Taxonomy & naming
Sandelia capensis was formally described by Georges Cuvier in 1829, making it one of the earliest-described southern African freshwater fishes. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Sandelia capensis (Cuvier, 1829); the parenthetical authority reflects its transfer from the original genus into Sandelia. The genus Sandelia contains only two species — S. capensis and the smaller S. bainsii, the eastern Cape kurper — both endemic to South Africa and both members of the family Anabantidae.
The genus and family placement of Sandelia has long attracted attention from phylogeneticists. Sandelia is widely regarded as one of the most basal lineages within the anabantoid radiation, with a labyrinth organ far less developed than that of the Asian gouramis and climbing perches it distantly relates to. This primitive suprabranchial morphology supports the hypothesis that the labyrinth organ evolved independently — or at least elaborated independently — in the African and Asian anabantoid lineages.
Recent molecular work has identified at least two deeply divergent genetic lineages within what is currently called Sandelia capensis, suggesting the taxon may harbour cryptic species. This uncertainty is the primary reason the IUCN cannot assign a reliable threat category: until the taxonomy is resolved, range estimates and population assessments remain meaningless at the species level. Hobbyists and researchers should be alert to the possibility that fish from different drainages represent separate biological species.
Morphology
Sandelia capensis is a stout, somewhat cylindrical fish reaching up to 8–8.5 in standard length, making it among the largest of the African anabantoids. The body is robust and moderately compressed, with a large head, a wide terminal mouth suited to capturing vertebrate prey, and moderately scaled flanks. The dorsal and anal fins are long-based and soft-rayed for much of their length, giving the fish a profile reminiscent of a freshwater bass more than a typical gourami.
Base colouration varies by population and condition: the flanks are typically olive-brown to greenish-grey, often with a series of irregular darker bars or blotches along the sides. Breeding males undergo a striking nuptial transformation — dark transverse bars intensify, the lower jaw and ventral regions darken, and the fins deepen in pigmentation. This colour shift is most conspicuous during territory defence and courtship, when males adopt a broad-shouldered, head-down threat posture.
The suprabranchial chamber housing the labyrinth organ is notably smaller relative to body size than in Asian anabantoids of comparable dimensions. Sandelia capensis is considered a facultative air-breather rather than an obligate one — it can supplement gill respiration with atmospheric air gulped at the surface, but is less dependent on this mechanism than, say, the climbing perch Anabas testudineus.
Habitat
Sandelia capensis is endemic to the coastal river systems of the southern Cape, South Africa, ranging from the Coega River (Eastern Cape) westward through the streams of the Cape Flats and north to Verlorenvlei. It is a species of the Cape Floristic Region, one of the world's biodiversity hotspots, and its distribution is tightly linked to the cool, seasonal rivers and associated lowland wetlands that characterise this Mediterranean-climate landscape.
Unlike the stereotypical labyrinth fish of sluggish, oxygen-depleted tropical backwaters, Sandelia capensis shows a preference for rocky, flowing streams and rivers rather than still, heavily vegetated water, though it will also occupy slower reaches and coastal vleis where suitable shelter is available. It shelters among submerged roots, woody debris, overhanging banks, and aquatic plants. Water temperatures in its natural range are cool-to-warm temperate: broadly 64–72 °F (64–72 °F), reflecting the seasonal climate of the Cape. Reported pH is typically 6.5–7.2 in well-studied localities, with moderate hardness.
The Cape Fold Ecoregion streams that the species inhabits are characterised by high catchment variability, seasonal flood-drought cycles, and naturally low conductivity in many headwater reaches. This is not a fish of the humid tropics but of a biologically extraordinary temperate corner of Africa.
Feeding
Sandelia capensis is a generalist carnivore and opportunistic predator. The natural diet encompasses aquatic invertebrates — including insect larvae and freshwater crabs — together with small fish taken whole. Its large mouth and robust build place it firmly in the piscivore-capable tier of Cape river predators, and larger individuals are capable of consuming prey fish of substantial size.
