Taxonomy & naming
Campellolebias brucei was described by Vaz-Ferreira and Sierra de Soriano in 1974 from material collected two years earlier along road BR-101 between Criciúma and Tubarão in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil — that road junction remains the type locality. The species is placed in the family Cynolebiidae, the South American annual killifishes, within the order Cyprinodontiformes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid combination Campellolebias brucei Vaz-Ferreira & Sierra de Soriano, 1974.
The genus Campellolebias is small and taxonomically distinctive: it belongs to a lineage of South American annuals in which males possess a modified anal fin resembling a gonopodium, enabling internal fertilisation of eggs prior to oviposition — a trait more familiar in livebearers than in egg-laying killies. This characteristic separates Campellolebias from the majority of South American annual genera, in which fertilisation is external and the pair spawn by pressing their vents together into the substrate.
The generic name honours Gilberto Campello, a Brazilian aquarist instrumental in popularising South American annual killies in the hobby, combined with the Greek lebias (a small fish, used in killifish nomenclature). The specific epithet brucei commemorates Dr Bruce Jay Turner, an American ichthyologist who contributed significantly to the study of the molecular systematics and evolution of New World killifishes.
Morphology
Campellolebias brucei is a small, moderately deep-bodied fish. FishBase records a maximum total length of 2 in, though aquarium observations from iTrainsFishes report individuals reaching 3 in — a discrepancy likely reflecting differences between sexes and between standard-length and total-length measurements. Meristic data from captive material give averages of approximately 23–24 dorsal-fin rays and 23 anal-fin rays, a lateral-line scale count near 28–29, a pre-dorsal distance of about 43–44% of standard length, and a body depth around 41% of standard length.
The genus is most readily distinguished from other South American annuals by the male anal fin, which is modified into a gonopodium-like structure used for internal fertilisation. Males are more vividly coloured than females, as is typical in annual killifishes; the aquarium literature describes males as brightly patterned, though published colour descriptions for wild individuals are sparse. Females are plainer, with the rounded body of a gravid annual killi.
Habitat
The species is known from temporary stagnant pools in the Atlantic Forest transitional zone of Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, at latitudes of roughly 26°S to 27°S. These pools form in lowland areas during the wet season and dry out completely each year, leaving no surface water during the dry months. The fish survives this desiccation as buried, diapausing eggs in the sediment.
FishBase places the species in a subtropical climate band with preferred water temperatures of 68–75 °F and records a pH of approximately 6.8 and hardness around 10 dGH — moderately soft, slightly acidic conditions consistent with Atlantic Forest drainages. Aquarium experience suggests the fish is sensitive to water chemistry and benefits from low pH (around 5.0–5.5) and tannin-stained, dark brown water replicating the tannin-rich pools of its native forest environment. The restricted distribution — only two confirmed locations — makes every remaining pool critical to the species' survival.
Feeding
In nature, Campellolebias brucei is carnivorous, as are virtually all annual killifishes. The temporary pools it inhabits are rich in microinvertebrates, aquatic insects, and small crustaceans during the wet season, and the fish exploits these opportunistically. FishBase classifies the diet as carnivorous.
In the aquarium, captive individuals have been maintained on live and frozen invertebrates. Small live foods — Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Moina, bloodworm, and tubifex — are accepted readily and support optimal colouration and conditioning for breeding. The species should not be kept with fish small enough to be prey, and larger tankmates that might intimidate it should likewise be avoided.
Mating
Campellolebias brucei is an annual killifish in which the male uses a modified anal fin to achieve internal fertilisation — a remarkable adaptation within the egg-laying killies. The male manoeuvres alongside the female, and sperm is transferred directly into the female's reproductive tract before the eggs are laid. Fertilised eggs are deposited into soft substrate (mud, peat, or detritus) on the pool floor, where they undergo diapause through the dry season.
Males are strongly territorial and aggressive toward one another; keeping multiple males together without adequate space and visual barriers results in conflict and stress. Breeding aquaria are typically set up as single pairs with subdued lighting, dark water, and a deep layer of peat or fine substrate into which the female can deposit eggs. Hobbyists report that fertile eggs in captivity are uncommon — a reflection of the difficulty of replicating precise triggering conditions — and at least one observation documented a female depositing eggs without a male present, raising the possibility of retained sperm or, in that isolated case, parthenogenetic development.
Breeding
Spawning follows the South American annual killifish pattern: eggs are buried in soft substrate and left to develop through an arrested-development phase (diapause) that carries them through the dry season. In the wild, the pool refills with seasonal rains and the eggs hatch, producing the next generation of fish that must grow, mature, and spawn before the pool dries again — a life cycle often completed in under a year.
In the aquarium, the spawning medium is typically fine peat or coconut coir maintained moist but not waterlogged. After a conditioning and spawning period, the medium is collected, gently pressed to remove excess moisture, sealed in a plastic bag, and stored at a stable temperature (around 75 °F) for eight to twelve weeks. At the end of the incubation period, the medium is re-wetted with aged, soft, slightly acidic water to trigger hatching. Eggs are prone to fungal infection if the medium becomes too wet or too dry during storage, and aquarists working with the species recommend careful monitoring. Because fertile eggs are rare in captivity, successful spawning events represent a significant achievement; the American Killifish Association's journal documents at least 25 published articles on the species, reflecting sustained hobbyist interest and the challenges involved.

Campellolebias brucei is rated as difficult to maintain by FishBase, and the hobbyist literature reinforces this assessment. The species demands careful water chemistry — low pH (5.0–5.5), dark, tannin-stained water, soft conditions, and moderate temperatures (68–75 °F). Standard tapwater adjusted with peat extract or Indian almond leaves is commonly used; reverse-osmosis water reconstituted to low hardness provides a reliable base.
Aquaria should be densely planted or provided with surface cover and shelters to reduce aggression between males and to give females refuge. Because males fight seriously, species tanks with one male and one or two females are the safest arrangement. The American Killifish Association classifies the species as a Class 3 South American Annual, indicating that it is bred regularly in the hobby but requires experienced care. The rarity of fertile eggs and the relatively small size of available captive populations make it a priority species for killifish specialists interested in conservation-motivated breeding.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Campellolebias brucei as Critically Endangered (CR) in May 2022 under criterion B2ab(ii,iii), reflecting its extremely restricted area of occupancy, confinement to only two known locations, and a continuing decline in both the extent and quality of its habitat. The primary driver is land conversion in the Atlantic Forest region of Santa Catarina: the forest-margin pools the species depends on have been drained, filled, or otherwise degraded by agricultural expansion, road construction, and rural development. The Atlantic Forest is one of the world's most threatened biomes, and the fish's narrow endemic range — a small portion of an already fragmented landscape — leaves it with no buffer against further loss.
The species has been known to science for more than fifty years, yet its wild population has never been quantified rigorously and no targeted conservation management was in place as of the 2022 assessment. The American Killifish Association recognises it as one of the most threatened annual killifishes and has documented it extensively in its journal, providing a hobbyist knowledge base that may be critical to ex-situ conservation if wild populations decline further. Maintaining viable captive populations through co-ordinated breeding within the killifish community represents a practical contribution to preserving genetic diversity while the habitat pressures driving its decline remain unresolved.
