Aphaniops furcatus is a diminutive, brackish-tolerant killifish endemic to Iran, best known from the Shur drainage — a saline river system draining the interior plateau toward the Persian Gulf. Reaching barely 1.5 in standard length, it belongs to the family Aphaniidae, the Oriental killifishes, a group of small, hardy tooth-carps adapted to the chemically extreme waters of the Old World arid belt: alkaline springs, saline marshes, and turbid wadis from the Iberian Peninsula through North Africa and the Middle East to Central Asia. A non-annual, adhesive-egg spawner that has never received a formal IUCN assessment, Aphaniops furcatus is one of the least-studied members of its genus, known mainly from the type locality and occasionally surfacing in specialist killifish collections.

Aphaniops furcatus was originally described by the Russian naturalist and explorer Nikolai Mikhailovich Nikolskii in 1900, based on material collected from the Shur drainage in Iran; the parenthetical authority notation reflects that the species has since been moved from the genus in which Nikolskii originally placed it. The valid name Aphaniops furcatus (Nikolskii, 1900) is confirmed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), the global authority for nomenclature.

The genus Aphaniops was erected to receive a cluster of small tooth-carps from South Asia and the Middle East previously housed within Aphanius, a broader grouping of killifishes occupying similar hard, saline, or brackish habitats across the Mediterranean and Asian arid belt. The genus name Aphaniops combines Aphanius — itself from the Greek aphanes, meaning inconspicuous or obscure — with the suffix -opsis, from the Greek for appearance, conveying that these fish resemble Aphanius in form. The family Aphaniidae was recognised once it became clear that the traditional Cyprinodontidae was polyphyletic; Aphaniops is placed firmly within Aphaniidae by current authorities.

The specific epithet furcatus is Latin for 'forked' or 'slightly forked', a reference to the shape of the caudal fin — an immediately visible morphological character that distinguishes it at a glance from relatives with a more rounded or truncate tail.

Morphology

Aphaniops furcatus is among the smallest members of its family. FishBase records a maximum of 1.5 in standard length (SL) for males and 1 in SL for females — a size range consistent with specimen data from the Shur drainage, where females of 1 in SL and males of 1 in SL have been noted in the literature. The body is typical of the Aphaniidae: relatively deep, laterally compressed, and robust for its size, with a slightly upturned mouth positioned for surface feeding and a blunt snout.

Colouration in males is brighter and more contrasting than in females, as in virtually all Aphanius-group killies — though detailed published colour descriptions for this species are scarce in the accessible literature. The defining external character is the slightly forked caudal fin (furcatus), which separates it from close relatives. Females are drabber, with muted brownish tones and more cryptic patterning; the disparity in size between the sexes — females reaching a larger SL at maturity — is consistent with the pattern seen across Aphaniidae.

The mouth, eye placement, and scaled body are adapted for life in open, often turbid water. The slightly upturned jaw and dorsal eye position suggest active surface or mid-water foraging, a trait shared by many members of the family that hunt invertebrates at or near the water surface.

Habitat

The species is known from the Shur drainage of Iran — a basin characterised by highly saline, mineral-rich water draining the Iranian interior plateau. 'Shur' (شور) means 'salty' in Persian, and the river system lives up to its name: springs and tributaries contribute dissolved salts that produce water chemistry quite unlike the soft, acidic conditions of the West African forest killies. Aphaniops furcatus inhabits freshwater to lightly brackish environments, tolerating salinities around 0.5 ppt according to records from specialist keepers.

The American Killifish Association's species account gives representative water parameters from the type locality as approximately pH 7, 77 °F, and 8 dGH hardness — neutral, moderately hard water typical of the calcareous geology of the Iranian plateau. This is emphatically hard-water, alkaline-adapted habitat: the opposite end of the killifish spectrum from the peat-stained blackwater pools of annual West African species. The fish is classified as benthopelagic, meaning it occupies water near the substrate as well as open water above it, making use of whatever cover is available in a landscape of shallow, exposed rivers and saline springs.

Such habitats are naturally sparse and often seasonal in flow, which places Aphaniops furcatus and its relatives at inherent risk from changes in hydrology — whether from drought, groundwater extraction, or human-modified drainage.

Feeding

Specific dietary studies on Aphaniops furcatus are not available in the accessible literature; inferences are drawn from the ecology of closely related Aphaniidae. Members of this family are generalist carnivores at the small scale: the upturned mouth and surface orientation suggest foraging on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates at the water surface — small insects, insect larvae, crustaceans, and copepods — supplemented by whatever benthic invertebrates are available in the substrate.

In the aquarium, most Aphanius-group killies accept a wide range of small live and frozen foods: brine shrimp (Artemia) nauplii and adults, daphnia, cyclops, and chironomid larvae (bloodworm) are standard fare. Dry foods are taken by many individuals once accustomed to captivity, though live and frozen items remain the best vehicles for delivering the protein content these active, fast-metabolising fish require. Given their small size — under 1.5 in — prey items must be appropriately sized; large pellets or frozen foods meant for bigger fish will be ignored.

