume of a bag, a real risk with so small and sensitive a species.
Conservation
Corydoras bicolor is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (assessment dated 2021). It occupies soft-water forest streams of the Guiana Shield and faces no identified species-level threat, and it is only a minor, intermittent presence in the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is limited. Even so, the clearwater and blackwater creeks of the Guianas are vulnerable to deforestation and especially to gold-mining, which loads them with sediment and mercury, as well as to road building — pressures that fall directly on the shallow, sandy, low-nutrient habitats this species depends on. As a small, narrowly distributed fish it would benefit from periodic reassessment as its range and the region's mining footprint change.
