Taxonomy & naming
Corydoras sychri was described by Stanley H. Weitzman in 1960, in a paper figuring and describing four South American catfishes of the genus Corydoras, including two new species (Stanford Ichthyological Bulletin). The type material came from the Province of Maynas, on the right bank of the Río Nanay near Shiriyana, in the Loreto region of Peru — still the type locality. For more than six decades it was carried as Corydoras sychri, a member of the enormous South American armoured-catfish genus Corydoras Lacépède, 1803 (family Callichthyidae).
That genus had become unmanageable — well over 170 species — and molecular phylogenetics showed it was not a single natural lineage. In 2024 Dias, Tencatt and colleagues published a large revision of the Corydoradinae that split Corydoras into several genera, among them Brochis, Hoplisoma, Gastrodermus and Osteogaster. Under that scheme the Catalog of Fishes lists this species as a valid Brochis: the current combination is Brochis sychri (Weitzman 1960). The change is recent and not yet universal, and the trade still says 'Corydoras sychri,' so we keep that as the heading while recording the new combination. The fish sits among the long-snouted, spotted 'fairy cory' species — it is effectively the long-nosed analogue of the round-snouted fairy cory, with which it is easily confused.
Morphology
This is a small, long-snouted cory. Reported maximum standard length is around 1.5 in (males are smaller; females grow larger and rounder, to roughly 2–2.5 in in some accounts), placing it among the more modest-sized species. The defining feature is the head: the snout is long and pointed, with a distinctly angular dorsal profile that drops from the crown down to the nose — quite unlike the blunt, rounded helmet of the bronze cory. Like all members of the subfamily it is armoured rather than scaled, with two rows of overlapping bony scutes down each flank and three pairs of barbels around the downturned mouth.
The colour pattern is a pale, whitish-tan body overlaid with a dense scatter of small dark spots covering most of the flank. Compared with the closely related fairy corys, the spotting in sychri tends to be finer and less sharply defined — a wash of small dots rather than a few bold blotches. A darker masked band typically runs through the eye. The fins are largely clear, sometimes lightly spotted, and as in all corys the leading rays of the dorsal and pectoral fins are stiffened into mildly venomous spines.
Habitat
Corydoras sychri is recorded from the Nanay River basin in the Loreto region of Peru, in the western (upper) Amazon. The Nanay is a blackwater-influenced lowland river, and the species belongs to the quiet-water, soft-substrate guild typical of the genus: shallow stream margins, forest creeks and slow river reaches over sand and leaf litter.
Water across this part of Amazonia is warm, soft and acidic to neutral. Reported aquarium-relevant figures sit at roughly 72–79 °F, a pH band of about 6.0–8.0 and soft to moderately hard water (around 2–25 dH), reflecting both its natural soft-water home and its tolerance in captivity. Like other corys it is a facultative air-breather, periodically darting to the surface to gulp air and absorb oxygen through a vascularised hindgut — an adaptation for the warm, oxygen-poor pools and dry-season shallows of its range.
Feeding
Sychr's cory is a benthic omnivore and detritivore, like the rest of the subfamily. It works the bottom more or less continuously, pushing its long snout and barbels into sand and litter to taste out small invertebrates, insect larvae, worms, micro-crustaceans, fallen organic matter and the film of detritus, expelling cleaned sand through the gill openings as it sifts. Its long, pointed snout suits probing into and under the substrate. In the aquarium it accepts sinking pellets and tablets, frozen and live bloodworm, blackworm and brine shrimp, and the usual sinking community foods — but, as with all corys, it should not be left to scavenge leftovers alone.
Mating
Corydoras are egg-laying shoalers with no pair bond and the well-known 'T-position' courtship, and sychri follows the family pattern. When a female ripens she cleans a spawning site — a leaf, stone or the aquarium glass — and the group becomes active; a male presses against her head at right angles, forming the characteristic T, and she takes his milt. The eggs she clasps in a basket made by her pelvic fins are then carried to the cleaned surface and pressed into place, a few at a time, until the chosen sites are dotted with sticky eggs. Specific spawning observations for sychri are sparse, but there is no reason to think it departs from this conserved corydoradine sequence.
Breeding
Aquarium breeding of this species is not widely documented, and it is a less common import than the staple corys, so most accounts extrapolate from its close relatives in the fairy-cory group. Those species spawn in the typical Corydoras manner: a cool, large water change mimicking the rainy season triggers activity, the adhesive eggs are laid in small batches on firm surfaces, and the adults give no parental care — they will eat the eggs, so a breeder removes either the eggs or the parents. Eggs hatch in a few days, and the fry take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods once the yolk sac is absorbed. Cooler, soft, clean water and a mature group with more males than females give the best chance, but published, repeatable spawning reports for sychri specifically remain thin.
In the aquarium
Sychr's cory is a peaceful, shoaling species best kept in groups of six or more; kept singly or in pairs it becomes withdrawn and stressed. Give it a tank with a generous footprint (around 23.5 in / 20 US gal or more for a group) and, above all, a soft sand or very fine, smooth, rounded gravel bed — its long snout is exactly the organ that coarse or sharp substrate erodes and infects, leaving the blunted, stubby faces that betray poor husbandry.
Water should be warm but not hot (about 72–79 °F), soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral, clean and well-oxygenated, with gentle current and regular changes. As a long-snouted, somewhat fine-spotted species it shows best over dark sand with leaf litter and subdued light. It is utterly peaceful and suits a community of tetras, small rasboras, dwarf cichlids and other calm fish, never anything large enough to bully it. The usual cory cautions apply: the fin spines catch in nets (a cup is safer), and a badly stressed cory can release a skin toxin that, in the small volume of a bag, can kill a whole group — so transport with care.
Conservation
Corydoras sychri is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (assessment dated 2014). It is a fairly localized species of the Nanay drainage rather than a continent-wide complex, but within its range it is not considered threatened, and collection for the aquarium trade is at modest levels. As with all upper-Amazonian fishes, the broad regional pressures — deforestation, agricultural and urban run-off around Iquitos and the wider Loreto region, and habitat alteration — bear on the shallow margins it depends on, but the species itself is not currently flagged as being at risk. Its narrow distribution does mean it warrants more attention than a widespread generalist would.
