Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras caramater was described in 2024 by Luiz F. C. Tencatt, Oliver L. P. Couto, Sergio A. Santos and Leandro M. de Sousa in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology, on the basis of material from the rio Xingu and rio Tapajós basins of Pará State, Brazil. It is a member of the long-snouted, 'saddle-snouted' group historically labelled 'lineage 1' in the molecular phylogenies of the Corydoradinae.
That lineage placement matters for the name. In 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a large phylogenetic revision (DOI 10.1093/zoolinnean/zlae053) that broke the bloated genus Corydoras into several genera — Brochis, Hoplisoma, Osteogaster, Gastrodermus, Aspidoras, Scleromystax and a much-reduced Corydoras in the strict sense. The species that retained the name Corydoras are essentially those of lineage 1, the long-snouted forms anchored to the type species. Because C. caramater sits squarely in that lineage, it stays in Corydoras s.s. — and was in fact described under that name in the same period. The specialist site Corydoras World places it in the Corydoras lineage, consistent with the Catalog of Fishes. The epithet caramater is a coined word from the Latin cara ('dear, beloved') and mater ('mother'), dedicating the species to the mothers and wives of the authors.
Morphology
This is a small, comparatively elongate cory, reaching only about 2 in in standard length — the original description records a maximum of roughly 2 in SL. Its defining feature is the snout: it is a long-snouted, 'saddle-snouted' form, with a noticeably produced, gently arched rostrum rather than the short, blunt face of the familiar bronze cory.
Like all Corydoras it is armoured rather than scaled, with two rows of overlapping bony plates running down each flank and a hard, helmeted head; three pairs of barbels fringe the downturned mouth. Among the technical characters used to separate it from its relatives are a branch of the temporal sensory canal at the sphenotic bearing two pores rather than one, an upper tooth plate of the branchial arch with three or four rows of teeth, and a small fleshy flap at the corner of the mouth below the maxillary barbel. The dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each carry the stiff locking spine typical of the genus.
Habitat
Corydoras caramater is known from two adjacent clearwater drainages of the southern Amazon shield — the rio Xingu and the rio Tapajós — in Pará State, Brazil. These are classic 'clearwater' rivers draining ancient crystalline uplands, very different in chemistry from the white-water Amazon mainstem: relatively transparent, nutrient-poor and seasonally fast.
Within these basins the species has been collected from small forest streams up to the channels of smaller rivers. In one well-documented site, the igarapé Limãozinho in the Tapajós drainage, it was found mostly in shallow water — only about 12 in deep — in channels one to three metres wide, with slow to moderate current over a bottom of fine sand and gravel, scattered with leaf litter, submerged branches and patches of aquatic plants. That combination of shallow, well-oxygenated, sandy-bottomed clearwater stream is the habitat picture for the species.
Feeding
Like its congeners, C. caramater is a benthic forager that works the sandy bottom of its streams, using its barbels and downturned mouth to taste and sift the substrate for small invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans and organic detritus. Specific dietary studies of this newly described species have not been published, but its mouth structure, body form and microhabitat — shallow sand-and-leaf-litter streams — leave little doubt that it occupies the same sand-sifting omnivore/detritivore niche as other long-snouted corys, processing mouthfuls of sand and expelling the cleaned grains through the gill openings.
Mating
No spawning observations have been published specifically for Corydoras caramater. Across the genus, however, reproduction is remarkably uniform: corys are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond and the distinctive 'T-position' courtship, in which the male presents himself at right angles to the female's head, she takes up his milt, and a small batch of adhesive eggs is clasped in a basket formed by her pelvic fins and pressed onto a cleaned surface. The sequence repeats until dozens of eggs are distributed across leaves, stones or wood. There is no reason to expect this species departs from that pattern, but until it is bred in captivity the details remain inferred rather than observed.
Breeding
Corydoras caramater has not, as far as the published record shows, been bred in the aquarium, and no clutch sizes, incubation times or fry data exist for it. By analogy with other Corydoras the expectation is straightforward: a small clutch of adhesive eggs scattered on hard surfaces, spawning triggered by cool, fresh water mimicking the rains, no parental care, and fry that take microfoods after absorbing the yolk sac. Because the species is a clearwater-stream specialist, breeders would likely need to reproduce its soft, clean, well-oxygenated water to have any success. For now this section is honestly a blank in the literature — a target for the first aquarists to obtain the species.
In the aquarium
Corydoras caramater is essentially absent from the ornamental trade; it is a recently described, range-restricted clearwater species rather than a commercial fish, and almost everything that can be said about keeping it is extrapolated from its wild requirements and from the husbandry of related long-snouted corys.
If it were kept, the wild data point clearly: a group of six or more (corys are shoalers and stressed when kept alone), a soft fine-sand substrate to protect the barbels, gentle but well-oxygenated flow, scrupulously clean water and stable, soft, slightly acidic clearwater conditions in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius. It would suit a calm community of small, peaceful fishes — never boisterous or large tankmates. The usual cory cautions apply: the fin spines tangle easily in nets, and a stressed cory can release a skin toxin that, in a confined bag, can kill the whole group, so any future imports should be moved with care.
Conservation
Corydoras caramater has not been assessed by the IUCN — it was described only in 2024 and has no Red List status. As an honest matter that means its conservation situation is formally unknown rather than secure. What is known gives some cause for attention: it is currently recorded only from two drainages, the rio Xingu and rio Tapajós, both of which face intense pressure from hydroelectric development, deforestation and mining in the Brazilian Amazon. The rio Xingu in particular has been heavily altered by the Belo Monte dam complex. A narrow-range clearwater specialist in such a setting is exactly the kind of species whose status should be evaluated, and any future assessment will need basic distribution and population data that do not yet exist.
