Fenerbahce devosi is a diminutive dwarf killifish — barely reaching 1 in standard length — endemic to a tight cluster of rainforest streams in the eastern Congo Basin of the Democratic Republic of Congo, centred on the Ubundu area and its tributaries the Ruiki, Amabobi, and Lubilu rivers. Described in 2011 by Sonnenberg, Woeltjes, and van der Zee, it is distinguished from its only congener, F. formosus, by a more robust body, a deeper body depth, an anterior dorsal fin insertion relative to the anal fin, and a striking male livery of yellow-green to blue-green flanks with an anal fin studded with red dots at its base. As a non-annual plant spawner inhabiting permanent rainforest streams, it belongs to the mop-spawning wing of African killifishery — easier to maintain across generations than the peat-spawning annuals — and has historically found a steady audience among specialist hobbyists.

Taxonomy & naming

Fenerbahce devosi was formally described in 2011 by Rainer Sonnenberg, Thijs Woeltjes, and Jouke van der Zee in Zootaxa (volume 2966, pages 1–12), based on material collected from the eastern Congo Basin in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the type locality near Ubundu. The description established the genus Fenerbahce as a separate lineage within the family Nothobranchiidae, the African killifishes, and placed two species in it: F. devosi and F. formosus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) records the authority as Sonnenberg, Woeltjes & van der Zee, 2011, the combination currently accepted as valid.

The genus Fenerbahce is diagnosed by a suite of characters that set it apart from related nothobranchiid genera: dorsal head scales that reflect (rather than simply lie flat), the absence of a tubular neuromast canal system, and a small dorsal fin. Within Fenerbahce, F. devosi is distinguished from F. formosus by a more robust body shape (body depth 21.7–23.2% SL vs. 17.9–21.2% SL in F. formosus), a larger maximum total length (approximately 1.5 in vs. approximately 1 in), the dorsal fin origin situated opposite the eighth to ninth anal fin ray (D/A = 1/8–9), longer caudal fin extensions in males, and a distinctly different male colour pattern — yellow-green to blue-green flanks with a red-spotted anal fin base rather than pale blue with a red stripe.

The species epithet devosi honours Luc De Vos (1957–2003), a Belgian ichthyologist and curator at the National Museums of Kenya in Nairobi, who collected Congo Basin populations including material that contributed to the knowledge of this species. The genus name Fenerbahce has no ichthyological etymology rooted in Latin or Greek; it is a proper name applied by the describers.

Morphology

Fenerbahce devosi is a genuinely tiny fish, reaching a maximum standard length of approximately 1 in (FishBase), which places it among the smallest killifishes in the African fauna. The body is moderately robust for its size — deeper-bodied than F. formosus, with a body depth around 21.7–23.2% of SL — and the overall build is slightly more compact than a typical slender nothobranchiid.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Males are among the more colourful members of the genus: the body is yellow-green to blue-green, giving the flanks a metallic iridescence in good light, while the unpaired fins (dorsal, caudal, anal) are blue-green to greenish. The anal fin carries a distinctive pattern of orange to yellow-greenish colouration with red dots concentrated at the base of the fin. Caudal fin extensions are present and developed in males. Females are, as in virtually all Nothobranchiidae, considerably plainer — brownish to olive with reduced or absent colouration in the fins and no caudal extensions.

The diagnostic structural character of the genus is the presence of reflecting dorsal head scales, a feature detectable under magnification but not conspicuous in live fish. The absence of a tubular neuromast system (the lateral-line canals are reduced relative to closely related genera) and the small dorsal fin are the other key diagnostic characters of Fenerbahce.

Habitat

The known range of Fenerbahce devosi is geographically narrow: all records are from the eastern Congo Basin near Ubundu in the Tshopo Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, principally from the Ruiki, Amabobi, and Lubilu rivers. These drainages form part of the broader Lindi/Tshopo tributary network of the Congo River, set within one of the densest and most botanically diverse sections of the Congo rainforest.

Congo Basin rainforest streams of this type are characteristically soft, tannin-stained, and somewhat acidic, with abundant leaf litter, submerged roots, and overhanging riparian vegetation providing shade, organic input, and structural complexity near the water surface and substrate. The Decru et al. (2017) ichthyofauna survey of the Itimbiri, Aruwimi, and Lindi/Tshopo systems describes headwater streams in this region reaching elevations up to 1,1148 ft, with rocky substrate in upper reaches and organic-rich water throughout; the Arabia Falls represents a significant biogeographic barrier within the broader Tshopo network. F. devosi, as a lowland species centred on Ubundu, inhabits the lower, warmer, and more heavily forested reaches of this system.

As a non-annual species, F. devosi inhabits permanent or near-permanent watercourses — streams that retain water year-round and do not experience the seasonal desiccation that drives annual killifish into egg diapause in buried substrate. The permanent character of these forest streams allows the fish to complete its reproductive cycle directly in water without relying on diapausing eggs.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Fenerbahce devosi exists in the published literature, and direct field observations of feeding behaviour in the wild are sparse. By comparison with other small-bodied nothobranchiids occupying similar permanent rainforest stream habitats in the Congo and Guinean basins, F. devosi is presumed to be a micro-predator, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, zooplankton, and terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the water surface.

