Taxonomy & naming
The schoolmate cory was described in 1980 by Han Nijssen and Isaäc Isbrücker, from Cumuri Creek in the Oyapock (Oiapoque) River system of French Guiana — still its type locality. For over four decades it sat in the great genus Corydoras Lacépède, 1803, the dominant genus of South American armoured catfishes in the family Callichthyidae, and the hobby still knows it by that name.
In 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a sweeping revision of the subfamily Corydoradinae that broke the unwieldy Corydoras into several genera. Under that scheme this species moves to Brochis Cope, 1872 — a genus historically used for the high-finned 'giant' corys but now redefined on molecular grounds to take in a broader lineage. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase accordingly list the current combination as Brochis condiscipulus, and we note that here while keeping the long-familiar Corydoras heading. The species epithet records a real piece of natural history: condiscipulus, 'schoolmate', was chosen because the fish occurs in sympatry with the closely similar C. oiapoquensis, the two found together in roughly the same waters.
Morphology
This is a modestly sized cory, reaching about 2 in standard length, with the deep, plated, blunt-headed build of the subfamily: two rows of overlapping bony scutes along each flank, a hard helmeted head, and three pairs of barbels fringing the downturned mouth. It is one of the longer-snouted corys, and that elongated snout — together with a narrower body and a shorter pectoral spine — is among the features used to tell it from its near-twin C. oiapoquensis, which is shorter-faced and reaches a smaller size.
The colour pattern is the typical mottled, spotted scheme of many Guianan corys, well suited to a tea-stained creek bottom of leaf litter and sand. As in all corydoradines the dorsal and pectoral fins bear stiff, mildly venomous spines, a defensive feature that also makes the fish awkward to net.
Habitat
Corydoras condiscipulus is endemic to the Oyapock River basin, the river that forms much of the border between French Guiana and the Brazilian state of Amapá. It is found along the length of the system, from creeks under tidal influence near the coast up to forest headwaters. Much of the Oyapock is blackwater — stained dark by tannins leached from the surrounding rainforest — running clear but acidic over sand and submerged leaf litter beneath dense canopy.
Reported parameters fit that setting: warm water around 68–79 °F, an acidic to neutral pH of roughly 6.0–7.5, and soft water. The species shares these shaded, soft-water creeks with C. oiapoquensis, the 'schoolmate' of its name, the two often netted together.
Feeding
Like its relatives, the schoolmate cory is a benthic foraging omnivore. It moves over the sandy, leaf-strewn bottom of its home creeks, probing with its barbels to sift out small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms, fallen seeds and the organic detritus of the litter layer. In the aquarium it is an undemanding feeder, taking sinking dried foods, frozen and live bloodworm, Tubifex and similar small fare; as with all corys a varied diet keeps it in good condition, and it should not be left to live on what others drop.
Mating
Corydoras condiscipulus is an egg-laying shoaler with no pair bond, and although its spawning has not been described in fine detail it is expected to follow the well-studied corydoradine pattern. A ready female cleans a site, the group grows active, and a male takes up the characteristic 'T-position' at right angles to her head; the female holds a small clutch of eggs in a basket formed by her pelvic fins and presses them onto the cleaned surface, repeating the sequence in small batches. No territory is defended and the adults form no lasting pairs.
Breeding
Captive breeding of this species is little documented — it is an occasional import rather than a commercially farmed cory. By analogy with related blackwater corys, spawning would be encouraged by soft, acidic water and a cool, rain-mimicking water change, producing small clutches of adhesive eggs scattered across plants, wood and glass and given no parental care; breeders separate eggs or adults, since the latter will eat the spawn. Eggs of comparable corys hatch in a few days and the fry take microworm and newly hatched brine shrimp once free-swimming. Specific clutch sizes and timings for C. condiscipulus are not on record, so these remain expectations from the group rather than measured figures.
In the aquarium
The schoolmate cory is a fish for the soft-water and biotope enthusiast more than the general community keeper, reflecting its restricted range and irregular availability. Its needs are those of any cory, with an emphasis on water chemistry: keep it in a shoal of six or more, over soft sand that will not abrade its barbels, with clean, gentle, well-oxygenated water.
Given its blackwater origin it does best in soft, acidic to neutral water in the 72–79 °F range, ideally with tannin-stained water from leaf litter or botanicals to echo its home creeks. It is wholly peaceful and suits a quiet South American community of small tetras, pencilfish and dwarf cichlids; fittingly, it can be kept alongside C. oiapoquensis, the 'schoolmate' it shares its waters with in the wild. Handle by cup rather than net to avoid snagging the fin spines, and transport with care, as stressed corys can release skin toxins in a confined bag.
Conservation
Corydoras condiscipulus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, evaluated in 2020. It occupies a single river system but appears widespread and reasonably common throughout the Oyapock, much of which still runs through intact forest on both the French Guianan and Brazilian sides. As a one-basin endemic it is nonetheless inherently more vulnerable than the continent-spanning trade corys: deforestation, gold-mining and the mercury pollution that accompanies it, and watercourse disturbance in the region are the pressures most likely to affect its blackwater creek habitats, and a single-drainage range leaves little margin if those habitats degrade.
