The croaking gourami is the largest and most widespread member of the small genus Trichopsis, a group of labyrinth fishes famous for producing audible sounds during courtship and territorial encounters. Distributed from the lower Mekong basin through the Malay Peninsula to Java, Sumatra, and Borneo, Trichopsis vittata inhabits shallow, vegetated, oxygen-poor waters where its ability to breathe air at the surface is as essential as the bubble nest it builds to shelter its eggs. Modest in size and quietly patterned, it is easy to overlook — but the soft croaking that gives it every one of its common names rewards any aquarist who listens.

Taxonomy & naming

Trichopsis vittata was originally described by the French zoologist Georges Cuvier in 1831 as part of the vast collaborative work he undertook with Achille Valenciennes. The parenthetical authority in the valid name records this original description, following Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, which recognises Trichopsis vittata (Cuvier, 1831) as the valid binomial.

The genus Trichopsis belongs to the family Osphronemidae, the largest family of labyrinth fishes (order Anabantiformes). It contains three species — T. vittata, T. pumila, and T. schalleri — all sharing the unusual capacity to produce sounds using a specialised mechanism involving the pectoral fins and pectoral girdle. Trichopsis vittata is the largest of the three and has the broadest distribution, and it has accumulated a string of common names that all acknowledge the same character: croaking gourami, talking gourami, and squeaking gourami are used interchangeably in the trade.

The specific epithet vittata is Latin for 'banded' or 'striped', referring to the horizontal dark stripe or series of spots running along the flank. The genus name Trichopsis combines Greek trich- (hair) and opsis (appearance), perhaps alluding to the elongated rays of the paired fins in displaying males.

Morphology

Trichopsis vittata is a slender, somewhat laterally compressed fish reaching around 3 in total length, making it noticeably larger than its congeners T. pumila and T. schalleri. The body is elongate and the head pointed, with the large eyes set well forward. The paired pelvic fins are modified into long, thread-like feelers — characteristic of the broader gourami clade — that serve a sensory function in navigating dense vegetation.

The colour pattern is subdued but attractive: the background is a pale tan to olive-brown, overlaid by a dark horizontal stripe running from the snout through the eye to the caudal peduncle, with a second, less distinct stripe below. The fins may show iridescent blue or greenish flecks, most vivid in males, and the caudal fin often carries small spots. Males develop more intense coloration and longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins during the breeding season. Like all labyrinth fishes, the species possesses a suprabranchial labyrinth organ above each gill chamber that extracts oxygen directly from atmospheric air — a crucial adaptation to the oxygen-depleted waters it inhabits.

Habitat

Trichopsis vittata occupies the broadest ecological range of any Trichopsis species, occurring across a wide arc of Southeast Asia: the lower Mekong basin in Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand; the lower Salween drainage in Myanmar; the Malay Peninsula including Malaysia and Singapore; and the islands of Sumatra, Borneo, and Java. Feral populations have established in the Philippines, India, and Florida, USA, introduced via the ornamental fish trade.

Within this range the species inhabits shallow, heavily vegetated, sluggish to standing water. It is found in swamp forest, peat swamps, seasonal floodplains, rice paddies, irrigation canals, roadside ditches, and small tributary streams — essentially wherever submerged and emergent vegetation provides cover and the current is slow enough to hold a bubble nest together. These environments are typically warm (72–82 °F), often softly acidic to neutral (pH 5.0–7.5), and seasonally low in dissolved oxygen, conditions that favour a labyrinth fish capable of surfacing to breathe air.

The species' tolerance of disturbed and human-modified habitats — rice paddies, ditches, and canals — sets it apart from the more sensitive blackwater specialists within Osphronemidae and explains its success across a wide and heavily cultivated region.

Feeding

Trichopsis vittata is a carnivore, feeding primarily on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. In the wild the diet includes zooplankton, small crustaceans, and insect larvae gleaned from the water column and from the surface film. Individuals are opportunistic and pick prey from vegetation as well as open water.

