Taxonomy & naming
Malpulutta kretseri was described in 1937 by the Sri Lankan zoologist P. E. P. Deraniyagala, making it one of the earlier anabantoid species formally placed from the island. The type locality is given as Dandegamuva in the wet zone of what was then Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), possibly corresponding to the village of Dandugama in the northwest of the wet zone. A second, smaller colour form was later named M. kretseri minor by Deraniyagala in 1958, but this infrasubspecific taxon is treated as nomenclaturally unavailable and is not accepted by the Catalog of Fishes. Three colour forms are nonetheless documented in the hobby literature.
The genus name Malpulutta derives from a Sinhalese vernacular name applied to the fish in Sri Lanka. The specific epithet kretseri is a patronym honouring B. de Kretser, a Sri Lankan lawyer and naturalist who collected the type specimens and drew Deraniyagala's attention to the species. Malpulutta is currently placed in the subfamily Macropodusinae (family Osphronemidae), the group that includes the paradise fish Macropodus and the Pseudosphromenus spike-tailed paradisefishes; phylogenetic analyses place it in closest affinity to Pseudosphromenus. It is a monotypic genus: M. kretseri has no congeners.
Morphology
Malpulutta kretseri is a small, slender fish reaching about 1.5 in total length, with females and average specimens commonly closer to 1 in. The body is laterally compressed, the profile gently arched above and flatter below. The caudal fin is the most visually striking feature: both lobes are extended into fine filaments, the lower lobe considerably elongated in mature males, giving the fish a rakish silhouette. The dorsal, anal, and ventral fins are also elaborately edged and pointed, contributing to an overall ornate appearance that distinguishes it from the plainer Pseudosphromenus species it resembles in outline.
Coloration is variable across the three documented colour forms but generally consists of a brownish to reddish-brown base overlaid with a metallic sheen, with irregular dark barring or spotting on the flanks and intricate patterning on the fins. Fin membranes typically carry blue, red, and orange pigmentation with fine dark edging or spotting — the source of both the 'ornate' and 'spotted' common names. Sexual dimorphism is moderate: males develop the greatly elongated caudal filaments and more vivid fin coloration at maturity, while females are rounder-bodied and less elaborately finned. Like all labyrinth fishes, Malpulutta possesses the suprabranchial organ that allows it to breathe atmospheric air.
Habitat
In the wild, Malpulutta kretseri occupies shallow, slow-flowing to near-still forest streams within Sri Lanka's wet-zone lowland rainforest — the Gin, Kelani, Kalu, Nilwala, and Bentota river basins are all on record. These streams are typically heavily shaded by closed-canopy forest, with substrates of sand and deep accumulations of leaf litter. The fish hugs the margins and bottom, where fallen leaves, submerged twigs, and dense riparian vegetation provide both cover and a microhabitat rich in small invertebrates.
The water is soft, slightly acidic, and low in conductivity — a characteristic blackwater-to-clearwater profile produced by the leaching of leaf tannins in a catchment with little dissolved mineral load. FishBase records temperatures of 75–82 °F and a pH range of 5.5–7.5, but in the cooler, more shaded stream sites that the species occupies the ambient air temperature and actual water temperature may be on the lower end of that range. All documented sites are below 1,0 ft elevation and within the wet-zone boundary, which receives high and relatively stable rainfall year-round. The species is not recorded from the drier northern or eastern regions of Sri Lanka, and the evidence points to strict dependence on intact or near-intact forest cover in the catchment.
Feeding
Malpulutta kretseri is an insectivore and micro-predator in the wild, taking insect larvae, small crustaceans such as Daphnia, planktonic organisms, and other small invertebrates from the water column and from the leaf-litter layer. FishBase also records fish fry as part of the diet — unsurprising in such a small predator that shares its habitat with the fry of other stream fishes.
In the aquarium the species responds well to live and frozen foods: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, small bloodworm, micro-worm, whiteworm, fruit flies (Drosophila), and crushed small invertebrates. The small mouth imposes an upper size limit on food items, and finely sized live foods are generally preferred over prepared foods, particularly when first settling in. Although some individuals will eventually accept small flake or micro-pellets, a diet anchored in live and frozen food brings the best coloration and conditioning. As with related paradisefishes, frequent small meals suit it better than infrequent large ones.
