Taxonomy & naming
Atlantirivulus santensis was originally described by Köhler in 1906, making it one of the earliest-named South American rivulines, but it then fell into near-obscurity for more than a century. The species' systematics were substantially clarified by Ywamoto and colleagues in a 2024 paper in Neotropical Ichthyology, which constituted the first formal redescription since the original Köhler account — a gap of 102 years. That study used a combination of COI DNA barcoding and traditional morphological characters to demonstrate that what had been treated as a single widespread coastal species was in fact a complex of at least three distinct taxa. The redescription restricted A. santensis to the central São Paulo coast populations centred on the Baixada Santista and Santos basin (UGRHI-07) and the plateau region near São Paulo city, which represent the type locality and core distribution. Two new species were simultaneously described: A. tupinambas from northern coastal populations and A. peruibensis from southern ones.
The authority is written in parentheses — (Köhler, 1906) — because the species was originally placed in a different genus and has since been transferred to Atlantirivulus. The genus Atlantirivulus accommodates a number of South American rivulines (family Rivulidae sensu lato; order Cyprinodontiformes) distributed along the Atlantic slope of South America. Valid name and authority follow Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong).
The species epithet santensis means 'of Santos' or 'from Santos', the city and coastal municipality in São Paulo State that lends its name to the Baixada Santista, the lowland coastal plain that forms the heart of the species' known range. Vertebral counts for A. santensis fall in the range 34–35, and standard lengths up to 2 in (males) and 2.5 in (females) are recorded from the 2024 redescription material.
Morphology
Atlantirivulus santensis is a slender, fusiform killifish reaching around 2–2.5 in total length; FishBase records a maximum of 2.5 in TL. The body plan is typical of the South American rivuline grade: an elongated, laterally compressed profile with a slightly rounded snout, a dorsal fin set well back toward the caudal peduncle, and a large, rounded caudal fin. Scales are cycloid and relatively large for the body size.
Colouration in adult males is generally subdued compared with many of the neotropical killifishes — the body is olive to brownish with variable iridescent highlights on the flanks, and the fins may show faint patterning. Females are plainer and more uniformly brownish, as is typical for the genus. The 2024 redescription documents morphological variation along the coastal drainage system from Peruíbe to Ubatuba, which is in part what drove the recognition of multiple species; within the redefined A. santensis, variation is more cohesive. Vertebral counts of 34–35 are diagnostic alongside COI barcoding data relative to the newly described sister species.
Habitat
The species is native to the Atlantic Forest coastal drainages of São Paulo State, with the core of its distribution in the Baixada Santista lowland coastal plain and the Santos basin (UGRHI-07), extending into the plateau region near São Paulo city — the central portion of the now three-way-divided coastal complex. Peripheral populations in the same geographic corridor belong to the newly described A. tupinambas (north) and A. peruibensis (south), so the distribution of true A. santensis is narrower than the pre-2024 literature suggested.
Habitat comprises forest pools, stream margins, shallow side-channels, and water channels in both lowland and plateau settings — still to slow-flowing waters, clear to dark-coloured depending on organic load and shade. This is not the blackwater extreme of an Amazonian forest stream, but neither is it a clear-water highland brook; the It Rains Fishes account notes suitable aquarium water at pH 6.5 and hardness 5 dH, pointing to mildly acidic, soft water as the probable modal condition in the field.
FishBase records temperature tolerance of 68–79 °F. As a species of Atlantic Forest drainages at mild subtropical latitudes (the São Paulo coast experiences seasonal temperatures), A. santensis is cooler-adapted than most Amazonian killies, and this has practical implications for aquarium keeping.
Feeding
Like most small rivulines, Atlantirivulus santensis is a micro-predator in the wild, targeting small invertebrates, aquatic insect larvae, and other mesocrustaceans available in the shallow, vegetated margins it inhabits. The species is not documented as a specialised feeder; its morphology — a relatively wide gape for its size, positioned at a moderate upward angle — is consistent with opportunistic surface and mid-water feeding on whatever prey items are in range.
In aquarium conditions the fish is straightforwardly fed on a varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrates: Daphnia, Cyclops, bloodworm, brine shrimp nauplii and adults, and small mosquito larvae all serve well. High-quality small granules or micro-pellets are accepted by established fish. A varied diet with a strong live-food component supports best colour and condition.