In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of meaty foods. Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp), bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and small mosquito larvae are all taken readily, and most individuals adapt to frozen versions of these with little difficulty. High-quality small pellets or micro-granules designed for labyrinth fishes can form a useful staple. A varied diet maintains condition and brings out the best coloration; exclusively dry-food diets are tolerated but generally produce less vibrant fish.

Mating

The courtship of Trichopsis vittata centres on sound. Both sexes can produce audible croaking or chirping by vibrating specialised pectoral-fin tendons against the pectoral girdle — a mechanism unique to this genus within the labyrinth fishes. During territorial encounters and courtship, males croaking at each other can be heard across a quiet room; listening at the tank after lights-out is the surest way to observe the behaviour. Females also produce softer sounds, and acoustic signalling appears to play a role in mate assessment as well as rival deterrence.

Males in breeding condition develop deeper coloration and display to females with spread fins and lateral body presentations, interspersing these visual signals with bouts of croaking. The male also constructs a bubble nest at or near the surface before serious courtship begins, often positioning it beneath a broad leaf or other overhang that provides some structural support and shelter. Once a female is receptive, the pair engages in the typical embrace spawning posture of osphronemid bubble-nesters.

Breeding

Trichopsis vittata is a bubble-nest builder. The male constructs a small raft of mucus-bound air bubbles, typically anchored beneath a broad floating leaf, a piece of cork, or surface vegetation, where it is partially sheltered from disturbance. The nest is smaller than those of many other bubble-nesting gouramis, reflecting the species' preference for sites with natural overhead cover rather than open-surface rafts.

Spawning takes place beneath the nest. The male wraps around the female in a nuptial embrace, and the pair release eggs and sperm simultaneously; the eggs float upward and are caught by the male and blown into the bubble mass. The female is typically driven away after spawning or, in a small tank, may be removed by the aquarist to prevent harassment. The male alone tends the nest, retrieving any sinking eggs and repairing the bubble raft. At 75–82 °F the eggs hatch within 24–48 hours, and the larvae remain in or near the nest for a further two to three days before becoming free-swimming. The male continues guarding the brood through this period. Once the fry are free-swimming the male's parental role ends and he may be removed. First foods for the tiny fry are infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, with newly hatched Artemia nauplii introduced as the fry grow.

In the aquarium

Trichopsis vittata is an undemanding, peaceful fish well suited to smaller community aquariums and species-specific setups alike. A tank of 15–20 US gal with dense planting, floating leaves or cork tiles at the surface for nest sites, and gentle filtration suits a small group or a breeding pair. Because the species is a labyrinth fish, surface access is non-negotiable: the air space between the waterline and the cover glass must be warm and humid, as cold air drawn into the labyrinth organ can cause damage. Avoid strong surface agitation, which breaks up bubble nests and disrupts surface breathing.

Water conditions should be warm and soft to moderately hard: 72–82 °F and pH 5.0–7.5 covers the wild range well, and the species tolerates neutral tap water without difficulty. It is generally peaceful with other fish of similar size, though males may skirmish with each other or with other bubble-nesters sharing the same surface territory. Suitable tankmates include small rasboras, danios, tetras, and peaceful bottom-dwellers such as Corydoras. Avoid boisterous or fin-nipping species that will stress the fish and suppress the croaking displays that make it interesting to keep.

Trichopsis vittata is not demanding about food and is straightforward to breed, making it a good introduction to the labyrinth fishes for aquarists who have not kept gouramis before. The acoustic displays — best observed at dusk or with the tank light dimmed — are a genuine novelty that few other aquarium fishes can match.

Conservation

Trichopsis vittata is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in January 2019. The listing reflects the species' wide distribution across Southeast Asia, its presence in multiple river basins and island groups, and its demonstrated tolerance of degraded, human-modified habitats including rice paddies, irrigation canals, and roadside ditches.

While wetland loss, pollution, and agricultural intensification affect the quality of shallow lowland habitats across its range, the species' broad ecological tolerance means it persists in disturbed landscapes where more specialist labyrinth fishes are declining. The existence of feral populations in the Philippines, parts of India, and Florida attests to its hardiness and adaptability. Trade pressure from ornamental collection is not considered a significant threat at the population level given how readily it breeds and how widespread it remains.