In captivity the species adapts readily to meaty foods: bloodworm, prawn, mussel, earthworms, and whole feeder invertebrates are all accepted. It does not graze on algae or plant material to any meaningful degree and should be fed accordingly. The feeding strike is confident and direct; the species does not require live food to remain healthy in the aquarium, though live invertebrates elicit the strongest natural foraging behaviour.
Mating
Sandelia capensis is a substrate spawner in which the male defends the nest site and guards the eggs — a reproductive strategy characteristic of many African anabantoids and quite different from the bubble-nest building of the Asian gouramis or the mouthbrooding seen in some Ctenopoma relatives. There is no nuptial embrace of the type seen in osphronemid gouramis.
Males develop intensified nuptial colouration during the breeding season, with darkened bars, pigmented lower jaws, and deepened fin colour. A courting male assumes a territory and displays to the female with flared fins and body posturing. When the female is receptive, she deposits adhesive eggs directly onto the substrate — a hard surface or among plant material at the bottom — while the male follows closely, releasing milt to fertilise the eggs in situ. Following spawning, the male becomes highly aggressive toward the female and drives her away from the nest site, assuming sole responsibility for egg guarding.
Breeding
Once the female has been expelled from the spawning site, the male guards the clutch of adhesive eggs, fanning them and defending the immediate territory against intruders. The eggs adhere to the substrate surface and are not suspended in a foam nest or held in a parent's mouth. The degree of male investment and the duration of guarding through to hatching and early fry development is consistent with the substrate-guarding anabantoid pattern.
Breeding Sandelia capensis in captivity is demanding primarily because of the male's extreme aggression post-spawning: the female must have ample space and cover to escape harassment, and the two fish should ideally be separated after spawning to protect the female from injury. A spacious aquarium with dense refugia and visual breaks is essential. Breeding adults should be conditioned on a varied diet of meaty foods. Water conditions matching the natural range — cool (64–72 °F), slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.5–7.2) — are recommended.
In the aquarium
Sandelia capensis is an uncommon but genuinely rewarding aquarium fish for the experienced keeper. It is not a community fish: its size, predatory nature, and territorial aggression make it incompatible with any fish small enough to swallow and problematic with similarly bold or territorial species. It is best kept as a specimen fish, either alone or in a large aquarium with only robust, comparably sized tankmates that it cannot predate.
The aquarium should be spacious, with a secure lid — Sandelia is capable of leaving the water if startled — and furnished with rocky or woody hiding structures that replicate the sheltered stream habitat. Unlike many labyrinth fishes, it does not strictly need very warm water; temperatures in the 64–72 °F range are appropriate and align with its cool Cape environment. Filtration should maintain good water quality without producing excessive flow, though moderate current is tolerated. Surface access for atmospheric air is important even in this facultative air-breather.
Because of the cryptic-species uncertainty, hobbyists maintaining Sandelia capensis should note the collection locality of their fish where possible, both for the conservation value of keeping genetically distinct lineages separate and for the scientific value of documenting which lineage is in culture.
Conservation
Sandelia capensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated December 2017. The Data Deficient listing does not indicate absence of threat — it reflects the impossibility of reliable assessment given the unresolved taxonomy. South African ichthyologists (Chakona, Swartz, Impson) working through SANBI have identified at least two genetically distinct, geographically restricted lineages within the current species concept; until these are formally described, it is unclear how many species are threatened, at what level, or across what area.
The threats are well documented regardless of taxonomic outcome. Invasive alien bass — particularly largemouth and smallmouth bass introduced for recreational angling — are the most acute biological threat, as they prey directly on adult and juvenile Sandelia in habitats the native fish once occupied without such top-down pressure. Habitat destruction through river modification, water abstraction affecting the low-gradient reaches that are the species' optimal habitat, dams, and pollution add further pressure. Climate change threatens the Mediterranean-climate rainfall patterns on which the Cape river systems depend.
Several populations occupy sites within the Cape Floristic Region's protected areas network, providing some buffer. However, many populations fall outside protected areas and are fully exposed to the threat suite above. Conservation actions are limited pending taxonomic resolution, though invasive-fish control programmes and catchment management in the Western Cape directly benefit this species. The priority for conservation science is taxonomic clarification so that individual lineages can be assessed and protected on their own terms.
