Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Han Nijssen in 1971, in Beaufortia, as one of two new species and a new subspecies of Corydoras. The epithet honours Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723–1799), the German physician and ichthyologist whose great coloured plates were foundational to the study of fishes. A form named at the same time as a subspecies, Corydoras blochi vittatus, was later raised to full species rank (Corydoras vittatus) by Isbrücker in 2001.
Nijssen placed the fish in Corydoras Lacépède, 1803, where it remained as that genus ballooned past 170 species. The 2024 phylogenetic revision by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society) split Corydoras into several genera — but, crucially, the lineage that keeps the name Corydoras in the strict sense had to retain the species genuinely belonging to it, and blochi is one of those: Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and the published revision list it as remaining Corydoras blochi. So, unlike many of its relatives, this fish needed no new combination — its name simply stayed put while the genus around it shrank.
Morphology
This is a small cory, reaching close to 2 in in standard length (about 2 in SL recorded). It is built on the familiar Corydoradinae plan: a compact, armoured body sheathed in two rows of overlapping bony scutes, a blunt helmeted head, three pairs of barbels around the downturned, sediment-probing mouth, and stiff defensive spines in the dorsal and pectoral fins.
The common name 'spotback' points to its markings — a patterning of dark spots and blotches, often concentrated dorsally, over a paler ground, the kind of disruptive mottling that separates the many short-snouted corys of the Guiana and northern Amazon waters from one another. It is a short-snouted, moderately built fish rather than a slender or deep-bodied extreme.
Habitat
Corydoras blochi occurs across the northern edge of South America's great river systems — recorded from Venezuela, Guyana and northern Brazil, spanning the Orinoco drainage, the Guiana coastal rivers and the northern Amazon tributaries such as the Rio Branco. This is a wide range for a small cory and crosses the watershed between the Orinoco and Amazon basins.
The fish lives in warm, soft to moderately hard waters — temperatures around 72–79 °F, pH roughly 6.0–8.0 and hardness from very soft up to about 25 dH — in shallow, slow stretches of streams and river margins over sand and leaf litter. As in all the subfamily it is a facultative air-breather, gulping air at the surface and absorbing oxygen through a vascularised hindgut, an adaptation to the warm, often oxygen-poor shallows it favours.
Feeding
Corydoras blochi is a benthic omnivore and detritivore. It works the bottom continuously, burying its snout and barbels in sand to taste out small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms and organic detritus, sieving mouthfuls of sediment and expelling the cleaned grains through the gill openings. Its trophic level is low, in keeping with this substrate-grazing habit. In the aquarium it readily takes sinking prepared foods, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp and small live foods, foraging across the bottom throughout the day.
Mating
No detailed spawning account is published for Corydoras blochi specifically, but the Corydoradinae share a stereotyped, well-studied courtship. They are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond. A receptive female cleans a spawning surface and the group becomes active; a male takes the classic 'T-position' at right angles to her head, she appears to take milt into her mouth, and the sperm passes rapidly through her gut to fertilise the few eggs held in a basket formed by her pelvic fins, which she presses onto the cleaned site. The sequence repeats, a few eggs at a time, until the clutch is complete.
Breeding
Aquarium breeding of this species is not well documented, so reproductive detail follows the genus. Corydoras lay adhesive eggs in small batches on cleaned surfaces, commonly triggered by a cool, large water change mimicking the onset of the rains. They give no parental care and will eat their own eggs, so breeders remove either the eggs or the adults. Eggs typically hatch in three to five days depending on temperature, and the fry take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods after absorbing the yolk sac. Whether C. blochi has been bred in numbers in the hobby is not clearly on record.
In the aquarium
Corydoras blochi appears in the trade only occasionally, but it is a straightforward fish to keep by cory standards. It is a shoaling species and should be kept in a group of six or more, over soft sand or very smooth, rounded fine gravel — sharp or coarse substrate erodes and infects the barbels these sand-sifters depend on, one of the commonest signs of poor husbandry. Provide warm, well-filtered, well-oxygenated water (about 72–79 °F), tolerant across a fairly wide pH and hardness band, with leaf litter and wood for cover and a gentle current. It is utterly peaceful and suits a calm community of tetras, pencilfish, rasboras and dwarf cichlids. The usual cautions apply: the fin spines can snag in nets, so use a cup, and a distressed cory can release a skin toxin that, in a confined bag, can harm the whole group, so transport them with care.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses this species as Least Concern, evaluated in 2020. The rating reflects its broad distribution across the Orinoco, Guiana and northern Amazon drainages and the absence of evidence for significant decline. As with most widespread small corys, that status is best read as 'no current evidence of trouble' rather than a detailed population guarantee: deforestation, mining, agriculture and damming continue to degrade the shallow waters of the region, but the species' wide range gives it a buffer that narrowly endemic corys lack.
