Taxonomy & naming
The duplicate cory was described by David Sands in 1995 in the hobbyist literature (Freshwater and Marine Aquarium magazine), in a paper introducing four new Corydoras from upper Rio Negro tributaries. The holotype came from the Rio Poranga, a small tributary of the upper Negro in Brazil, and that remains the type locality. Sands chose the epithet duplicareus — from the Latin duplicare, 'to double' — precisely because the new fish so nearly duplicated the colour pattern of the already-known Corydoras adolfoi.
For most of its life in the hobby it has been written as Corydoras duplicareus, and that is the name under which it is bred and sold. But the genus Corydoras had swollen to well over 170 species and molecular data showed it was not a single natural lineage. In 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a phylogenomic revision (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society) that split the old genus and resurrected several names; under that scheme this species becomes Hoplisoma duplicareum — Hoplisoma being a neuter name, so the epithet shifts to '-um.' Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now lists Hoplisoma duplicareum (Sands 1995) as the valid combination. The change is recent and the aquarium trade still overwhelmingly says 'Corydoras duplicareus,' so we keep that as the heading while flagging the current name. The species sits in what earlier workers called Lineage 9, the short-snouted corys, together with the other Rio Negro saddle-back species.
Morphology
This is a small, fairly deep-bodied cory reaching only about 1.5 in standard length (roughly 2 in in total length), with females growing larger and noticeably rounder than males. Like all members of the family Callichthyidae it is armoured rather than scaled: two overlapping rows of bony plates run down each flank and the head is a hard, blunt helmet, with three pairs of barbels fringing the downturned mouth.
The colour pattern is the whole point of the fish. The body is pale cream to pinkish-white, crossed by a dark mask that runs through the eye, and capped by a single bold black stripe — the 'saddle' — running along the dorsal surface from the nape into the dorsal fin and back along the upper body. Between mask and saddle sits a patch of warm orange-to-coppery pigment on the nape, which in duplicareus tends to be more intense than in its look-alikes. The species is most easily confused with Corydoras adolfoi; the black back-stripe is usually broader and the nape colour richer in duplicareus, and it generally has a higher-backed body, but the only truly diagnostic difference is that duplicareus bears fine serrations on the posterior edge of the pectoral-fin spine, which adolfoi lacks. Those serrations are almost impossible to see without magnification. As in all corys the dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff, mildly venomous spines.
Habitat
Corydoras duplicareus is known only from a small part of the upper Rio Negro system in Brazil — a genuinely restricted range, in contrast to the continent-spanning corys of the trade. This is classic Amazonian blackwater country: tea-coloured water stained dark by tannins and other organic compounds leaching from the surrounding flooded forest, with very low dissolved-mineral content, low conductivity and a strongly acidic pH that in the wild can fall to around 4–5.
The type locality was a fast-flowing stretch over a sandy bottom, but the species is generally associated with the quieter margins of these forest streams and the inundated leaf-litter of the igapó — soft sand and drowned wood, dappled shade, and the company of small characins, pencilfishes and Apistogramma dwarf cichlids. FishBase records a broad captive tolerance (about 72–79 °F, pH 6.0–8.0, soft to moderately hard water), but the wild fish is a soft, acid, warm-water specialist. Like all corys it is a facultative air-breather, periodically darting to the surface to gulp air and absorb oxygen through a modified, vascularised hindgut — an adaptation for the warm, oxygen-poor pools it inhabits.
Feeding
The duplicate cory is a benthic omnivore. In its blackwater home it works the sand and leaf-litter, sifting the substrate through its barbels for small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and the organic detritus and biofilm that accumulate as leaves and wood decompose — a food source that is also crucial for fry. It is an opportunist, not a specialist. In the aquarium it readily takes sinking pellets and tablets, larger sinking flake, and frozen or live bloodworm, Daphnia, Tubifex and grindal worm, the meatier items being especially useful for conditioning a group toward spawning. It should never be left to scavenge other fishes' leftovers or treated as a clean-up crew; a varied, dedicated diet keeps it in condition.
Mating
Corydoras are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond and the genus's distinctive, well-studied courtship. When a female ripens she cleans a site — a leaf, a smooth stone, a flat rock or the aquarium glass — and the group grows active. A male positions himself at right angles to the female's head in the classic 'T-position'; she takes his milt, and the eggs she clasps in a basket formed by her pelvic fins are fertilised as the sperm passes by. She then carries the small batch of sticky eggs to the cleaned surface and presses them into place. The sequence repeats, a few eggs at a time, the pair working their way around the chosen surfaces over the course of a spawning.
Breeding
Unlike its scarce, locally distributed wild populations might suggest, duplicareus is bred with some regularity by dedicated cory keepers, and Planet Catfish logs a number of successful breeding reports. Conditioning a group — skewed toward more males than females — on rich live and frozen foods, then triggering a spawn with a large, cool water change of soft, acidic water that mimics the onset of the rainy season is the standard approach. The adhesive eggs are deposited on the substrate, on plant leaves and flat surfaces, or up near the waterline, and receive no parental care; in fact the adults will eat them, so breeders remove either the eggs or the parents. Eggs hatch in roughly three to five days depending on temperature, and the fry — after absorbing the yolk sac — take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods, with the biofilm on leaf litter providing valuable grazing. Captive breeding matters here: because the wild range is so small, tank-raised stock is the responsible way to keep the species supplied to the hobby.
In the aquarium
This is a rewarding but slightly demanding cory, best suited to a keeper with a little experience and a soft-water, blackwater-styled tank. It is a shoaling fish and is genuinely stressed when kept alone or in pairs; keep a group of at least six, and it will reward you with confident, busy foraging. A group is comfortable in a tank of around 23.5 in with a generous footprint, since bottom area matters far more than height.
Substrate is not negotiable: provide soft sand or very smooth, rounded fine gravel, because corys feed by sifting and sharp or coarse grit abrades and infects their barbels, leaving stubbed, blunted faces — one of the commonest signs of poor husbandry. Décor of driftwood, dried leaf litter and shade-giving plants suits the fish and helps recreate the tannin-stained water it comes from. Water should be warm but not hot (about 72–79 °F), soft and slightly acidic for best results, well-filtered and clean, with gentle flow; air-driven sponge filtration is ideal, especially in breeding setups. It is utterly peaceful and makes an excellent companion for small tetras, pencilfishes, rasboras and Apistogramma. Two standard cory cautions apply: the fin spines can tangle in a net (a cup is safer), and a badly stressed cory can release a skin toxin that, in the confined volume of a bag, may kill the whole group — so transport them carefully.
Conservation
Corydoras duplicareus is assessed by the IUCN as Data Deficient (assessment dated 2020): it is known from such a small portion of the upper Rio Negro, and so little is documented about its true range, population and trends, that assessors could not place it in a threat category. That uncertainty is itself worth noting — a narrowly distributed blackwater endemic is inherently more vulnerable than a wide-ranging generalist like the bronze cory, and the broad pressures on Amazonian freshwaters (deforestation, run-off, changing land use) bear on the forest streams it needs. The encouraging counterweight is the ornamental trade: the species breeds in captivity, tank-raised fish circulate in the hobby, and responsible keepers favour them, which eases collection pressure on the wild stock while the science catches up on where, and how many, these fish really are.
