Taxonomy & the radiation
Cardiopharynx was erected by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1942 (Revue de Zoologie et de Botanique Africaines), with Cardiopharynx schoutedeni designated as the type species by original designation; the genus has been monotypic ever since and remains so today (Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, genus entry, accessed 2026). The name combines Greek kardia (heart) and pharynx, a nod to the shape of the pharyngeal apparatus, while the species epithet honors Henri Schouteden (1881-1971), the Belgian zoologist who led several Congo expeditions. The type locality is Usumbura, modern Bujumbura, at the lake's northern tip.
The genus sits in subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, tribe Ectodini (Poll, 1986) - the lake's sand- and mud-dwelling mouthbrooder tribe that the Cichlid Room Companion fairly calls Tanganyika's most morphologically and behaviorally diverse group. Sturmbauer & Meyer's foundational mitochondrial phylogeny (Molecular Biology and Evolution, 1993) recovered Ectodini as monophyletic with Cyprichromini as its sister tribe, and clustered Cardiopharynx among the sand-associated genera alongside Ectodus, Aulonocranus, Cunningtonia and Lestradea. The more densely sampled study by Koblmüller, Salzburger & Sturmbauer (Journal of Molecular Evolution, 2004) on the sand-dwelling lineage went further, treating the lineage represented by Cardiopharynx as one of the most ancestral within the tribe and showing that Ectodini repeatedly re-colonized rocky habitats and evolved biparental mouthbrooding convergently. In that framing Cardiopharynx is a useful 'baseline' taxon: a comparatively plesiomorphic open-sand schooler against which the tribe's later specialists (the featherfin Ophthalmotilapia and Cyathopharynx, the goby-like Xenotilapia) can be read. Unlike the endlessly split Lamprologus complex, Cardiopharynx has never been carved up - it is one species, and the literature (Poll 1956; Takahashi 2003; Konings 2015) has left it that way.
Defining features
Cardiopharynx schoutedeni is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed Ectodine reaching about 5.9 in (6 in) total length (FishBase; Konings 2015) - mid-sized for the tribe, larger than the diminutive Xenotilapia but smaller than the featherfins. The body is silvery with a faint metallic sheen, the eye is large, and the head profile is notably rounded compared with its closest look-alikes. The defining 'genus signature' is functional rather than flashy: a subterminal, protrusible mouth and a pharyngeal jaw built for processing fine particulate sifted from sand, the feature Poll's generic name alludes to.
The practical identification problem is telling Cardiopharynx apart from Ectodus descampsii, with which it shares the same biotope and a similar silvery look. The reliable field mark, documented by Konings and summarized on tanganyika.si, is the position of the dark dorsal-fin marking: in Cardiopharynx the black spot sits low, near the base of the dorsal fin, whereas in Ectodus descampsii it sits higher, roughly in the middle of the fin membrane. Cardiopharynx also carries a more rounded head profile. Mature males in breeding dress develop stronger iridescence and the elongated, ocellated finnage typical of Ectodine display, but the genus never approaches the extravagant trailing pelvic 'feathers' of Cyathopharynx or Ophthalmotilapia - a quick way to rule those genera out at a glance.
Range & habitat
The genus is strictly endemic to Lake Tanganyika and, unusually for a rift-lake cichlid, has a genuinely lake-wide distribution rather than a patchwork of geographic races. The 2025 IUCN assessment lists it as extant in all four riparian nations - Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Zambia - and tanganyika.si notes no recognized geographic variants, a contrast with the rock-bound Tropheus or Petrochromis that vary reef by reef. That broad, continuous range follows directly from the habitat: open sand is a connected, low-relief environment, not the island-like patchwork of rocky reefs.
Cardiopharynx is a fish of the sandy littoral and the open water just above it. IUCN gives a depth band of roughly 10-148 ft (10–148 ft) over sand and mud bottoms; in practice it is most often encountered over fine sand in relatively shallow, well-lit areas where it can form its foraging schools. The ambient water is the classic Tanganyikan profile - warm, hard and alkaline. FishBase records a tolerated pH of 7.0-8.5, hardness around 10-15 dH, and temperatures of about 73-82 degrees F (23-28 degrees C); the lake itself runs near pH 9 and very high conductivity at the surface, so wild fish live at the alkaline end of that range. Because it is semi-pelagic over open substrate, it depends on uninterrupted expanses of clean sand rather than on any single rocky structure.
Ecology & diet
Cardiopharynx is built around the sand-sifting and micro-feeding niche that defines much of the Ectodine radiation, but it pushes it toward the open-water end. FishBase (citing Poll's work) describes it as a semi-pelagic microorganism feeder common over sand bottoms that roams in schools of several hundred fish, and tanganyika.si details the mechanics: the fish scoops a mouthful of sand, filters out edible material over the gill rakers, and expels the cleaned sand through mouth and gills. The harvest is the interstitial fauna and flora of the substrate - algae, organic detritus, micro-invertebrates and small crustaceans. The IUCN assessment specifically notes plankton such as copepods in the diet, consistent with a fish that feeds both from the sand surface and from the water column just above it. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.4, squarely a micro-carnivore/omnivore rather than a pure herbivore.
