Fundulus persimilis is a small, non-annual killifish endemic to the spring-fed streams and headwaters of the Leona River drainage on the Edwards Plateau of Texas. Described by Robert Rush Miller in 1955, it belongs to one of North America's most ecologically diverse killifish genera — a lineage whose members range from Atlantic tidal marshes to desert springs and highland tributaries of Mexico. This species occupies the clear, limestone-buffered, permanently flowing runs characteristic of the Edwards Plateau: cool, oxygen-rich water percolating through karst rock before emerging in spring seeps and fast-moving tributaries. Like all members of the genus, it is a non-annual spawner, laying adhesive eggs on submerged vegetation across an extended breeding season rather than burying diapausing eggs in seasonal substrate. Small, hardy, and peaceable by killifish standards, it remains a specialist interest within North American killifish circles.

Taxonomy & naming

Fundulus persimilis was described by the American ichthyologist Robert Rush Miller in 1955 as part of a comprehensive systematic review of North American cyprinodont fishes of the genus Fundulus. The type locality is the Leona River system, Edwards Plateau, Texas. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records Fundulus persimilis Miller, 1955 as the valid name. The authority is not placed in parentheses because Miller described the species directly in Fundulus, where it has remained ever since.

The genus Fundulus, erected by Lacépède in 1803, is a large and diverse North American assemblage of killifishes spanning the Atlantic seaboard, Gulf coastal plains, Great Plains drainages, and highland tributaries of Mexico. It belongs to the family Fundulidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes. The specific epithet persimilis is Latin, meaning 'very similar' or 'closely resembling' — a common epithet applied when the describer judged the new species to closely resemble a congener, in this case reflecting its morphological similarity to other Gulf-slope Fundulus.

No subspecies or synonyms are currently recognised under this name in the Catalog of Fishes. The species is closely affiliated with the Gulf coastal plain Fundulus assemblage, a group that includes several other spring-associated and headwater killifishes of southern Texas and northeastern Mexico.

Morphology

Fundulus persimilis is a small killifish, reaching approximately 2–2.5 in standard length as adults, with most individuals in the 1.5–2 in range. The body form is typical of the genus: moderately elongate, slightly compressed laterally, with a flattened dorsal profile and an upturned mouth well suited for surface and mid-water feeding. The caudal fin is rounded to sub-truncate.

Colouration follows the pattern common to spring-run Fundulus of the Gulf slope: males display a ground colour of olive-green to yellowish-tan on the flanks, overlaid with a series of narrow vertical bars or irregular dark markings that may be more or less distinct depending on condition and age. The fins are generally clear to faintly yellow. Females are less vividly patterned, typically showing a plainer olive-tan body with more subdued markings and a rounder belly when gravid. Sexual dimorphism is present but moderate: males develop more pronounced colouration and are slightly slimmer through the body than ripe females.

Habitat

Fundulus persimilis is restricted to the Leona River drainage of the Edwards Plateau in Texas — a spring-fed, limestone-buffered system characteristic of the karst aquifer systems of the Hill Country. Its habitat consists of clear, cool, permanent stream runs and spring outflows where the substrate is gravel, cobble, or fine sand and submerged aquatic vegetation is present at the margins and in sheltered bays.

The water chemistry of these spring systems is relatively stable year-round, reflecting the consistent temperature of the underlying limestone aquifer. pH values run neutral to slightly alkaline (approximately 6.8–7.2 based on local spring measurements), temperatures typically between 18 and 75 °F, and hardness is moderate to moderately high due to dissolved carbonates from the karst geology. This stands in marked contrast to the soft, acidic, tannic water associated with many other killifish groups — Fundulus persimilis is a clear, well-oxygenated spring-run fish, not a blackwater species.

Within these streams the species occupies shallow, vegetated marginal zones and tributary headwaters rather than open-channel main currents, consistent with its small size and surface-oriented feeding habits. It shares this habitat with other small cyprinodontiforms and native minnows adapted to the spring-fed conditions of the Edwards Plateau.

Feeding

Fundulus persimilis is a generalist micropredator in the wild, feeding on the invertebrate fauna of its spring-run habitat. The diet includes small aquatic crustaceans such as copepods and water fleas (Cladocera), chironomid midge larvae and pupae, small aquatic insects at the surface film, and other available small invertebrates and zooplankton. The upturned mouth is characteristic of a species that feeds regularly at or near the water surface, picking insects from the film and striking at prey moving in the upper water column.

