Aquascape & setup

Warm, soft to moderately soft water on the gentle side of neutral, in keeping with its lowland-river home. Keep it clean and steady — corys are sensitive to accumulated nitrate and to sudden swings.

Soft, fine sand is non-negotiable: corys feed by sifting substrate through their gills, and sharp or coarse gravel wears their barbels down to stubs. Driftwood, roots, leaf litter and some shade complete a river-margin look, with plenty of open sandy floor to work over.

Community & care

Corydoras are shoaling fish — keep six or more of the same species; a lone or paired cory is a stressed one. They are utterly peaceful bottom-dwellers and belong only with calm, similarly-sized community fish — small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids and the like — never with anything large or boisterous enough to bully a slow-moving fish working the floor.

Corydoras narcissus is one of the long-snouted armoured catfishes of the western Amazon — a pale, slender cory marked with a dark dorsal stripe, described in 1980 from a forest creek in the Rio Purus system of Brazil. It belongs to the body of true, 'saddle-' or 'long-nosed' Corydoras that the 2024 revision of the subfamily left in the genus Corydoras in the strict sense, and it remains an uncommon, somewhat delicate fish in the hobby — admired for its sculpted profile and the sly story behind its name.

Taxonomy & naming

Corydoras narcissus was described by the Dutch ichthyologists Han Nijssen and Isaäc Isbrücker in 1980, in a paper treating three new Corydoras from French Guiana and Brazil. The holotype came from a creek flowing into the Rio Ipixuna, a tributary of the Rio Purus, about 19 mi west of Humaitá in Amazonas, Brazil — still the type locality. The species sits in the family Callichthyidae (subfamily Corydoradinae), the South American armoured catfishes, and is one of the long-snouted, 'saddle-nosed' forms.

For decades the genus Corydoras swelled to well over 170 species and proved not to be a single natural lineage. The large 2024 phylogenomic revision by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues split it into several genera — including Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus, Osteogaster and Aspidoras — but the long-snouted clade containing the type species, C. geoffroy, retained the name Corydoras in the strict sense. C. narcissus falls in that group and so keeps its familiar combination, Corydoras narcissus, after the revision. The specific name carries a wry backstory: it honours the Greek youth Narcissus, who fell in love with his own reflection — a pointed allusion, the describers implied, to collectors who supplied undescribed corys and proposed naming the fish after themselves.

Morphology

This is a medium-sized, elongate cory with a conspicuously long, gently arched snout — the feature that separates it at a glance from the short-nosed corys and even from its close look-alike Brochis (formerly Corydoras) arcuatus, alongside which it lives. Reported sizes run from about 2.5 in standard length (FishBase) to roughly 3 in total length in mature aquarium fish, females growing the larger and rounder. Like all corys it is armoured rather than scaled, with two rows of overlapping bony plates down each flank and a hard, helmeted head; two pairs of rictal barbels and a pair of mental barbels fringe the downturned mouth.

The ground colour of head and body is whitish to pale grey. A conspicuous, slightly uneven black stripe runs from the nuchal plate above and behind the eye back along the upper body to the last dorso-lateral scute, straightening below the adipose fin and then dipping toward the caudal peduncle; a thin dark line shows below the dorsal-fin spine, and scattered black pigment dusts the snout obliquely forward from the eye. The upper dorsal-fin spine, the rear edge of the adipose fin, and certain lower caudal rays carry black, while the remaining fins are clear. The dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each bear a stiff, mildly venomous spine.

Habitat

Corydoras narcissus is known from the Rio Purus basin in the middle Amazon of western Brazil, the type series taken from a small creek draining into the Rio Ipixuna near Humaitá. These are warm, soft, mildly acidic forest waters; FishBase gives a pH range of about 6.0–8.0, hardness from soft to moderately hard, and temperatures around 72–79 °F, while the original collecting water was on the acidic side (pH roughly 6.0–7.2).

It is a bottom-dwelling fish of quieter margins over soft substrate, where its long snout is an obvious adaptation for probing more deeply into sand and leaf litter than the blunt-faced corys can manage. It occurs sympatrically with the similarly long-nosed Brochis arcuatus, the two sharing the same shallow habitats. Like other callichthyids it is a facultative air-breather, periodically darting to the surface to gulp air and absorb oxygen through its vascularised hindgut — a useful trick in the warm, oxygen-poor backwaters it frequents.

Feeding

Like its relatives, C. narcissus is a benthic omnivore and detritivore that forages over the bottom, using its long snout and barbels to taste and sift sand and leaf litter for small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms and organic detritus, expelling cleaned substrate through the gill openings. The elongate rostrum lets it work more deeply into soft sediment than short-snouted corys, which may reduce direct competition with the blunt-faced species it lives among. In the aquarium it takes sinking pellets and tablets, frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, and good-quality flake — but, as with all corys, it should be fed deliberately rather than left to scavenge leftovers.

Mating

No detailed spawning study of C. narcissus has been published, and what is known is inferred from the few hobbyist accounts and from the well-documented behaviour of the genus. Corydoras are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond and a stereotyped 'T-position' courtship: a receptive female cleans a site, a male positions himself at right angles to her head, and she clasps a small batch of eggs in a basket formed by her pelvic fins, pressing them onto the chosen surface before the sequence repeats. In this species the few reports describe very small eggs laid singly or in twos around the tank, often in the current of a filter — much as in the bronze cory.

Breeding

C. narcissus is rarely bred in captivity, and confirmed reproduction reports are scarce; it appears among the long-snouted corys to be considerably less obliging than the common short-nosed species. One hobbyist account describes tiny adhesive eggs scattered around the aquarium at a comparatively warm 77 °F and a near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH, the eggs deposited in the flow of an internal filter. As in the genus generally, no parental care is given and the adults will eat the eggs, so any deliberate breeding would require removing the eggs or the parents. The fish's scarcity and price in the trade — it appears only sporadically, like most long-nosed corys — mean few aquarists keep groups large enough to attempt spawning, and the species remains essentially wild-supplied.

In the aquarium

An infrequent and usually pricey import, C. narcissus is a fish for the experienced keeper rather than the beginner. The long-snouted corys are widely held to be less hardy than the familiar short-nosed forms and notably more demanding of clean, well-oxygenated water, so stable, mature filtration and good current are important. It is a peaceful, shoaling species and should be kept in a group of six or more over soft sand, which both lets it feed naturally and protects the long snout and barbels — coarse or sharp gravel abrades them and invites infection, blunting the very feature that defines the fish.

Provide a planted tank with a soft bottom, gentle to moderate flow, and warm but not hot water (around 72–79 °F). It makes an excellent, retiring companion for tetras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids and other calm community fish, though males can be mildly pushy toward one another, so a larger footprint and some cover help diffuse that. The usual cory cautions apply: the fin spines snag in nets, so a cup is safer, and a badly stressed fish can release a skin toxin that, in the confined volume of a bag, can endanger the whole group during transport.

Conservation

Corydoras narcissus is listed by the IUCN as Data Deficient (assessed 2018), meaning there is not yet enough information on its range, population and trends to judge its risk of extinction. It is known from a restricted part of the Rio Purus system and is collected only in small numbers for the aquarium trade, where its scarcity reflects sporadic wild supply rather than commercial breeding. As with many narrowly known western-Amazon fishes, the broad regional pressures of deforestation, agricultural run-off and changes to river hydrology could affect its habitat, but its actual status cannot be assessed until basic distribution and abundance data are gathered — exactly the gap the Data Deficient listing flags.
