Taxonomy & naming
Congopanchax brichardi was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1959, with the authority rendered in parentheses to denote that the species has since been reassigned from its original generic placement. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid combination as Congopanchax brichardi (Poll, 1959). The genus Congopanchax is placed within the family Poeciliidae (or Procatopodidae, depending on the classification followed) among the African lampeye killifishes of the tribe Procatopodini — small, schooling, non-annual cyprinodontoids of sub-Saharan permanent waters.
The specific epithet honours Jean-Pierre Brichard (1921–1990), a Belgian explorer, diver, and fish collector who operated for decades from Bujumbura and made an enormous contribution to the discovery and export of African freshwater fishes, particularly from Lake Tanganyika and the Congo basin. American Killifish Association records document multiple collection localities — including Oyo, Bikoro on Lake Tumba, Boende, Mbandaka, Bwalanga, Liyeke, Mabili, and the Zaire/Congo main channel margins — attesting to a distribution that spans a sizable portion of the central Congo basin's flooded-forest fringe, though individual populations may vary in detail.
Morphology
Congopanchax brichardi is a slender, torpedo-bodied fish of very small maximum size. FishBase records a maximum total length of 1 in, with most adults in the 1 in range — placing it among the smallest members of an already diminutive tribe. The body shape is elongate and laterally compressed in the manner typical of procatopodine lampeyes, with a slightly upturned mouth adapted for feeding at or near the water surface.
The defining feature of the lampeyes as a group is the iridescent, metallic blue-green photophore-like patch above the eye — a reflective region of the iris produced by specialised cells rather than true bioluminescence. In life this mark catches ambient light and produces a jewel-like gleam visible in a shoal moving through shaded water. Ground coloration in Congopanchax brichardi is pale silvery to olive, with the flanks carrying a subtle iridescence. Sexual dimorphism is modest: males tend to be slightly more colourful and slimmer, while females are deeper-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Within the Congo basin Congopanchax brichardi is associated with still and slow-moving permanent waters: swamps, weedy banks of small rivers and forest brooks, and the littoral margins of lakes. FishBase records its occurrence in the Ruki drainage, Lake Tumba, and the Lake Mai Ndombe system — all lying in the central Congo basin's vast network of seasonally inundated forest, black-water swamps, and interconnected lake systems in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Water conditions in these habitats are typically warm and softly acidic. FishBase gives a temperature range of 75–84 °F and a pH band of 5.8–6.5, consistent with the tannin-stained, low-conductivity water characteristic of Congo basin swamps and forest streams. The benthopelagic designation reflects a tendency to occupy the mid-water and near-surface zone within densely vegetated shallow areas, where the fish school among aquatic plants and submerged roots. This is permanent, non-seasonal water; Congopanchax brichardi is a non-annual species with no diapause stage.
Feeding
Congopanchax brichardi is a micropredator in the manner of most lampeyes, taking small invertebrates at and just below the water surface. In the wild the diet consists of tiny insects, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton encountered in the surface and mid-water zone of vegetated swamps and brook margins. The upturned mouth is well adapted to surface feeding.
In captivity the species responds well to small live and frozen foods: Artemia nauplii, micro worms, Daphnia, and very finely milled dried foods are all suitable. Because of its tiny size, food particle dimensions matter: standard flake or pellet foods are often too large and must be crushed, and live or frozen invertebrates of appropriate size — small Daphnia, nauplii — are strongly preferred for long-term condition and reliable spawning.
Mating
Congopanchax brichardi follows the non-annual lampeye reproductive strategy: a continuous, protracted spawning mode in which pairs or groups deposit small numbers of eggs at a time among fine-leaved plants, submerged roots, and spawning mops over an extended period rather than concentrating reproduction into a single seasonal event. There is no diapause; the species inhabits permanent water and has no evolutionary requirement for drought-resistant eggs.
Congopanchax species have also been noted to include substrate or crevice spawning alongside plant-spawning behaviour — Facebook killifish community records describe Congopanchax species as cavity spawners capable of producing offspring regularly when compatible pairs are maintained. The typical lampeye mating sequence involves males displaying to females with spread fins and intensified iridescence before guiding the female to a spawning site, where eggs are deposited individually or in small batches. A school context is natural to the species, and the presence of conspecifics appears to stimulate reproductive activity.
Breeding
In the aquarium, Congopanchax brichardi spawns continuously when conditions are suitable. Eggs are deposited singly or in small numbers among fine plants or spawning mops and are small and adhesive, with incubation typically completing in approximately 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures under the lampeye model; fry become free-swimming a few days after hatching. Because adults may eat eggs or fry, the spawning medium — mop or clump of Java moss — can be removed periodically and incubated separately to maximise yield.
Fry are very small at hatching and require appropriately sized first foods: infusoria, commercial fry-feeding powders, or the smallest Artemia nauplii. Regular small feeds several times daily accelerate growth. Soft, slightly acidic, clean water matching the species' native chemistry (pH 5.8–6.5, temperature 75–81 °F) supports the best hatching rates and fry survival. FishBase notes that the species is very difficult to maintain in the aquarium, so stable water parameters and a stress-free environment are important from the outset.

FishBase flags Congopanchax brichardi as very difficult to maintain — an unusual rating that presumably reflects its specific chemistry preferences, tiny size, sensitivity to water-quality fluctuations, and the practical challenge of providing appropriately scaled food. It is a species for the experienced killifish specialist rather than a beginner. A small, densely planted tank of 10–15 US gal, maintained at 75–84 °F and pH 5.8–6.5 with soft, tannin-stained water (small amounts of dried leaf litter or peat filtration), replicates the Congo swamp-and-brook environment most effectively.
The species should be kept as a school of at least six individuals — ideally more. As a small, non-aggressive lampeye, it is easily bullied by larger tankmates and is unsafe with any fish that could fit the lampeye into its mouth. Suitable companions, if a species tank is not preferred, include other small, peaceful forest-stream fishes of equivalent size and water-chemistry requirements. Collection locality information from the American Killifish Association (Oyo, Bikoro/Lac Tumba, Boende, Mbandaka, and others) suggests that the hobby has had access to multiple geographically distinct populations over the decades, and experienced keepers may wish to maintain records of collection origins to support any future conservation efforts.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List has not evaluated Congopanchax brichardi; it carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is a significant gap for a species restricted to the Congo basin's swamp-and-forest-brook zone — habitats that are under growing pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, artisanal mining run-off, and the drainage of seasonally inundated forest margins in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Lake Tumba and Lake Mai Ndombe systems and the Ruki drainage, which together define the species' known range, lie within one of the world's largest tropical freshwater ecosystems, but that scale does not confer immunity: localised degradation of the vegetated shallows and acidic forest-stream habitats on which small lampeyes depend can produce rapid local extinctions.
The species' apparent rarity in the hobby and infrequent collection records suggest either a naturally patchy distribution or a species that is easily overlooked given its tiny size. A formal IUCN assessment informed by recent field surveys would substantially improve understanding of its actual status. In the meantime, aquarium records from AKA-affiliated keepers — documenting locality codes, collection years, and captive-population health — provide a useful secondary data source for any future assessment effort.