Mating

Aphaniops furcatus is a non-annual killifish. It lives in permanent or near-permanent water bodies — the saline rivers and springs of the Iranian interior — and does not follow the boom-and-bust, diapausing-egg cycle of annual killies from seasonal African or South American pools. Instead, like other Aphaniidae, it is an adhesive-egg spawner: pairs deposit small clutches of eggs on fine-leaved plants, submerged roots, or fibrous spawning mops over an extended period, with spawning occurring repeatedly across weeks or months rather than in a single seasonal burst.

Hobbyist accounts — including discussions in the Facebook killifish community — note that spawning in captivity can occur on the tank bottom as well as on plant or mop surfaces, suggesting some flexibility in substrate preference. Males court females actively in the manner typical of Aphanius-group fish, with lateral displays and pursuit; females select mates and deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs per spawning bout. The non-annual life history means these fish are relatively long-lived compared to annual killies from seasonal habitats — there is no urgency to reproduce before the wet season ends.

Breeding

Breeding follows the plant/mop-spawner pattern standard for the Aphaniidae. Eggs are laid individually or in small clusters and adhere to plant leaves, moss, or spawning mop fibres; they incubate in water without diapause, requiring no peat or dry-storage period. Incubation time is notably long: hobbyist reports suggest an incubation period of approximately four months at typical aquarium temperatures, a figure consistent with the cool, stable spring habitats from which this species originates. Eggs should be inspected regularly and unfertilised or fungused eggs removed to prevent spread.

The British Killifish Association's care guidance for non-annual killies of this type recommends a permanent breeding setup with a thick Java moss or spawning mop, from which eggs are collected periodically and moved to a separate hatching vessel. Water temperature around 75 °F and a stable, neutral to slightly alkaline pH are appropriate for incubation. Fry are small at hatching and require fine live foods — infusoria or commercially produced micro-fry food — before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii. Slight brackish conditions (a modest addition of aquarium or sea salt) may benefit fry health, consistent with the species' natural tolerance of low salinity.

Adults generally do not actively hunt fry but should be separated from eggs and very young fry as a precaution. Small, frequent spawnings over a long season are the norm.

In the aquarium

Aphaniops furcatus is an uncommon species in the hobby, turning up mainly in specialist killifish collections — particularly among keepers with an interest in Aphaniidae and the related Aphanius complex. Its extreme small size (under 1.5 in) makes it suitable for a modest aquarium: a tank of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a small group. Being adapted to hard, alkaline, and occasionally brackish water, it should not be kept in the soft acidic conditions sometimes recommended for unrelated killifish groups; municipal tapwater in many temperate regions is chemically appropriate without adjustment.

A light addition of marine salt or specialist hard-water salts at a salinity of around 0.5 ppt (approximately 1 g/L) replicates the brackish tolerance of the type locality and may reduce susceptibility to bacterial infection. Filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter is preferable to a power filter that creates strong currents — and the tank should be well planted or furnished with floating plants and spawning mops to provide cover and egg-deposition sites. Temperature around 75–77 °F suits the species; extremes above 82 °F should be avoided.

In terms of compatibility, Aphaniops furcatus is best maintained in a species tank or with similarly sized, non-aggressive hard-water fish. Like other Aphanius-group killies, males may spar with one another; keeping a higher ratio of females to males reduces tension. The fish are active mid-water swimmers and show well in a lightly furnished tank with a dark substrate. Their rarity in the trade means sourcing stock generally requires contact with specialist killifish societies such as the American Killifish Association or the British Killifish Association.

Conservation

Aphaniops furcatus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List — it carries the notation Not Evaluated (NE), meaning it has never passed through a formal risk assessment. This absence from the evaluated record is itself informative: it reflects how little attention has been paid to the smaller, more obscure members of the Aphaniidae, a family that contains some of the most endangered freshwater fishes on the planet (most famously the Valencia toothcarp and numerous Aphanius species reduced to single springs or lagoons).

The species' known range is centred on the Shur drainage of Iran — a saline river system in a country where freshwater resources are under sustained pressure from agricultural groundwater extraction, population growth, and climate-driven aridification. Saline spring habitats are particularly vulnerable: they are often geographically tiny, hydrologically isolated, and dependent on groundwater levels that can be drawn down rapidly by irrigation pumping. Introductions of mosquitofish (Gambusia) for mosquito control have devastated populations of small native killies across the Middle East and are a likely threat in the Shur basin as elsewhere.

No specific conservation actions for Aphaniops furcatus are documented in the literature accessible to this review. Given the trajectory of closely related Aphaniidae across the Mediterranean arid belt, a precautionary IUCN assessment would be a valuable first step — and captive colonies maintained by specialist killifish keepers may represent a meaningful insurance population for a fish whose wild status remains entirely unquantified.
