Taxonomy & naming
Fundulus grandissimus was described by the American ichthyologist Carl Leavitt Hubbs in 1936, with the type locality recorded as Weir Prairie, Texas. Hubbs placed the species directly in the genus Fundulus, so no parentheses surround his name in the authority citation. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the name as valid, and the species has not been subsequently moved to another genus or synonymised.
The genus Fundulus — the topminnows and killifishes of North and Central America — is the largest genus in the family Fundulidae, encompassing species distributed across the Atlantic and Gulf coastal drainages of the United States, the Great Lakes basin, and into Mexico and Cuba. Fundulus is a strictly non-annual genus: all species inhabit permanent or near-permanent waters and deposit adhesive eggs on vegetation rather than relying on diapausing embryos buried in substrate. Within the genus, F. grandissimus belongs to a cluster of robust, large-bodied Gulf-coastal species.
The species has no widely accepted synonyms, and its taxonomic standing has been stable since its description. The name grandissimus is the Latin superlative of grandis, meaning 'very great' or 'largest', an apt epithet for one of the biggest members of the genus.
Morphology
Fundulus grandissimus is a stocky, laterally compressed killifish reaching approximately 6 in standard length — large for a Fundulus, and notably robust in body depth and girth relative to the smaller coastal-plain topminnows. The body plan is typical of the genus: a somewhat dorsally flattened profile, a superior to terminal mouth adapted for surface and mid-water feeding, and a squared-off to slightly rounded caudal fin.
Colouration in Fundulus species of this group is typically olive to greenish-brown dorsally, fading to paler sides with variable amounts of stippling or indistinct banding. Males usually display more contrast than females, and in breeding condition may show intensified body markings. The fins are plain to lightly spotted. Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern common to the genus: males are generally more colourful and somewhat slimmer; females are deeper-bodied when gravid.
Detailed meristic data for F. grandissimus specifically are sparse in the accessible literature, but the species shares the general Fundulus body plan: ctenoid scales of moderate size covering the body, a single dorsal fin set well back toward the caudal peduncle, pectoral fins positioned low on the body, and no adipose fin.
Habitat
Fundulus grandissimus is restricted to the Texas Gulf coastal plain, where it inhabits slow-moving or still waters in coastal drainages — creeks, sloughs, marshes, backwaters, and tidal influenced channels. The type locality, Weir Prairie, Texas, reflects the low-gradient, grass-fringed freshwater and brackish environments typical of the species' range.
Water conditions in these coastal Texan habitats are characterised by moderate temperatures, modest current, and chemistry that ranges from nearly fresh to mildly brackish depending on proximity to the Gulf. Temperature records for analogous Fundulus habitat on the Texas Gulf coast suggest a range of roughly 59–72 °F seasonally, with warmer summer maxima possible in shallow water. pH is typically in the neutral to slightly acid range (approximately 6.5–7.5), with moderate hardness. Many Fundulus species of this region show some tolerance for brackish conditions, and F. grandissimus is expected to share that characteristic given its coastal-plain distribution.
Like other members of the genus, it is a permanent-water inhabitant: it does not rely on ephemeral pools or undergo migration to seasonal pools, and its breeding cycle is tied to aquatic vegetation and submerged structure rather than to dry-season peat substrates.
Feeding
Fundulus species are opportunistic, surface-oriented predators and invertivores. In the wild, they consume a wide range of small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, small molluscs — as well as terrestrial insects that fall to the water surface. Plant material and detritus are also ingested incidentally. The superior mouth position of F. grandissimus is well suited to ambushing prey at or near the water surface.
In the aquarium, the species adapts readily to a varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, Daphnia, mosquito larvae, and brine shrimp — along with good-quality prepared foods. Given its relatively large size for the genus, it can accept larger food items than many killifish and should be fed proportionally. A diet weighted toward meaty foods maintains colour and condition.
Mating
Fundulus grandissimus is a non-annual killifish that spawns in permanent water. Like all Fundulus, it is a plant spawner: pairs or small groups deposit individual adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged plant roots, algal mats, or fibrous substrate (such as synthetic spawning mops in captivity) over an extended period rather than in a single mass-spawning event. There is no bubble nesting, no mouthbrooding, and no buried peat stage.
Courting males in Fundulus species typically display lateral body posturing and fin-spreading toward females and rival males. Spawning takes place when a receptive female is manoeuvred alongside vegetation or mop fibres and eggs are deposited one or a few at a time, fertilised immediately by the attending male. This pattern of sustained low-level spawning over days or weeks is characteristic of temperate non-annual killifishes and contrasts sharply with the synchronised mass-spawning of annual species.
Breeding
Eggs of Fundulus species deposited on vegetation or mop fibres incubate in water at ambient temperature — there is no diapause period and no requirement to dry or store eggs in peat. At temperatures in the 64–72 °F range typical of this species' habitat, incubation takes approximately 10–14 days for most non-annual Fundulus, though species-specific data for F. grandissimus are not well documented in the available hobbyist or scientific literature.
Hatching larvae are relatively well-developed compared with annual killifish fry, and they begin free-swimming and feeding within a few days of hatching. First foods appropriate to fry of this size include Artemia nauplii and similarly sized live or micro-prepared foods. Adults do not provide parental care and will consume eggs and small fry if they remain in the same vessel; eggs or the spawning substrate should be removed regularly. Growth in Fundulus is moderately fast at warmer temperatures, and juveniles develop the species' characteristic robust body shape within a few months.
In the aquarium
Fundulus grandissimus is a large killifish by hobby standards and requires a spacious, well-covered aquarium — a tight-fitting lid is essential, as Fundulus are capable jumpers. A tank of at least 35.5–47 in in length is appropriate for a species that can reach 6 in SL. The species does best in cool to moderate temperatures (59–72 °F), which rules out pairing it with tropical warm-water species; a room-temperature or slightly heated setup without the high temperatures of typical tropical tanks suits it well.
Water chemistry requirements are undemanding within the neutral range: pH 6.5–7.5 and moderate hardness replicate the coastal-plain conditions of its native Texas habitat. A light current, ample surface area, and planting with fine-leaved vegetation (or spawning mops for breeding) complete a functional setup. The species is predatory and will consume smaller tankmates; it is best housed with similar-sized, robust companions or in a species tank.
As a relatively obscure native North American species, F. grandissimus is rarely encountered in the mainstream hobby, but it is of interest to Fundulus specialists and North American native-fish enthusiasts. The Native Fish Conservancy and killifish societies in the United States are the most likely sources for captive-bred stock, as it is unlikely to appear in general commercial trade.
Conservation
Fundulus grandissimus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its conservation status is therefore listed as Not Evaluated (NE). This absence of assessment does not imply security: the species is a restricted coastal-plain endemic known from the Texas Gulf coast, a region subject to significant and ongoing habitat pressure.
The primary threats facing coastal-plain killifishes in this region include drainage and channelisation of natural wetlands, conversion of floodplain habitat to agricultural and urban uses, alteration of freshwater flow regimes, and the encroachment of introduced species — particularly mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis and G. holbrooki), which have been implicated in the decline of native small fishes across the Gulf coastal plain through predation on eggs and fry and competitive displacement. Salinisation and chemical run-off from coastal development represent additional stressors for a fish occupying the narrow brackish-to-freshwater transition zone along the Texas coast.
A formal conservation assessment by the IUCN or the American Fisheries Society Native Fish Committee would be of value in determining whether population trends for this species warrant concern. In the meantime, its restricted endemic range and the documented pressures on Gulf coastal-plain habitats suggest that precautionary attention is warranted.
