Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras ephippifer was described in 1972 by the Dutch ichthyologist Han Nijssen, in his account of Brazilian and French Guianan corydoradine catfishes published in the Netherlands Journal of Zoology, in which he named eight new species at once. The type locality is a creek on the right bank of the rio Amapari in Amapá State, northeastern Brazil. The epithet ephippifer is from the Greek/Latin for 'saddle-bearing,' a direct reference to the dark, saddle-shaped marking the fish carries over the dorsal region.
For more than half a century it was simply Corydoras ephippifer. In the 2024 revision of the Corydoradinae by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues (DOI 10.1093/zoolinnean/zlae053), which broke the old super-genus Corydoras into several genera, this species falls within the resurrected genus Brochis — specialist sources such as Corydoras World place it in the Brochis lineage (the larger, straight-snouted species of the subfamily, formerly 'Lineage 8'), giving the current valid combination Brochis ephippifer. The change is recent and the trade still says 'Corydoras ephippifer,' so that remains our heading.
Morphology
This is a medium-sized, fairly elongate cory reaching about 2 in in standard length, with the relatively long, straight-edged snout characteristic of the Brochis lineage rather than the short blunt face of the round-snouted corys. Like all members of the subfamily it is armoured with two rows of overlapping bony plates along each flank, a bony head, and three pairs of barbels around the downturned mouth.
Its name comes from the markings: a pale tan-to-greyish body carries a distinct dark blotch or 'saddle' over the back in the dorsal-fin region, usually with further dark patterning and a band through the eye, giving a cleaner, more contrasted look than many of its plain relatives. The fins are largely hyaline. As in all corys the dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each bear a stiff, locking, mildly venomous spine that can jab a careless hand and snag in a net.
Habitat
Corydoras ephippifer is native to the coastal river systems of Amapá State in far northeastern Brazil, the type material coming from a creek on the rio Amapari, part of the rio Araguari drainage. These are warm tropical lowland and upland streams of the Guiana Shield margin, typically over sand with leaf litter and submerged wood, the usual quiet-margin habitat of corys.
FishBase records it as a freshwater, demersal, tropical species occupying water in roughly the 72–77 °F range with a pH band of about 6.0–8.0 — warm, soft-to-slightly-alkaline conditions typical of the region. As a callichthyid it is a facultative air-breather, surfacing to gulp air and absorb oxygen through a vascularised hindgut, an adaptation that lets corys persist in warm, oxygen-poor pools.
Feeding
Corydoras ephippifer is a benthic omnivore and detritivore, like the rest of the subfamily. It forages over sand and litter, probing with its barbels for small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, fallen organic matter and detritus, sifting substrate through the mouth and expelling it through the gills. It is an opportunist rather than a specialist; in the aquarium it readily takes sinking prepared foods, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, and anything edible reaching the bottom, but should not be left to live on scraps alone.
Mating
As an egg-laying corydoradine, Corydoras ephippifer is expected to spawn in the characteristic 'T-position' of the group: shoaling fish with no pair bond, in which a male aligns at right angles to a receptive female who clasps a small number of adhesive eggs in a pelvic-fin basket and presses them onto a cleaned surface, repeating the act until the clutch is complete. A specific courtship study for this species has not been published, so this is the genus pattern applied to it rather than a documented observation of ephippifer.
Breeding
There is no widely published, detailed aquarium breeding record for Corydoras ephippifer; it is bred only occasionally by specialist cory keepers rather than commercially in quantity. By inference from its relatives it would lay a modest clutch of adhesive eggs in small batches, scattered on plants, wood or glass, with no parental care — the adults taking no part beyond spawning and apt to eat unguarded eggs, so a breeder would remove the eggs or the parents. Eggs of related corys hatch in a few days and the fry take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods. Until firm spawning data for this species are published, those figures should be read as expectations from the genus.
In the aquarium
Corydoras ephippifer reaches aquarists as an occasional import rather than a staple, but it is a straightforward fish for anyone with cory experience. As a shoaling species it should be kept in a group of six or more — kept singly or in pairs it becomes withdrawn and stressed. Give it a soft sand substrate, because corys feed by sifting and coarse or sharp gravel abrades and infects the barbels, leaving the blunted faces that mark poor husbandry. Provide clean, warm (about 72–79 °F), well-filtered and well-oxygenated water with gentle flow, leaf litter and shade, and the broad pH and hardness tolerance typical of the genus. It is wholly peaceful and suits a community of tetras, small rasboras, dwarf cichlids and other calm fish, never anything large enough to bully it. As with all corys, handle with a cup rather than a net to avoid spine-snags, and transport carefully, since a distressed cory can release skin toxins that, in the small volume of a bag, can kill the group.
Conservation
Corydoras ephippifer is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, in an assessment dated 17 September 2020. It occupies the coastal drainages of Amapá and, while not as vast-ranging as the great trade-staple corys, was judged not to face threats severe enough to warrant a higher category. The freshwaters of northeastern Brazil are nonetheless subject to deforestation, mining run-off (Amapá has a long mining history), agriculture and pollution, all of which degrade the stream margins corys depend on. Collection for the aquarium trade is modest and not considered a significant pressure on wild populations.