In captivity the species accepts small live and frozen foods readily: Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, white worms in small quantities, Daphnia, and finely crushed dry food. Because of its very small adult size (under 1 in SL), food items must be appropriately scaled — only the smallest invertebrate prey or prepared foods will be taken without difficulty. Feeding little and often, with live or frozen foods making up the majority of the diet, maintains colour and condition in males and supports reproductive readiness in females.

Mating

Fenerbahce devosi is a non-annual killifish that spawns by depositing adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, Java moss, or floating spawning mops — the plant/mop-spawning mode characteristic of nothobranchiids inhabiting permanent waters. Unlike the peat-spawning annuals of the genera Nothobranchius or Fundulopanchax ephemeral-pool species, F. devosi does not bury eggs in substrate, and its eggs do not enter diapause. The reproductive cycle is completed entirely in water.

Males court females with lateral displays, fin-spreading, and brief chases, driving receptive females toward clumps of fine-leaved plant material or spawning mops near the water surface or in mid-water. The pair press together briefly and release a small number of eggs — typically one to a few per embrace — which adhere to the plant or mop fibres. Courtship and spawning are repeated over successive days and weeks rather than in a single mass event, yielding a continuous trickle of eggs at various stages of development. This drawn-out, iterative spawning strategy is typical of non-annual killifishes and stands in sharp contrast to the synchronised, explosive spawning of annual species racing against habitat desiccation.

Breeding

Because Fenerbahce devosi is a non-annual mop spawner, aquarium breeding is relatively straightforward compared to the timed substrate-incubation protocols required for annual killifishes. A well-conditioned pair in a small, densely planted tank or one fitted with floating spawning mops will spawn continuously if given adequate live or frozen food and stable, appropriate water conditions. Water should be soft and slightly acidic — reflecting the tannin-stained forest stream origin of the species — with temperatures in the range suitable for Congo Basin lowland killifishes (roughly 72–79 °F).

Eggs adhere to the mop fibres or plant material and can be collected regularly by examining and removing the mop or plant clump. The eggs are incubated in a separate shallow container of slightly moist mop material or in water with a small amount of methylene blue to suppress fungal infection. Incubation in water takes approximately 10–14 days at typical aquarium temperatures (this figure is inferred from related non-annual nothobranchiids; no published incubation period is available for F. devosi specifically). Fry hatch at a small size and require infusoria, paramecia, or commercial fry powder as first foods before graduating to Artemia nauplii. Growth is moderate; the small adult size of the species means fry reach recognisable juvenile form relatively quickly, and sexual maturity is attained within a few months. Because the species is a restricted endemic with limited wild access, maintaining captive populations through regular mop-spawning cycles is the primary means by which the hobby sustains its stock.

In the aquarium

Fenerbahce devosi has historically been regarded as one of the more approachable African killifishes for interested hobbyists, a reputation that reflects the practical advantages of its non-annual life history. As a mop spawner with eggs that incubate directly in water, it removes the peat-incubation and diapausing-egg protocols that intimidate newcomers to African killifishery; the American Killifish Association lists it among the top mop-spawning species recommended for hobbyists seeking to breed non-annual killies.

Because of its very small adult size, it is best kept in a dedicated small species aquarium — a tank of 5.5–10 US gal per pair or small group is adequate — with tight-fitting cover (killifishes are accomplished jumpers), soft subdued lighting, floating plants or spawning mops, and a dark substrate to draw out male colour. Water quality should be maintained with small, frequent water changes; as a forest stream species F. devosi does not tolerate stagnant or heavily polluted conditions despite its modest footprint. Water should be soft, slightly acidic to neutral, and warm (72–79 °F).

The species is peaceful and should not be combined with larger or aggressive tankmates. Within the genus, a well-managed group with a single male and two or three females is productive; multiple males in too small a space will lead to persistent chasing. Because wild-caught material is rarely if ever available — the range is remote and rarely visited by commercial collectors — all aquarium specimens are captive-bred, and maintaining breeding lines is the primary way hobbyists and specialist killi societies preserve access to this species.

Conservation

Fenerbahce devosi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, and carries no IUCN status as of 2026. This absence of assessment is itself a conservation signal: the species occupies a geographically tight range in the eastern Congo Basin near Ubundu, restricted to the Ruiki, Amabobi, and Lubilu river systems, making it a highly localised endemic with all the attendant vulnerability that implies. The GBIF distribution record confirms that all known occurrence data are concentrated in this single region.

The Congo rainforest faces escalating deforestation pressure driven by agricultural expansion, artisanal and industrial logging, charcoal production, and, in some areas, mining activity. The Tshopo Province, which encompasses the Ubundu area, has not been exempt from these pressures. Forest stream fish like F. devosi are particularly sensitive to catchment disturbance: siltation from deforestation degrades the clear, structurally complex streams the species depends on; removal of riparian canopy raises water temperatures and reduces the allochthonous invertebrate input that small stream killifishes rely on for food. Unlike the annual killifishes whose diapausing eggs can survive temporary habitat desiccation, F. devosi's non-annual life history offers no such buffer against permanent habitat loss.

A formal IUCN assessment drawing on field surveys across the Ubundu drainage network is needed to document population size and trend. Given the species' narrow endemism, any such assessment would likely result in a threatened or near-threatened category under IUCN criteria. In the interim, captive populations maintained by specialist killifish societies represent the primary documented presence of the species outside its native range and provide a degree of insurance against wild population decline.
