The broadstripe topminnow is one of North America's most range-restricted topminnows, confined to the Tangipahoa and upper Amite river systems of the Lake Pontchartrain drainage in Louisiana and southern Mississippi. Adults hug the surface near shoreline vegetation in quiet pools and backwaters of small creeks and rivers, where their compressed body and upturned mouth are ideally suited for snatching prey from the water film. The species is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with a declining population and an extent of occurrence under 5,000 square kilometres — a narrow footprint further squeezed by channel alterations, impoundments, and industrial effluents.

Taxonomy & naming

Fundulus euryzonus was described by Royal Dallas Suttkus and Robert C. Cashner in 1981, from specimens collected in the Lake Pontchartrain drainage of Louisiana and Mississippi. The valid name and authority — Suttkus & Cashner, 1981 — are recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), which treats the species as a valid member of the large North American topminnow genus Fundulus within the family Fundulidae.

The genus name Fundulus derives from the Latin fundus, meaning 'bottom', a somewhat ironic etymology for a fish that spends most of its time at the surface; the name was coined in the early history of American ichthyology and has since been applied to a diverse assemblage of North American killifishes regardless of depth preference. The specific epithet euryzonus is formed from the Greek eury- ('broad') and zone ('band' or 'belt'), referring to the conspicuous, wide lateral stripe that distinguishes this species from its congeners — the feature that also gave rise to the English common name broadstripe topminnow.

Fundulus euryzonus is part of a clade of stream-adapted, non-annual Fundulus that inhabit the Gulf and Atlantic coastal plains of the southeastern United States. Its closest ecological neighbours in the same drainage include the more widely distributed orangebelly topminnow (Fundulus notti) and blackspotted topminnow (Fundulus olivaceus); comparative studies of parasite assemblages and co-occurrence patterns have used F. euryzonus as a model for narrow endemism set against the broader distribution of F. olivaceus.

Morphology

The broadstripe topminnow is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum of 3.5 in total length (TL), though the common size is around 2.5 in TL (FishBase). The body plan is typical of surface-oriented Fundulus: a flattened dorsal profile, an upturned mouth positioned at the tip of the snout, and a dorsal fin set far back near the caudal peduncle. The combination of these features allows the fish to feed effectively from just beneath the water surface without turning its body.

The defining character is the broad, dark lateral stripe running along the midline from the snout through the eye and along the full length of the body to the caudal base. This stripe is markedly wider than in related Gulf-drainage topminnows — the feature captured in the specific epithet euryzonus and in the common name. Flanks above the stripe are olive to brown, and the venter is pale. Males and females are similar in patterning, though males in breeding condition may show intensified colour contrasts. The fins are clear to pale yellow.

Habitat

Fundulus euryzonus occupies freshwater creeks and small rivers within the Lake Pontchartrain drainage of Louisiana and southern Mississippi — a geographic footprint estimated by the IUCN at fewer than ten locations and an area of occupancy under 2,000 square kilometres. The species is classified as benthopelagic in its general habitat use, but observations place adults consistently at or near the surface, congregating close to shoreline vegetation in quiet pools and backwaters rather than in fast main-channel current. It favours sites with emergent or overhanging riparian plants that provide structural cover and concentrate invertebrate prey at the surface film.

Water conditions in the Tangipahoa and upper Amite drainages are characterised by warm, relatively low-gradient streams draining the coastal plain. Temperatures are warm to hot through the long Gulf-coast summer and do not approach the cold extremes of upland Appalachian streams. FishBase records the species' thermal range as lying between approximately 31°N and 33°N latitude, consistent with water temperatures reaching the upper 20s °C in summer and dropping to single digits or low teens in winter. About 17 collection sites were mapped in Mississippi by Ross (2001); the species is regarded as uncommon throughout its range, and most records come from smaller tributary streams rather than larger mainstem channels.

Feeding

The broadstripe topminnow is a surface and near-surface predator whose upturned mouth and dorsal positioning of the snout are morphological adaptations for seizing prey from the water film. The trophic level recorded by FishBase is 3.2 (±0.2 se), placing it squarely in the small-predator niche typical of Fundulus: a diet of aquatic and terrestrial insects, small crustaceans, zooplankton, and other invertebrates taken at or just below the surface.

Like most Fundulus, the broadstripe topminnow is opportunistic in its foraging, exploiting whichever invertebrates are locally and seasonally abundant along vegetated shorelines. The proximity to riparian vegetation is likely important both for structural cover and as a source of terrestrial insects falling onto the surface. Detailed gut-content data specific to this species are sparse in the published literature, but the foraging ecology closely parallels that of other small, surface-oriented Gulf-drainage topminnows.

