Osphronemus laticlavius is the least familiar member of the genus Osphronemus — the giant gouramis — and also the most striking: mature fish develop vivid red to orange-red edges on the dorsal, anal and caudal fins against a body that turns deep blue-green to nearly black with age. Described by Tyson Roberts in 1992 from Borneo, it remains rare in the trade, grows to at least 19.5 in, and is assessed as Endangered by the IUCN, a status that reflects ongoing habitat loss and targeted collection pressure across its restricted Sundaland range.

Taxonomy & naming

Osphronemus laticlavius was described by Tyson R. Roberts in 1992 in a systematic revision of the Southeast Asian anabantoid genus Osphronemus, published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 2, number 4, pages 351–360). The revision recognised four species within Osphronemus — the familiar O. goramy alongside O. laticlavius, O. exodon, and O. septemfasciatus — all united by the labyrinth organ, the elongated pelvic filament, and the large adult body size that give the giant gouramis their common name. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Osphronemus laticlavius Roberts, 1992.

The genus name Osphronemus derives from the Greek osphra (olfactory organ or smell) and nema (filament or thread), an allusion to the elongated, thread-like pelvic rays that characterise the group. The specific epithet laticlavius is a Latin compound meaning 'broad purple stripe' — latus (broad) plus clavus (stripe; literally the purple stripe on a Roman senator's toga) — referring to the vivid, wide coloured margins of the unpaired fins in adults. The species is placed in the family Osphronemidae, the gouramis, within the suborder Anabantoidei.

Morphology

Like all Osphronemus, O. laticlavius is a large, deep-bodied, laterally compressed fish, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 19.5 in. The body profile is short and distinctly deep — FishBase records 10 dorsal spines with 13–14 soft rays, and 11–12 anal spines with 16–18 soft rays, counts consistent with the genus. The pelvic fins are reduced to a single long filamentous ray on each side, the hallmark of the genus.

The adult colour pattern is what distinguishes this species from the more widely kept O. goramy. Juveniles are cryptically barred, but maturing fish develop a base colour of dark blue-green to almost black. The margins of the dorsal, anal and caudal fins become broadly suffused with red to orange-red — the 'broad stripe' that the epithet commemorates. The intensity of the red borders, and the depth of the dark body tone, increase with age and with the fish's condition. In aquarium-kept adults that have been well maintained, the contrast between the dark body and the flaming fin edges can be spectacular.

Habitat

Osphronemus laticlavius is native to Malaysia and Indonesia, within the Sundaland biogeographic region of insular Southeast Asia. Its range encompasses parts of the large islands of Borneo and possibly Sumatra, where it inhabits slow-moving rivers and other sluggish or stagnant lowland water bodies. As with other giant gouramis, individuals enter seasonally flooded areas during the rainy season, exploiting the temporarily expanded habitat.

The species is an obligate air-breather via the labyrinth organ — a suprabranchial accessory respiratory structure common to all anabantoids — and is well adapted to warm, oxygen-depleted lowland waters where gill breathing alone would be insufficient. Reported water conditions span a broad thermal range of roughly 68–86 °F (68–86 °F), with a pH tolerance of approximately 6.5–8.0 and moderate hardness. The species is therefore less specialised than many smaller gourami relatives that require blackwater acidic conditions; it is a generalist lowland fish of the kind typical of the great Sundaland river systems.

Feeding

Osphronemus laticlavius is omnivorous and, like the other giant gouramis, is primarily herbivorous in habit. In the wild it grazes on aquatic vegetation, algae, fallen fruit, and plant detritus, supplemented by invertebrates and organic material available in the water column and on substrates.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts a wide range of foods: large pellets formulated for cichlids or herbivorous fish, blanched vegetables (courgette, peas, lettuce, spinach), fresh fruit, frozen foods such as shrimp or mussel, and live foods. A diet weighted toward plant matter reflects the fish's natural preferences and helps maintain condition over the long captive life this species can achieve. Overfeeding with high-protein foods should be avoided, as it can lead to fatty degeneration in fish that grow slowly to full size.

Mating

Giant gouramis are bubble-nesters, and O. laticlavius almost certainly follows the same reproductive strategy documented for O. goramy, to which it is closely related. In O. goramy the male constructs a large, floating nest of plant material, mucus, and bubbles at the water surface, incorporating stems, leaves, and other vegetation into a cohesive raft that provides buoyancy and protection for the eggs. The male takes on primary responsibility for nest construction and defence.

Courting behaviour involves the male displaying to the female and guiding her toward the nest site. Spawning has not yet been confirmed in aquaria for O. laticlavius, and detailed observations of wild courtship are similarly absent from the literature. Based on the closely related O. goramy, however, the male is the active partner in nest maintenance and territory defence, and the female's role is largely limited to the spawning act itself.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Osphronemus laticlavius has not yet been reported in the aquarium literature, and accounts in care guides note that the reproductive biology is inferred from the well-documented behaviour of O. goramy rather than direct observation of laticlavius itself. In O. goramy the male builds a substantial plant-matter nest at the surface; eggs are deposited into it and hatch within roughly 24–36 hours at typical tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming after a further 3–5 days. The male guards the nest and fry for an extended period, reportedly up to two to three weeks.

Breeding O. laticlavius in captivity would require a very large aquarium or pond to accommodate two adults of this size, with an ample supply of floating and emergent plant material for nest construction. The species' rarity in the hobby and its size mean that few keepers have attempted to breed it, and detailed aquarium breeding records are not available in the published or hobbyist literature as of this writing.

In the aquarium

Osphronemus laticlavius is a rare fish in the trade — described only in the early 1990s, it has never been produced in the same volume as O. goramy and is not mass-farmed for export. Specimens that do appear are typically wild-caught or sourced from specialist breeders, and the species' eventual size of 19.5 in makes it a commitment that few aquarists can accommodate. It is unsuitable for the typical home aquarium; serious keepers house it in large custom aquaria of 1,0.5 US gal or more, or in outdoor ponds in appropriate climates.

Water conditions should fall within the species' wide tolerance: 68–86 °F (68–86 °F), pH 6.5–8.0, moderate hardness, and good filtration to cope with the waste output of a large fish. Crucially, surface access is non-negotiable — like all labyrinth fishes, O. laticlavius must be able to breathe atmospheric air and will drown if denied access to the surface. Gentle to moderate flow suits it best; heavy turbulence is unnecessary and stressful. The species is reportedly peaceful toward large tankmates such as knifefish, large barbs, catfish, and loricariids, but will consume smaller fish that fit in its mouth. It is noted to recognise regular keepers and can become highly personable — a trait long observed in O. goramy and apparently shared by its congeners. Aggression in captivity is often a consequence of insufficient space rather than an inherent characteristic.

Conservation

Osphronemus laticlavius is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), with the assessment dated 21 January 2019. The EN listing reflects a restricted extent of occurrence combined with ongoing decline in the quality of its freshwater habitat across the Sundaland lowlands, driven primarily by deforestation, agricultural conversion (particularly oil-palm expansion), drainage, and siltation of river systems on Borneo and associated landmasses.

The species' large size, slow maturation, and low reproductive output make it more vulnerable than smaller, faster-maturing fishes to population declines from which recovery is slow. Targeted collection for both the ornamental trade and local food markets adds further pressure. Because it is rarely bred in captivity at commercial scale, most trade specimens are wild-caught, meaning that demand directly translates to extraction from wild populations. Aquarists who source captive-bred individuals — and who report provenance data to relevant authorities — contribute meaningfully to reducing pressure on wild stocks.