That dual sand-and-water-column strategy is what separates it from its tribe-mates and explains its schooling. Where Xenotilapia species work the sand as tight benthic foragers and the featherfins (Cyathopharynx, Ophthalmotilapia) build sand-crater bowers and feed more in the water, Cardiopharynx behaves like a roving plankton-and-sand grazer that uses large numbers for safety in the exposed open habitat. Its near-relative Ectodus descampsii shares the same flats and overlapping diet, which is exactly why the two are so often confused - they are ecological neighbors as well as morphological ones. In the community, dense Cardiopharynx schools are part of the lake's enormous, productive sand-flat fauna, a prey base for piscivores such as Lepidiolamprologus and the larger open-water hunters.
Behaviour & breeding
Socially, Cardiopharynx is a schooling, comparatively peaceable cichlid for most of the year - its default is the roving aggregation, not the defended territory. That changes at spawning. Like the rest of its tribe it is a maternal (uniparental) mouthbrooder, which is the ancestral Ectodine mode and a sharp contrast with the biparental mouthbrooding that evolved convergently in other branches of the tribe (Koblmüller et al. 2004). Mouthbrooding cichlids in general carry out female-only care far more often than not, and Cardiopharynx is firmly in that camp.
The breeding system follows the classic sand-dweller script described by Konings and summarized on tanganyika.si: males establish small temporary territories on the sand, excavate shallow scrape nests, and display to lure passing females out of the school. Spawning is the standard egg-and-buccal-fertilization sequence of mouthbrooders - the female takes the eggs into her mouth, and incubation runs roughly 18-21 days before she releases free-swimming fry. There is no extended substrate guarding as in the cave-spawning Lamprologini; once the female picks up the clutch, parental investment is concentrated in her mouth. Spawning is keyed to warmth and good condition rather than to any dramatic seasonal trigger in this stable, deep tropical lake. Aggression in this genus is largely transient and tied to those brief male nesting bouts rather than to the year-round reef-holding pugnacity of Tropheus or Petrochromis.
In the aquarium
Honest version: Cardiopharynx schoutedeni is an uncommon, specialist's fish, not a beginner sand-sifter - and it is genuinely scarce in the hobby compared with the Xenotilapia and Enantiopus that fill the same niche. It is exported only sporadically, so most keepers will never see one for sale. If you do, treat it as an advanced project. The single most important requirement, echoed by every keeping reference, is a large footprint of fine sand: tanganyika.si recommends an aquarium of at least 47 in (47 in) in length, and realistically a wider, longer tank is better because this is a schooling, open-water fish that needs swimming room, not just sand. A deep bed of soft, fine sand is non-negotiable - it sifts substrate to feed, and coarse gravel both starves it of natural foraging and can damage the gills.
Keep it as a group with a surplus of females to diffuse male display aggression, and pair it with other open-water sand specialists rather than rock-territorial bruisers; tanganyika.si specifically suggests Xenotilapia-type tankmates. Maintain hard, alkaline water (pH around 8-9), warmth in the 76-79 degrees F range, pristine clean sand and strong, well-oxygenated flow. The mistakes that sink these fish are the usual sand-Ectodine ones: too small or too crowded a tank, gravel instead of fine sand, skittish individuals injuring themselves against the glass (they are jumpy, open-water fish - a tight lid helps), and overfeeding rich foods to a micro-grazer. A subtler trap is hybridization: because Cardiopharynx so closely resembles and overlaps with Ectodus descampsii, keepers who mix the two risk both misidentification and cross-spawning, so keep look-alike Ectodines apart and source stock carefully. For nearly all aquarists, the practical answer is that this is a fish to admire in the wild literature and acquire only if you can give a dedicated, large sand biotope - not a community centerpiece.
Conservation
At the species level the picture is reassuring on paper: Cardiopharynx schoutedeni was reassessed for the IUCN Red List in March 2025 (Sibomana, 2025) and listed as Least Concern, on the grounds that it is a widespread, lake-wide endemic with no evidence of a broad decline and that fishery statistics show it to be very abundant. Population trend is formally listed as unknown. Because the genus is monotypic, that single assessment is the whole story - there is no spread of categories across congeners as there is in larger Tanganyikan genera. The species is taken locally for food and only marginally for the aquarium trade, so targeted collection pressure is low.
The caveats are at the lake level, and they are real even when the species looks secure. The same IUCN assessment flags ongoing habitat degradation from water pollution and, importantly for a sand specialist, sedimentation from soil erosion - exactly the kind of catchment-driven change that smothers the clean sand and littoral this fish depends on. Those local pressures sit inside a larger, well-documented strain on the whole ecosystem: O'Reilly et al. (Nature, 2003) tied regional warming and reduced mixing to an estimated roughly 20 percent decline in primary productivity, and Cohen et al. (PNAS, 2016) inferred substantial loss of oxygenated benthic habitat as the warming, more strongly stratified lake shrinks the habitable depth band. Add the intense pelagic clupeid-and-Lates fishery that feeds four nations and the patchy, cross-border governance coordinated through the Lake Tanganyika Authority, and the honest summary is this: Cardiopharynx is currently a Least Concern, abundant endemic, but it lives in a lake whose productivity, oxygenated habitat and sediment regime are all under measurable, ongoing pressure - so 'secure for now' is the right reading, not 'safe indefinitely.'