Mating

Fundulus euryzonus is a non-annual killifish that inhabits permanent or near-permanent stream habitats and reproduces as a plant or substrate spawner — it does not bury eggs in peat or soil and does not employ embryonic diapause. This distinguishes it fundamentally from the annual killifishes of Africa and South America, whose eggs survive the dry season in dormancy. Instead, the broadstripe topminnow spawns over an extended season in spring and early summer, with pairs or small groups depositing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, and bottom debris over a period of days or weeks.

Males court females with lateral displays along vegetated shorelines in quiet pools. The courtship behaviour of Fundulus in general involves the male positioning alongside the female and guiding her toward a spawning site, where eggs are released in small batches and fertilised simultaneously. Fundulus are not bubble-nesters or mouthbrooders — the adhesive eggs are deposited and left without parental attention. Detailed spawning observations specific to F. euryzonus are absent from the published literature, but the pattern is consistent with other non-annual, stream-adapted Fundulus of the Gulf coastal plain.

Breeding

Eggs are adhesive and are deposited among aquatic plants, submerged root masses, or fine bottom material; they incubate in the water column without diapause. Incubation time and clutch size have not been formally documented in the primary literature for this species. In other non-annual Fundulus of similar size and habitat, incubation under warm summer conditions typically spans one to two weeks, and individual females deposit small numbers of eggs per spawning bout across an extended reproductive season.

The larvae are comparatively large and well-developed at hatch relative to annual killifish, reflecting the non-diapausing reproductive strategy. The species is described by FishBase as very difficult to maintain in the aquarium, and captive-breeding data are correspondingly sparse. Aquarists interested in attempting to breed non-annual topminnows of this type typically provide dense spawning mops or fine-leaved plant thickets in a cool, well-oxygenated aquarium and collect eggs for separate incubation. The young of non-annual stream Fundulus generally accept small live foods — copepod nauplii, micro-worms — shortly after becoming free-swimming.

In the aquarium

The broadstripe topminnow is noted in the literature as very difficult to maintain in the aquarium — a characterisation that reflects both the specialised requirements of a surface-oriented, small-stream endemic and the challenges of obtaining specimens legally and ethically. The species is not regularly available in the ornamental trade; interest in it comes primarily from specialist North American native-fish hobbyists and researchers.

For those equipped to keep it, a long, shallow aquarium with substantial surface area most closely replicates the quiet, vegetated pool habitat the species occupies in the wild. Water should be kept clean and well-oxygenated, at temperatures appropriate for a Gulf coastal plain stream — comfortably warm in summer (low-to-mid 20s °C) and allowed to cool in winter if the fish are to experience natural seasonal cycles. Dense stands of fine-leaved aquatic plants or floating vegetation along the sides of the tank will be used for cover and spawning. Feeding on small live and frozen invertebrate prey — daphnia, mosquito larvae, artemia, chironomid larvae — is more likely to succeed than reliance on dried foods. Tankmates must be chosen carefully; the species is a surface specialist and will compete poorly with boisterous or mid-water-focused fish.

Conservation

Fundulus euryzonus is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), based on an assessment carried out on 30 January 2012 and published in 2013. The listing is supported by three quantitative triggers: an extent of occurrence estimated at fewer than 5,000 square kilometres, an area of occupancy under 2,000 square kilometres, and a total of no more than ten known locations — the entire global range of the species encompassed within two drainage systems in Louisiana and southern Mississippi. Population trend is recorded as decreasing.

The principal documented threats are hydrological and water-quality impacts to the small stream systems the species depends on: channel alterations for navigation and flood control, impoundments, industrial and military effluents, and other modifications to stream hydrology and riparian structure within the Lake Pontchartrain drainage. NatureServe assigns it a Global Conservation Status Rank of G3 (vulnerable), noting the small range, rarity, and ongoing habitat alteration. Approximately 17 collection sites were documented in Mississippi by Ross (2001); observers have characterised the species as uncommon throughout its limited range and note that its distribution and abundance are likely slowly declining.

The IUCN assessors noted that the 2012 assessment requires updating — current population data and a reassessment of threat severity are needed to determine whether the Vulnerable category remains appropriate or whether conditions have improved or deteriorated. Conservation action for the species depends on maintaining the integrity of small, low-gradient coastal plain streams within the Tangipahoa and upper Amite basins, including limiting channel straightening, preventing impoundment of critical reaches, and controlling point-source pollution that degrades the shoreline vegetation habitats the species requires.