Mating
Malpulutta kretseri is a bubble-nest builder. Males construct a raft of mucus-bound bubbles, typically positioned under a leaf, an overhang, or some form of surface cover rather than in open water — a secretive nesting strategy that distinguishes it from open-surface bubblers like Macropodus. The choice of a sheltered site appears to be a consistent behavioural tendency in this species, and providing floating leaves (e.g., Indian almond leaf fragments) or a broad-leaved aquatic plant near the surface is therefore important for breeding success.
Courtship follows the pattern common to paradisefishes: the male displays to the female with spread fins and intensified coloration, chasing her toward the nest site. The embrace typical of anabantoid spawning occurs beneath or adjacent to the bubble nest, with the male curling around the female to fertilize eggs as she releases them. Spawning occurs in a series of short embraces, typically yielding between 100 and 200 eggs in a productive session, with the eggs released in small batches over the course of the spawning sequence.
Breeding
After spawning, the male collects the sinking eggs and spits them into the bubble nest, where he takes sole responsibility for guarding them and maintaining the nest structure. The female should be removed at this point as the male may become aggressive toward her once guarding begins. Eggs hatch after approximately 48–60 hours at tropical temperatures; the larvae hang vertically in and below the nest before becoming free-swimming at roughly 5–7 days post-spawning.
The fry are microscopic at first and require very fine first foods — infusoria, paramecia, or commercial liquid fry foods — for the first few days. Newly hatched Artemia nauplii and micro-worm can be introduced once the fry are large enough to take them, typically from about day 5. The male continues to tend the brood and retrieve fry that fall from the nest during the early free-swimming period, though parental attention wanes quickly and the male can be removed once the fry are reliably swimming horizontally. Rearing water should be soft, warm, and very shallow in the early weeks; the labyrinth organ develops gradually, and young fish exposed to cool air drafts at the surface before the organ is fully functional suffer losses. Growth is modest, reflecting the species' small adult size.
In the aquarium
Malpulutta kretseri is an uncommon but well-regarded aquarium fish among specialists in anabantoids and Southeast Asian species. Its small adult size — 1–1.5 in — means it can be maintained in a relatively modest aquarium: a tank of 40 × 8 in footprint is sometimes cited as a minimum, though a longer tank allows more natural behaviour and better display. The tank should be heavily planted, with floating vegetation or leaves at the surface to anchor nest building, and a gentle filtration system that does not create strong surface currents — the species comes from near-still water and is poorly suited to turbulent conditions. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as labyrinth fishes are prone to jumping and can be killed by exposure to cool air.
Water chemistry should reflect the fish's blackwater origins: soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 5.0–7.0), very low conductivity, and temperatures in the range of 75–82 °F. Tannin-stained water from Indian almond leaves or alder cones improves both comfort and color and mimics the leaf-litter streams of the wet zone. The species is generally peaceful with fishes too large to be eaten, but given its small size and retiring nature it fares best in a species tank or with very quiet, comparably sized tankmates. Males can be territorial with each other; a single male is safest unless the tank is large enough to offer genuine separation. Availability in the trade is intermittent and often limited to specialist anabantoid breeders; captive-bred stock is greatly preferred for conservation and health reasons.
Conservation
Malpulutta kretseri is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 7 August 2019, criterion B2ab(iii)), reflecting the sharp contraction of its already restricted range. The species is endemic to the wet-zone lowland forests of south-western Sri Lanka, a region that has experienced catastrophic deforestation: surveys have documented losses of more than 35% of forest cover between 1990 and 2005, with estimates suggesting that less than 5% of the original wet-zone forest remained by 2006. The streams M. kretseri inhabits are dependent on intact forest catchments for their shade, substrate chemistry, and leaf-litter inputs; degraded or open-catchment streams no longer support the species.
The IUCN assessment notes that remaining habitat is highly fragmented, with many occupied patches smaller than 6 mi². Some sites fall within officially protected areas — including the Kottawa Forest Reserve and the larger Kottawa-Kombala complex — but enforcement and effective management vary. Plantation agriculture and historical civil-war-era deforestation are identified as primary threats. The species is legally protected in Sri Lanka, though collection for the ornamental trade continues. Active conservation work, including community engagement and captive assurance efforts, has been carried out through organisations such as the Conservation Leadership Programme. For aquarists, sourcing only captive-bred specimens and supporting in-country conservation initiatives are the most direct contributions available.