Mating
Atlantirivulus santensis is a non-annual killifish: it inhabits permanent or near-permanent waters and does not have the annual lifecycle — soil-burial, embryonic diapause, desiccation — that defines the seasonal annuals of seasonally dry habitats. Instead it is a plant-spawner, following the reproductive mode common to many South American rivulines in permanent forest water bodies.
Spawning occurs over days and weeks rather than in a single mass event. The pair engage in a lateral display and then a spawning embrace in which eggs and sperm are deposited simultaneously onto fine-leaved plants, roots, Java moss, or floating spawning mops. The eggs are adhesive and cling to the spawning substrate. The It Rains Fishes account notes amber eggs of approximately 0.5 in diameter — large relative to the female's body, consistent with the typical rivuline trade-off of fewer, yolk-rich eggs rather than the mass-spawning strategy of annual species.
Multiple males can be housed with females in a sufficiently large tank, and the species is noted as potentially becoming aggressive when pairs that have been separated are reunited — a reminder that rivulines are territorial at the pair level even when communally housed.
Breeding
Breeding Atlantirivulus santensis in the aquarium is described as straightforward, though the fish is not a beginner's killifish — the It Rains Fishes account notes that good cover and careful attention to the fish's jumping ability are essential management points. A tight-fitting lid is obligatory for any rivuline.
Eggs laid on peat moss or floating spawning mops are incubated in water at spawning temperature; there is no diapause or dry-peat incubation period as there would be for annual species. Development time at 75 °F is not precisely recorded in the available sources, but for comparable non-annual rivulines incubation runs approximately 14–21 days. Fry are large relative to most egg-scattering fish, thanks to the yolk-rich eggs, and can accept newly hatched Artemia nauplii and micro-worms from the outset, making rearing considerably simpler than for the smallest annual killies whose fry require infusoria. Regular partial water changes, good filtration, and the prevention of inbreeding depression over successive generations are standard management practices for aquarium strains of any rivuline.
In the aquarium
Atlantirivulus santensis is kept by specialist killifish hobbyists rather than the general aquarium trade. FishBase characterises the species as difficult to maintain, and this likely refers to the somewhat narrow temperature window (68–79 °F) and the sensitivity to water quality that is typical of Atlantic Forest stream species rather than to any particularly demanding behaviour. The species does not do well in warm tropical community tank conditions.
A small, well-planted species tank of 10–15 US gal suits a pair or small group, with floating plants and spawning mops providing both cover and spawning sites. Water should be soft and slightly acidic (pH around 6.5, hardness around 5 dH as per the It Rains Fishes record) and temperatures kept in the 72–75 °F range for breeding, with the species tolerating up to 79 °F. Good filtration and regular water changes are non-negotiable. The jumping ability noted by hobbyists means any gap in the lid — around filter pipes, heater cables, or feeding holes — is an escape route.
Due to the 2024 splitting of what was previously treated as a single species, aquarium strains labelled 'Rivulus santensis' or 'Atlantirivulus santensis' should be reviewed against collection locality data to determine whether they represent true A. santensis from the central São Paulo coast or one of the newly described sister species. Maintaining locality-pure strains and recording collection codes is best practice for any killifish hobbyist working with this group.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List records Atlantirivulus santensis as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018, per FishBase). That assessment predates the 2024 redescription that split the broad 'santensis' into three species; the conservation status of A. santensis in its now-restricted sense — confined to the central São Paulo coastal plain centred on the Baixada Santista — has not been formally reassessed under the new taxonomy. The splitting of a previously Least Concern entity into narrower endemic taxa typically increases conservation concern for each constituent unit, since each has a smaller range and smaller effective population than the aggregate.
The Baixada Santista and the surrounding Atlantic Forest coastal plain are among the most heavily urbanised and industrialised landscapes in Brazil: the Santos metropolitan area, major port infrastructure, coastal development, road and rail corridors, and the expansion of the São Paulo city plateau all impinge on the stream and pool habitats that A. santensis requires. Atlantic Forest freshwater fish face compound pressures from deforestation and riparian clearing, sedimentation, pollution, water abstraction, and the progressive fragmentation of stream networks that makes recolonisation impossible when local populations are extirpated. The species' apparent restriction to still and slow-flowing forest waters — habitats that are among the first casualties of catchment disturbance — adds further vulnerability.
A formal post-2024 reassessment covering each of the three Atlantic Forest rivulines separately, combined with field surveys to establish current population extents for A. santensis sensu stricto, would be the appropriate next step. Hobbyist documentation of collection locality for aquarium strains provides complementary data on which populations remain accessible and genetically distinct.