In the aquarium, Fundulus persimilis accepts a range of small live and frozen foods readily: Daphnia, Moina, Cyclops nauplii, bloodworm (frozen or live), small mosquito larvae, and chopped Tubifex are all suitable. Good-quality small dried foods — micro-pellets and fine flakes — are also taken by established fish. A diet weighted toward live or frozen invertebrate foods maintains best colour and condition and supports natural reproductive behaviour.

Mating

Fundulus persimilis is a non-annual killifish; it does not bury diapausing eggs in substrate and is not adapted to ephemeral seasonal pools. Its breeding strategy is that of a permanent-water plant-spawner: pairs or small groups engage in courtship over submerged vegetation, floating mops, or fine-leaved plants, depositing individual adhesive eggs that attach to plant matter or fibres rather than accumulating in substrate.

Males court females with lateral displays, fin erection, and close parallel swimming. The spawning act is brief — a momentary press alongside the female as one or a few eggs are fertilised and deposited. In permanent-water killifishes this process continues intermittently over days and weeks rather than in a single mass event, allowing egg deposition to be spread across an extended window. Females in good condition produce eggs continuously in a well-maintained aquarium at appropriate temperatures. Spawning activity is typically most pronounced in spring and early summer in the wild, following the mild temperatures of the Edwards Plateau spring outflows.

Breeding

Breeding Fundulus persimilis in captivity follows the standard approach for non-annual Fundulus: provide a well-planted aquarium or a tank equipped with fine-leaved artificial plants or yarn spawning mops, and maintain water temperature in the 64–72 °F range to reflect the cool spring-run conditions of the native habitat. Slightly alkaline, moderately hard water (pH 7.0–7.5) is appropriate.

Eggs are deposited singly and adhere to the plant or mop fibres. They can be left in place if the tank is densely planted and fry have cover, but a safer approach is to check and remove mops every few days, picking eggs by hand into a separate hatching container. Eggs incubate in water at ambient temperature — there is no diapause period and no requirement for dry-storage or chilling. Incubation takes approximately two to three weeks depending on temperature; warmer water accelerates development. Fry are relatively large at hatching compared to annual killifish larvae, and can take Artemia nauplii and micro-worm from the first days of free swimming. Adults do not show strong predation on eggs if well-fed, but fry should be raised separately for best survival. Growth to sexual maturity takes a few months under good conditions.

In the aquarium

Fundulus persimilis is a good choice for the specialist keeper interested in North American killifishes or in the native fauna of the Edwards Plateau spring systems. Its modest size (under 2.5 in), relatively peaceful temperament for a Fundulus, and tolerance of cool temperatures make it manageable for hobbyists able to provide the clear, well-oxygenated, moderately hard water it prefers.

A species tank or a setup shared with similar-sized, similarly tempered North American natives is ideal. The aquarium should be well filtered and well oxygenated — this is not a fish for warm, low-flow tanks — and cover should be provided with fine-leaved plants, floating vegetation, or yarn spawning mops that serve double duty as habitat and spawning medium. Temperature is best kept in the 64–72 °F range; the species does not thrive in the warm conditions typical of a tropical community tank. A tightly fitting lid is advisable, as killifishes are capable jumpers.

Fundulus persimilis is not widely available in the ornamental trade and is principally kept and bred by members of killifish societies, particularly the American Killifish Association, where contact with other keepers is the most reliable route to obtaining stock. It does best with live or frozen invertebrate foods rather than relying solely on dried preparations.

Conservation

Fundulus persimilis has not received a formal IUCN Red List assessment, and its conservation status is recorded as Not Evaluated (NE). This absence of evaluation does not imply security — many small, range-restricted North American killifishes have gone unevaluated despite facing significant habitat pressures, and the lack of a published assessment is itself a conservation concern for a species with a geographically limited distribution.

The Leona River system of the Edwards Plateau is fed by the Edwards Aquifer, one of the most heavily used artesian aquifer systems in the United States. Municipal and agricultural withdrawals from the aquifer have lowered spring flows and periodically reduced or eliminated surface flow in some tributary systems, directly threatening the permanent-water habitats on which a non-annual spring-run killifish like Fundulus persimilis depends. Habitat degradation from agricultural run-off, introduction of non-native species (including mosquitofish Gambusia affinis, which is known to compete with and predate on small native killifishes across the region), and water-quality change in spring-fed systems represent ongoing pressures.

For a species confined to a single drainage system within a geographically restricted spring complex, localised events — drought, aquifer drawdown, or a single pollution episode — have the potential to have disproportionate consequences. A formal range survey and conservation assessment for Fundulus persimilis would be a meaningful step in understanding and protecting this small but ecologically distinctive endemic.
